  1. How interesting! I've been doing this for a few years now with my own and my clients dogs (grooming) I found especially with clipping nails its so much easier to talk them through it and with very difficult dogs who hate their nails being clipped I will show them the clipper, allow them to smell it, then place the blades around the nail and say 'ready?' and only clip when I feel the relax or compliance. It really truly works!!!! I will say 'ready' for each nail and so many people are amazed that I can clip their dogs nails when even the vet has trouble or they are usually sedated. After a while the dogs self prepare and what was once a very big issue becomes nothing much :) I haven't read Patricia's blog so thanks for putting it up here HonBun.
  2. Thanks Ptolomy... instead of tins I found some plastic toothbrush holders which come apart in the middle so easy to put food in and easy to fade out the food and reward from me. I did look for tins thinking about metal but since Zac is quite happy to pinch my airing metals I'm not overly concerned about that!
  3. Gotta go to work now but will get back to you this avo xena :)
  4. I can just imagine Ptolomy  Jasper goes through his repertoire along with the others and gets a treat no matter what he does  I have to lock the others away if I want to train scent or something specific otherwise I have three all trying to outdo the others! Makes for some quick sits and downs though
  5. Too hot to train much... but....I have an active Kelpie who is driving me and the other dogs nuts!!! Started scent discrimination this morning....by George I think he's got it!!!!!! I used the Denise Fenzi method with plastic toothbrush containers and he was finding my scent without even thinking about it. Very quick and easy way to teach the basics
  6. My BC's coat turned horrible and soft and flyaway after he was sterilized. I strip it and also use Cowboy Magic grooming spray from the horse shop....love it!
  7. Toooooo hot to train Brooklyn gets an A+ in swimming at the beach....Zac...big fat fail
  8. Counter conditioning him is a good idea but before diving in I would give him a fairly long break from that particular crossing. You run the risk of cementing in the behaviour if it goes pearshaped.
  9. Did you ask the judge why she lost the point? There are many elements to the formal retrieve and it would be a very nit picky judge to lose a point on where the dogs eyes are. Having said that, some judges just cant bring themselves to give full points and it can be just because ;)
  10. My Kelpie boy is very similar in his tug play style. Like you Kavik, I want a retrieve of the thrown toy for agility training and whilst Zac loves to play tuggy he is less thrilled about retrieving it for another go. I'm thinking this is a bit of a Kelpie thing as they are not (generally) natural retrievers. He is very foody and it would be dead easy to succumb to his food drive but I want more!!! :D Solution (for me) was to shape a retrieve just like a dumbell but leaving out the formality and the give part....as soon as he brings it back we engage in another game of tuggy. If I want him to give I usually just put my hand on the side of his muzzle and he will give it up or I can do the food exchange. In the shaped retrieve the article doesn't get thrown until the end stage...it starts off pretty much at your feet and is shaped from there. As for enthusiasm I don't know any dog that has a well shaped retrieve who doesn't become extremely enthusiastic for his retrieve article. Just another way of thinking about the problem.
  11. I had one for a couple of days....waste of money! It eats up room in the back as it has to be perpendicular. The dogs could just push through it no matter how tight I made it. A proper bolt in cargo barrier is the only way to go IMO.
  12. ktig....only one clicker? You'll get hooked and then you'll need clickers everywhere...car, kitchen, training bag....
  13. Sue Hogben absolutely Also my training buddies...Caffy and Ptolomy and a couple of others not on this forum. Always ready to provide distraction, encouragement and a good slap when necessary
  14. Goodonya Wazzat. Rally can be a lot of fun
  15. My working bred kelpie is noisy when frustrated...being crated while I work another dog will set him off! This is a constant work in progress as I don't like barking dogs! When he is working sheep though he is silent and calm. My previous kelpie girl (station bred) was a barker and I remember many an agility trial where I wished she would just shut up so she could hear my directions!!!! Since her I'm made myself a promise that I wont have barking on the agility field...that is very specific though and I would think easier to train/control than non specific barking.
  16. Brookie sleeps on my bed which he shares with me and Phoebe the cat, Jasper moves around at night but generally ends up in his bed in my bedroom and Zac is in his crate in the lounge room.
  17. Its official! All squeaky toys are banned for at least six months! Why they feel the need to bring it up to me and squeak really loudly is beyond me....
  18. Dear Santa, All I want for Christmas is an obedient kelpie....Please!!!! Shopping on the kitchen table...turns back to put stuff in the pantry....bloody kelpie got the kilo of sugar all over him and the floor...grrrr. naughty naughty kelpie dog.
  19. Lets look at next year as being the year of UDX quallies Last nights effort was a bust but like Ptolomy I was thrilled with Brookie's attitude. We failed the down in PIM so I elected to do the two exercises I know he can do well which was sendaway with recall and change of position which he did beautifully so I ended with jackpot! Nice when you get the opportunity to do that!
  20. Congratulations to everyone who did so well last night. Mason gained his Novice title, RubyStars 2 girls came first and second in a very competitive Open class, my Brookie won UD and Ptolomy's Scooter came 2nd in UD and her baby boy Strause won and gained his CCD title, and Ozjen's Jasper also gained his CCD title. Sorry if I missed someone out...chime in if I have. A great night for the DOLers
