We have one Berner & she does ok in the heat (as well as any other big, hairy dog anyways!) We have a kid's pool that she can cool off in, a cool mat for her to lay on and she can go under the deck to the cool dirt shaded area when she needs to. We try to keep her inside when its really hot out (as I imagine most dog owners would). At night, she prefers to lay on the cool tiles floors rather than her bed. I met 2 Berners who live in Far North Queensland, and they both seemed to cope with the heat well too.

Product Query - Contech Waterdog
princesszelda replied to Marnifer's topic in General Dog Discussion
We ended up getting a Torus water bowl - the water is stored in the edges of the bowl itself, and only goes into the main part of the bowl when it goes below a certain level (sorry, my explaination sucks...just google it!) -
Hi guys! We've recently tried the Illusion Collar (http://www.cesarsway.com/shop/Illusion-Dog-Collar-Leash-System) on our 1 1/2 year old Bernese Mountain dog & have found that it really helps with pulling. Anyone else have any experience with it?

A Call For Help - Single Dad 5 Kids Injured Dog

Done - might I suggest that if for some reason the money isn't used for this case, you let everyone know what the money will be used for? Just a thought... (edit for sp) -
He is beautiful - love the name too! Have fun with him while you can still pick him up - its been a long time since I've been able to pick up our 14 month old Berner! Yeah, people on here can get intense, but I hope you continue to post and ask questions - everyone here feels very passionitally about dogs

Buying A Puppy On Breeders Terms
princesszelda replied to jpandkt08's topic in General Dog Discussion
We got our female Berner on breeders terms - essentially she will have one litter of pups & if the litter is 4 or more, we will get either a pup or the price of a pup. Breeder pays for all the costs associated with the pregnancy, and will only try to mate her twice - if it doesn't take after that, no more Obviously would be different for a boy though... That being said, we havea great relationship with our breeder & were aware of these terms prior to picking up our pup.... -

Tough Soft* Toys For Heavy Chewers
princesszelda replied to princesszelda's topic in General Dog Discussion
Already been through two of those But thanks for the suggestions! -
Anyone have any suggestions on tough toys (not too hard, she already loves her nylabones!) for a very strong chewer?
-
Thanks for the replies everyone. Pup (yes, still very puppy-like as she is a giant breed and considered a puppy till about 18-24 months) ate something that didn't agree with her so we've been at the vets for the past few days. Will try some ideas as soon as she's feeling better

A warning bark would be fine, but this is a warning "I'm going to eat you if you come anywhere near my door!" knid of bark... I'll try the shhh & see how it goes. It certainly doesn't work when she is just barking to get attention from us....
-
Our huge 13 month old Berner puppy has recently started barking at us when we are watching TV, or in bed reading. Pretty sure it is an attention-seeking thing. Should we just be putting her out of the room when she does this or trying to teach her the “quiet” command (saying quiet, giving a treat). I’m worried that she will just associate the barking with getting a treat rather than the quiet command…. Also, she has taken to barking and jumping up at the door when the doorbell rings. She just wants to see who is there and I don’t think she would hurt them, but it does scare some people. Any suggestions? Keeping a leash on her is impractical as she chews it (no matter what we put on it!) At the moment, we just chuck her in the office (right next to the front door)… Any suggestions would be great!

My mother in law is Bella's heart person - Bella pees anytime she sees her. I swear, she must have given Bella an entire bag of liver treats once to get that kind of reaction...

Well, I don't have four in the kitchen, but here is a pic of my one-year-old, Bella:

Wow - we seem to have the only hyperactive Berner pup out there! (Though, as I type this, our one-year-old is lying quietly beside me...) She has a lovely temperment, just still a bit too bouncy at times and still going through those crazy puppy zoomies

Costco has a great bed that is tough and comfortable, and that fully fits our Berner....Not too expensive either - under $50 by memory

I second the everlasting treatball, however, our 10 month old Bernese loves the ball-thing by itself (i.e., without the treat inside. She gets the treat out within 10 mintues, but can play with the empty ball for hours! -
Bella just had a lump removed on Thursday and was given a collar to wear. I don't know how many bruises I have on my legs from her slamming into them! She got it undone once (running around with it still attached to her collar, so she looked like a flying nun! She was so miserable we ended up taking it off of her on Saturday, and she doesn't seem to be licking at her wound so far...

What Quirky, Cute & Funny Things Does Your Dog Do?
princesszelda replied to Baileys mum's topic in General Dog Discussion
I was standing in the backyard one night trying to get the cat in for the night, but I couldn't see him. I jokingly looked down at Bella, our 9 month old Berner, and said "Where's your brother? Go find your brother!". Sure enough, she ran up in the garden, found the cat and chased him to the back door. Thought it was a coincidence then, but she still does it every time. The cat, however, is not impressed..... -
I And My Dog Can't Sleep At Night :-((((

When we bought our house & found possum poop everywhere, we used Hello Possums Hello Possums. The guy that came out was really friendly, and inspected our house, and told use that the previous owners had done a really good job possum-proofing the house already, so nothing else was needed. Turns out the possum was in the neighbours roof and using one of our trees to travel (hence the poop). Nice to find an honest tradie though... -
Does anyone know where I can get tough rope toys? Bella loves them, but goes through them so quickly!
