  1. We tried but poor old WA is outvoted by the Eastern States so we really don't get a look in I did it with Lara, was doing bits with Blaize, but none of the others are smart enough . I have been waiting for the new rules to come out as I didn't want to train something that was no longer applicable. It was the one class that could have done with a complete overhaul, but unfortunately it is not a lot different.
  2. Practicing it wrong is worse than no practice at all Been there, done that!!! I would be ensuring he is rock solid on the stand before introducing the examination bit. Can he hold a stand while you throw food around him? a ball? a favourite toy? Next, can he hold a stand while someone approaches? No patting yet!!!! Does he know a release cue? Really???? Check that he really understands all the elements before putting it all together.
  3. ....repeat three times....I'm getting a working kelpie puppy.....eventually!!!!!! Nah as much as I would love a puppy, now is just not the time if I don't want to mess it up for the obedience ring! I'm already so unco with my training that I have a lot more to learn before I bring in another. Breaks my little heart but it's for the best I'm trying to talk someone else into one of those pups so I can still get puppy cuddles
  4. We'll remind you of that a bit later :p My puppies aren't naughty
  5. She's gorgeous mirawee!!!! Not sure about how horses names go but how about Mirawee Night Rain ??? Love Amaya....very pretty They still taste yummy that way In fact probably yummier than I can make, I prefer biscuits and muffins as they are easier to cook :p Little foaly shall henceforth be called Amaya It means Night Rain and she brought the rain with her so hopefully she can bring some more ;) Now to think of an official name although I have time for that ;)
  6. Congratulations with the lovely Rory!!! Now onto the real stuff!!!
  7. Mmmmmmm!!! They were yummy brownies too!!!!! If you came last night you could have had brownies! I will bring vanilla slice on Tuesday if there is any left It's a bit messy to eat, though, so it's not really the best "training" food!
  8. She was lovely! Good girl Millie I wonder if you had gone right instead of left would she have stopped as she didn't on the next go round???
  9. Having a few issues with you tube at the moment...will give it another go a bit later!
  10. Fantastic achievement especially for a rare breed
  11. Firstly I think you may be right...the collar is probably a bit big. If you paid for it as part of the course then you are quite within your rights to ask for a smaller size. You should be able to adjust it so the two fabric ends just meet when the chain is taut. It is a martingale collar and if you don't like this particular one you can get another style at a pet supply shop. Nothing wrong with Beagles!!!! Lovely dogs!!!! In fact the Customs and Quarantine use them and I can assure you they are highly trained working dogs!!! It sounds as though you are being taught to run before you can walk.... take it a bit slower and work on the foundation skills of attention and focus while you are stationary before going anywhere. If you have agility classes in your area this can help to teach her skills as well as impulse control. Remember it doesn't matter what you teach your dog (agility, tracking, tricks etc) its all good and learning how to learn is the most valuable lesson for her.
  12. Thanks Caffy and RubyStar Brookie was a really good boy and even coped with my crappy dumbbell throw....find the lost dumbbell!!!! Cider put in a lovely round as did Scoota but the stays took their toll. Lets abolish stays!!!!!! Millie did very well too. Congratulations!!! I thought I'd try the multiple quotes thingy but its late and I've had way too many glasses of pink bubbles to do that!!!!!
  13. Yep and if you do remember to bring all your documents with you.
  14. Me too!!! I've been really good and resisted until now.... Clean Run here I come!!!! We've thought about it :D OMG I swear the Australian dollar is mocking us!!! It's practically screaming at me to do a clean run order
  15. agree and also permission to do the next behaviour in the chain becomes its own reward...ie a nice present on a great recall is permission to do a finish for which I may give a hand touch which is the reward for the great finish.....
  16. I feed raw and I also clicker train with LOTS of food. My boy puts on weight easily (he's a good doer!) so I had to really think about what I use in training. Some nights his entire food allowance for the day will come in training. I use chopped up chicken necks (he swallows whole chicken necks anyway so I chop them up into bite size bits), a whole lamb kidney (jackpot!), whole raw sardines, lamb tongue chopped up, roo meat, chunkers and cheese for my pockets. The more gooey stuff goes into small flat plastic containers with click lids that fit into my pockets. You can get them at Coles and they have blue click lids. I don't cook any of it and on other nights he will get a whole chicken carcass or goat bones. Most nights he does some form of training for dinner however it comes!
  17. Definitely against the rules and could impact on other dogs!!!!!
  18. I had the same experience! The dogs hated it and wouldn't lie on it so I ended up chucking it. Not sure if my guys would cope with the bladder either. I love the Cool Champions Coats and am thinking of buying a mat.
  19. I know lots of performance dogs that have been fed raw for their entire lives and subsequent generations with no problems. I have fed mine raw since they were around 2 and 6 respectively....no problems except my BC had 2 teeth cleanings prior to BARF and he is now 12 with lovely white teeth!!!!
  20. Snap!!! I replied before reading your post Ness!!!! Right on!!!!
  21. What are you achieving? If your dog does the stay perfectly...wonderful...BUT....what if he goes down in the sit stay? or gets up in the down stay? You have just taught your dog that its ok to do it in the ring as the rules of training go out the window! He gets re-enforced for the duration of the stays and you can't do anything about it!!!! Much better to get a small group together and practice away from the ring and be ready to reward for good stays. That's how I do it anyway!
  22. Yep! probably!!! And that is the problem with a lot of dogs. They think I'm not breaking my stay if I lie down, I'm still staying! My next dog I think I will teach maintaining a position, not maintaining a stay. Much like ness is doing with Kenzie, if she says sit, it means sit there until released. Not sure how I'll go with that though, hard to break old habits using stay commands I have done a bit with Ruby already, and she is getting the idea.
