Try turning side on for a bit so you are changing your body posture. -

Are you facing her? Check your body position...that can tell a dog lots. -
Dog Breaking From Sit Into A Drop

Mine too Its the boring stays that get them. I rarely practice down stays and when I do I make it completely separate from the sit stay. Maybe do the down first followed by a stand and then a sit. Or change position or turn around and do it in a different direction. I practice setting my dog up quick so that I am not mucking about in the ring and can quickly set him up when the judge is ready. Also I always break him from position with my release word and re-set him in the down for the down stays. I have seen many people just pat their dogs and ask them to go down from the sit in preparation for the down stays...thats asking them to anticipate the down. -
They have a squeak like no other! I think its the different sound that gets them....Brookie loves the large one and it has a different sound to the mediums. Mind you if he didn't have a choice he would be just as happy with the mediums!

I was woken up this morning with a green I squeak in my face....that one is now in the drawer . This evening the blue one got carted around and when he wanted a drink it landed in the water bowl for safe keeping and then dripped all over the floor back to his bed! Very entertaining!!!! ;) Welcome to my world Really glad that others are getting as much pleasure from them as my kids do. I still don't know why they are so popular, compared to other balls and squeakies.

I gave Brookie the choice....3 mediums and 1 large....he took the large!!!! He's pretty impressed Thanks for organizing them Ptolomy!

Training And Everyday Life
bedazzledx2 replied to Bubitty's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
No need to start treating your dog any differently :D . My dogs are family pets first and foremost and training is our recreation I don't have a gun dog so can't speak for that type of training but I have friends who are very successful at retrieving trials and they treat their dogs as members of the family. My O C (which can also stand for Occassionally Clever ) shares the couch with me at night and is at my feet as I type. -
I had forgotten about the limit being 100ks with a trailer and sure enough got picked up by the Williams police on the way back from Albany....my speed....104!!!! I reckon they had nothing better to do that day!!! Only got a caution though thankfully.

Another Breed Choice Question..for A Workmate
bedazzledx2 replied to pip1981's topic in General Dog Discussion
All dogs need grooming but small white fluffies will need to see a groomer aprox every 8 weeks at a minimum. Are they prepared for this extra cost throughout the dogs life? Or are they prepared to learn how to do it themselves? Most people say the latter until they try a couple of times and then make an appointment with the groomer Jack Russell's are an easy care dog coat wise but they are an intelligent, busy dog that needs things to do to keep it out of trouble. Japanese Spitz are lovely dogs and surprisingly easy to groom with the double coat if done regularly but they do shed! Just a few thoughts. -
Obedience Instructors Going Too Far!
bedazzledx2 replied to Miss Squish's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Longcoat, back in the 70's it would be a fair bet you could leave your dog outside a pub and no harm would come to it....I don't care to bet on that now days!!!!! Why do you think positive training doesn't make for reliable behaviour? Speaking for myself, my positively trained dogs are very reliable and we have happy compliance to any taught and positively proofed command. Remember positive is not permissive I use stuff that's taught for the trial ring in everyday life all the time and don't see why it shouldn't be reliable. Apart from Koehler's behavioral correction processes which were blatently stupid, I have always thought his leash training methods were not too bad when following his system from the beginning. I have seen the result of many dogs trained in Koehler methods with magical off leash obedience Straight out of Koehlers book Longcoat I remember back in the 70's Jeff, leashing a dog was a statement that said "I am not a good dog trainer". Being able to throw your leash away was an admirable mark of competence in those days before laws made leashing compulsory. It would be interesting to see today going back to the no leash competency perception of yesterday, how modern training methods measure up against the Koehler methods for ultimate off leash reliability???. We can train some super off leash routines, but can we still park our dog outside the pub in the main street of town on a Friday night for a couple of hours without a leash, and the dog still be sitting in the same place when we come out after commanding a stay???. -
Awesome!!!! Congratulations TerraNik  :D

