She could end up being called Eternity! Its getting closer though!!! Soggy is lovely....her hubby BF will be fun too I reckon. This puppy has been a L O N G time coming - just glad you weren't holding your breath ;) In the meantime you can keep playing with Soggybear or maybe Soggy's soon to be future husband :p

There's a use for everything Mas I'm using my nephew's I pad...love it!!!! I can only speak for myself, but I find just stepping off on the right leg is a clear enough stay signal for Daisy. I love my down signal, I do it when Mason is in front of the telly and I need to change channels when he is in the way ;)

Think about UD Huski. You will need some sort of signal when you leave your dog in the stand for the distance part at the end of a sometimes lengthy heeling round. Its nice to have the extra of a signal as back up when you leave your dog. I can only speak for myself, but I find just stepping off on the right leg is a clear enough stay signal for Daisy.

This is exactly what I do with Brookie too. We even do hand touches for dinner and brekky! Something to try - ask Mason for a hand touch and reward him with the tug. You then up the number of hand touches before rewarding him. Why do this - because you can take hand touches into an obedience ring and by pairing it with the tug he will expect that at some stage he will be rewarded with his favourite toy. OH and speaking from experience - I ordered this you beaut tug with rabbit fur from clean run. I showed it to Blaize and she went ballistic over it. A few minutes later the phone rang so I took the call outside, came back in 5 minutes later to find the tug in many many pieces! So don't leave it laying around.

Shouldn't be. She (hopefully it'll be a she) will be bred from working sheepdog lines I think I'd fancy doing a bit of 3 sheep stuff Hope it's not scared of sheepies like Brookie

Use whatever floats his boat!!!

Just making sure! Edited for duh English!!! Umm yes it is my heeling leg, I meant my right leg.... doh I was posting from my iPhone and that requires more concentration than normal so that's my excuse

Oh noooooo!!!! Herding will be my next pursuit a bit down the track when I get my kelpie. I have no clue about my right from my left !!! I use back and close as there is no way I can spit out "ooops...other left" in time Confused is right - just don't ever take the red tribe herding ptolomy - you'll have real trouble with sides then ETfix typo
-
Left leg Huski? Isn't that your heeling leg? I agree you don't need a signal...I do a lot of one step stuff. Left leg means dog heels off one step. Right leg means dog stays. Edited for duh English!!!

You're right tiggy From a dogs point of view the down and the stay signal can appear very similar. I had to modify my stay signal with Brookie for this reason and my stay signal is now very high and more casual and my hand is slightly curled with my index finger giving the signal (but its not pointing) and leaving on my right foot. My down signal is done with the full hand palm down.

I think this clip is a really good advertisement for not using a choke collar!!! That dog looks disinterested and is simply being corrected rather than being taught! Yuck!!! How about teaching as a first suggestion rather than correcting please. To the OP, there are many obedience clubs in WA just Google them or go to http://www.dogswest.com/ and follow the links.

What colour is your dumbbell Huski? Dogs can have trouble seeing red and orange so if they lose sight of it as it lands or in long grass it can be hard for them to sight. I always use a white dumbbell. If you are using a white or light coloured one then it may be worth getting her eyes checked just to be sure. Seekback I made my own out of black hose with a wooden dowel glued inside....looks like a metal article only made of black rubber. I lose things so I made up 5 of them and rotate using them so it doesn't matter if I lose one.

 ;) Please don't do that!!!! You can make the one you want smell a little more obvious if you really want to by smearing a bit of food on it but I would only resort to that if everything else failed. The pots and cans method works well.

Lovey TerraNik Just love Kelpies....I'm on the hunt for one now for my next trialling dog.

Sending healing vibes to Lincoln...hope he recovers well.

I entered Brookie before he was ready.... its only a problem if you make it one! You need to have a plan of what you are going to do if it goes pear shaped. My plan for a baby UD dog would be to see how they go and be ready to help out if they struggle. It would be rare for a inexperienced UD dog to nail it first time out. You may find she copes really well with the seek back and something else will go wrong....help her out or leave the ring and be happy...this is the beginning of hopefully a long and successful career in UD OK GUYS! LISTEN UP!!! I need help to be either talked into or out of doing my first UD trial the weekend after next. It's a day time trial (which is when we do most of our training) at our home grounds, she tends to only botch things up at night under lights and I think it's due to not enough practice training in those sitations. Her seek back is the only hang up, if she can find the start peg she should be able to find the seekback. However she has "blonde" moments where she forgets which direction we've come from and searches the wrong way. She will eventually find her way back in the right direction and she has never once NOT found the article, it's just on occasions she's taken a painfully long time to find it. She does everything else quite well and has been doing it pretty consistently under varying distractions over the last few weeks so I'm reasonably confident that she can do it. So what do others think? Do I enter her and see what happens or do I wait until I'm a bit more confident on the seek back? I'm probably 50-50 about it at the moment, although after this mornings seek back I'm more confident. As I'm the trial secretary I can put myself in at the very last minute so I still have a week and a bit to decide but want some opinions! I figure I'll probably stuff the first trial or even few trials cos of nerves which is why I'm soo tempted to do this one.

I was thinking exactly the same thing Katdogs. Way to much information for some unscrupulous people to use in scams and the like.

Yep...Brookie is left pawed. To find out watch which way they retrieve a dumbbell or go out to the box. Yep, they definitely have a dominant side.

Thanks heaps for the info ravenau1 There is a 'Handweavers, Spinners and Dyers' Guild in WA, Contact: Handweavers’, Spinners’ and Dyers’ Guild of Western Australia, Inc. Alexander Park Craft House, Clyde Rd, Menora. Phone: 9370 5004 (with answer machine) Mail: P.O. Box 446, Inglewood, 6932 I looked up the details recently as I have not long learned to spin with a hand drop spindle but I don't think I'm up to Samoyed yet, I've only just moved on to Merino lol.

Thanks Mirawee I've asked a few people before but they look at me like I just grew two heads when I ask about spinning dog hair!!! Good idea to ask the angora society...I hadn't thought of that. If you had posted this yesterday I would have asked the ladies spinning Angora fleece today if they can do dog hair Maybe contact someone like the angora society or alpaca society and see if they could suggest someone

I'm looking for someone in WA who can spin dog hair....I have collected several bags of Samoyed undercoat from the many many many hours of combing!!!!! Years ago I saw a cardigan that someone had knitted from her Sammy's undercoat and it was stunning! Soft and light like a cloud. Any ideas?

Disagree.....My Aussie would have shut down and never got beyond Novice had he been trained with the old methods. I know of several other breeds who would never have coped and are doing a great deal of winning. How about Huski? We also have a terrific little Beagle in WA who has lovely attitude, not to mention the Tollers, Kelpies and Poodles. And back in the "good old days" you wouldn't see the range of breeds we do competing in various dog sports. I wonder how many scent hounds those old school trainers managed to train to competition level? I wouldn't tolerate anyone speaking to me in such a disgusting abusive manner, you'd have to be a real pushover to take that crap No, we didn't see the range of breeds back then, you are correct, but the same breeds still win, nothing changed there -
