Wanted A Decent And Reliable Dog Groomer In The Act
bedazzledx2 replied to kbrown's topic in General Dog Discussion
I am a groomer and you really do get what you pay for. I will not clip any double coated dog unless its for a medical reason but there are plenty of groomers who do and you will need to specify exactly what you want done. Also my definition of a regular brush out and yours may be different. I like to have the dog brushed and combed thoroughly, not just a quick go over on top! It also depends on the amount of maintenance you are prepared to put in between grooms and the coat of your dog. Goldie's coats vary from being real easy and light to very thick and a lot of work. When you make your first contact with your groomer ask what the price includes. -
Thanx Teams tonight so a bit more relaxed.

I would be inclined to go back to the beginning and train steady feet. Do it outside the context of a group stay and don't cue it....(you may have yourself a poisoned cue) Work on steady feet in the sit stay first in very small increments and reward in position and break off with your release word. Rinse and repeat. Vary the length of time and distance and when you think he's good with that add proofing. I wouldn't be doing group stays for a while. I'm getting ready to go out (last day of the Western Classic) so will get back to you tomorrow.

Sorry GRLC I sometimes hesitate to offer training advice here as there are so many differing philosophies I guess I need a bit more information first. How old is your dog? Have you been training at club....at what level? Have you actually started training stays or up you fixing things?

Been there, done that!!!! Gotta luv them boys!!!!!

Onya Beans!!!! Great results eapecially for no training....maybe thats the plan!!! Well done to Caffy with Snazzy'z brilliant Masters run to take second place in a field of brilliance. Lovely to watch!!!!

You deserve huge congratulations RubyStar for all the effort and training you've put in to get this result That was a really big ask and a great accomplishment to do that SFE particularly under that judge. Great ringwork too. :D Just a bit more training on those B*****y sit stays :D

Nup....just when it gets too hot!!!! Its too damn hot for me. They said they wouldn't start before 6.45 and if its really hot they will delay it. Unfortunately we all have to be there for vetting and there is no shade down at the obedience arena
-
For anyone not on WAclick, tonights obedience trial has been delayed due to the heat. Numbers can be given out at about 6pm and vetting will be about 6.15ish. If everyone is there and the weather is reasonable, we will start just before 7pm but not before 6.45pm. There will be a break for dinner at 8.45 and all judging will cease till 9.30 when we will recommence again.

Understanding Clicker Training
bedazzledx2 replied to Tilly's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Right on RubyStar Shirley Chong's site is great. Another good one is Sue Ailsby's levels http://www.dragonflyllama.com/%20DOGS/Leve...LevelsBook.html To shape a behaviour using a clicker, you have to click and treat every little step of the process. The dog isn't going to know what behaviour you want from the start so if you don't click/treat to let them know they are making progress, they will give up. Say for example you want your dog to put it's paw or nose on some sort of target on the floor - if your dog looks at the target C/T, repeat until they understand well looking at this thing seems to be what is required... then you up the criteria bit by bit until they are actually doing the behaviour you set out to shape. The process gets your dog to think and offer behaviours as they try to work out what it is you want. I'm probably not explaining it right but I'm sure someone else will be able to explain it better! ETA: http://www.shirleychong.com/ is a great resource for clicker training and shaping behaviours. I used her method to shape the dumbell retrieve and it does work! -
Volhard Puppy Aptitude Tests
bedazzledx2 replied to Longcoat's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Can you expand on that a little please jconion. At what age did you do the first testing and what type of tests did you do? It's been eleven years since I've had a puppy and he was the pick of litter but that was pretty obvious for that litter. With a fairly even litter the choices would be more difficult I think. we picked a puppy using K9 force method which to me seemed logical as we were told the Volhard test has varied ways to interpret the results -
I agree with poodlefan. Sounds like a superstitios behaviour and you may never know what set him off. Drawing attention to it may actually increase and validate his fear. Thats not to say his fear isn't genuine...I'm sure it is, but I would be ignoring it for now and feeding him outside in a place he feels secure.

Agree Caffy! Lovely heelwork and the SFE is coming on nicely.....celebratory drinking planned!!!! Yeah, the secret for BOMBING OUT ;) Actually, I do drink mine AFTER I've been in, perhaps I should try drinking one beforehand ;) I think you'll be having a few after your round on the weekend...I saw some NICE work last night. The SFE was looking good

Absolutely agree!!! My dogs aren't allowed to chase fur, feather or scale! Mind you there was a slight problem the other day when a pigeon landed on the outside steps and the dogs couldn't figure out how to get down without running over the damn bird!!! I had to laugh...maybe I've taught them too well! Reptiles aren't aggressive, they're defensive, they will attack if they feel threatened, but they aren't purposely going to track down a dog to hurt it. My dogs don't like them only because they look a bit too much like snakes for their liking but they normally steer clear of the yard & walk around the rest of the property, I had my dog bail one up once, I gave him a stern telling off & he hasn't done it since (the blue tongue was fine) but he will bark & growl if he sees one. I figure they were here first so we have to respect them as much as we can. If anyone has a problem with them either call a local wildlife organisation or relocate it to a location very close by.