Obedience Instructors Going Too Far!
bedazzledx2 replied to Miss Squish's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
This sort of behaviour from a so called instructor is discraceful ;) I would be reporting each and every occasion to the club president and if nothing were done about the methods I would also be reporting it to the State canine control. It sets training back 20 years and its very bad publicity for dog training. Needless to say I would also be voting with my feet!!! Better to train on your own than have your dog bullied in the name of a sport. -
Any Universal Set Of Hand Signals For Obedience?
bedazzledx2 replied to DalGirl's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
The only ANKC Obedience test you would need this signal would be UDX and you have a choice of signal or verbal command, not both. Most people use a verbal but I have experimented with a right handed signal that goes from my waist in a backward arc to my hip. I think I'll ultimately use a verbal in competition though. -
If anyone wants to join WAclick just PM me and I'll pass on your names to the moderator. If you don't get a reply within a week email me again as things happen and either of us may have forgotten For those not on the list, the details for the Show n Go are Saturday evening 13th March 6.30 start at the Canine lower ground. Agility and Jumping nested courses . Obedience - CCD, Novice, Open, UD, $3 per go in the ring. We still need helpers so please consider coming down and having a go in the ring as well as helping out either by calling or stewarding for a stint. We will also have the dumbell in the bucket competition so brush up on your throwing skills :D This is a fundraiser for the National Agility. I want to join WAClick but still dont know how. Me neither, it's like a secret cult I've asked Deb if she can refer me which she has, just waiting to be accepted. That was like a week ago though, so maybe I'm just not good enough to be apart of this exclusive club?

Trying To Chase Cars
bedazzledx2 replied to Simply Grand's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Ooooh you have a teenage boy!!!!!! You said it in your last sentance.....manage it Don't ever let him practice this behaviour as it will become self rewarding and you will have no end of trouble with an ingrained problem Best to distract him and ask for his attention when you are out walking. I wouldn't allow him unsupervised in a yard where he can see cars going past until he is past this stage. Good luck -
I say lots of other very rude words!!!! They don't work either ;)

Obedience Troubleshooting
bedazzledx2 replied to Ptolomy's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Hi Jess. It can be a tricky one....you don't want to be rude to a well meaning judge but on the other hand you want to reward your dog. I am assuming this is Novice? My suggestion would be to praise her well for the last exercise which every judge will allow you to do before engaging you in a post mortem. If you see it coming then I would cue my dog to down (or sit) and stay and move away a few meters to have a chat with the judge. This means the behaviour is cued and you can then resume your reward routine when you release from the stay. Practice it in training and backchain it so the previous behaviour ... COP, becomes even stronger. Turn it to your advantage -
Any Universal Set Of Hand Signals For Obedience?
bedazzledx2 replied to DalGirl's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Hi DalGirl There is no standard set of hand signals but ideally they should be clear to the dog without being exaggerated (if you intend to trial) I use my left hand just over the dog's head for the stand signal, my left leg stepping off is the heel signal, but you can also use your left hand in a forward gesture at the same time as you step off. Down is given with my right hand in a downward gesture and sit is automatic. For recalls where-ever your hands start (eg at your waist) must return to the same place after you give the signal (for competition) Others may have different signals but these work for me. -
I use 'stay' but I've been known to say 'wait' if I'm next to Ptolomy and I forget He copes just fine and I really think the command is for our benefit but I play safe and give a command anyway
-
Wow! What a great night you had Congratulations!!!!
-
Well done Ness What exercise did she NQ? Nice to finish on a good one!
-
The scouts would dis-own you Caffy!!!! Oh I remember! We just did our first Novice round under the new rules last week...I had it in my head that the recall was the last exercise(as in the old days). I have no current rule book so I got onto YT to watch a round of Novice just prior to going to the trial I would recommend being a little bit more prepared for a trial than that ;)
-
Tiggy!!! Train off lead!!!! YOu don't have to do CCD and Novice is not that much of a step up....you know you can do it In the bad old days there was no CCD and Novice was 2 rounds of heelwork, the first on lead and then off lead. Lots of people here will remember it I'm sure.
