My lot roll their eyes...your not going training...again??!!? I am the only dog nut in my immediate family but my one step sister is also a dog nut in my extended family and her sister is also quite fond of dogs but not as much as the 2 of us are. My brother and mother are not really animal people at all.

Sorry...yes...brain is addled at the moment...everyone wants there dog done for Xmas...tomorrow please!!!!!! I'll get back to you!

We are really lucky in WA in that we can enter NFC (not for competition) so I will most likely use that with my next dog. It give us the chance to see where we're at and what needs working on and the freedom to encourage our dogs without prejudice.

What's that? Oh wait...I've entered Saturday ;) Oh well...I'll bring drinkies!!!!! I will be in touch and will organise some training dates in January, while K9 is closed, for our Monday night mob ;) Might even be able to do a wee little bit of agility

Happy birthday Lars She's a very special girl!

Make sure that when you test it you don't unconsciously try to prevent it from happening ...If you can get someone to video you all the better. To fix it I would be doing tons of start peg stuff. Set up at the peg, mark and treat. Rinse and repeat...two steps, mark and treat, 5 steps mark and treat, 1 step etc etc.... This scenario would be a good place for a NRM...she goes wide, you mark with 'oops' and withdraw your attention....wait until she comes back on before marking and reward. She only does it in the ring and only from the start pole Actually not sure if the ring being up makes a difference. Can test that on Wednesday. Actually I have start poles here! Will see what she is like at home too.

Mental along with physical exercise is quite exhausting so I would be inclined to up the training. -
Woo Hoo!!! Well done Mason2009 Glad you did NFC with food...always keep your eye on the bigger picture!!!

I don't bother charging the clicker any more...that kinda went out a while ago as current thinking is that you may as well pay up for what the dog is doing at the time and work from there. I would be the same with a marker word. To put it into a scenario where I was training the sit for example, I would lure the sit, mark with "YES" and treat.... or if pure shaping and I were to train for attention, I would wait until the dog looks at me and immediately "YES" and treat. Generally I like to use a clicker in the beginning stages of training and say yes at the same time to condition the word incidentally. I then fade the clicker.

If you wanted to teach a dog that, regardless of whether the door is open or not, they are not permitted to jump out of a car or the back of a SUV unless on command...how would you go about it 55chevy? edited for clarity What I found fascinating about the Susan Garrett seminar was exactly how she approached teaching boundaries and consequences for actions without the use of corrections. She teaches self control in the face of distractions and temptations as well as teaching the dogs to bounce back from failure in a training exercise and how to try again to give the correct response without shutting down. She emphasises giving the dog the choice to make the right or the wrong decision and each one has consequences. She has high drive dogs, and Decaf was a challenge in other ways as well. What are the consequences of making a wrong decision in the Susan Garrett system???. SG prefers to start the teaching of consequences and self control outside her main training area of agility. She does this with her program of Crate Games and It's Yer Choice. The dog has the choice of eg in Crate Games to stay sitting when the door is opened and so earn its release and reward and opportunity to work and earn more rewards or to try and barge through the door and get the consequence of the door being shut and so not earn its release and reward and miss the opportunity to work and earn more rewards. She teaches the dog to want to make the right choice and a lot of her training involves the control of resources. They have to earn priveleges from showing that they can make smart correct choices. With a more difficult behavioural problem I believe she would approach the problem as a symptom of a wider problem to do with relationship, understanding and choice rather than the problem being an end in itself to fix. So she would go back to her foundation work program and go from there. I understand the strategy, but I see the strategy as ultimately a means for avoiding an aversive correction as the priority on the assumption that administering an aversive will result in a serious detriment to the dog which IMHO is completely over dramatised. I don't see these strategies in the most part to result in achieving better training and handler control with greater reliability, I see the basis of these strategies being all about training without the use of an aversive as the major promotion from a commercial perspective. -
Have you tried Advantage? (or Advantix if you have ticks in your area) I have found the Frontline spot on to become ineffective and have had lots of people verify this with their own pets. Changing to another spot on seems to fix the problem. One thing to be very aware of is to know your dogs (and cats) weight and go by that rather than the small medium and large breeds listed on the pack. Sorry just re-read and saw you mentioned ticks! I prefer monthly heartworm rather than potentially overloading with a do all product.

Do you mean the collar kind or the internet kind? Corvus

Congratulations!!!! :) LOL Did you have a tipple before you went in the ring??? Probably a bit early for that eh!!!!

Just a note about e corrections. I seem to conduct static electricity all the time and I can't touch the car door and supermarket shelves without getting zapped!!! I HATE it and it pisses me off!!! I would work very hard to give the dog alternative choices No, it's not a slag off on positive training techniques, it's a slag off if you like upon trainers who use positive methods to the detriment of the dog for the pride of saying "I don't use aversion ever" as some do. Their training career is purely method based being their eternal lynchpin, the be all and end all of greatness supreme having never have corrected a dog, used a choker, prong or Ecollar. They are more interested in never having used a correction or a tool of aversion than how many dogs they have successfully trained. The one's they can't train if they are not already at the bridge, will be someone elses fault, or the dog was so screwed up in the head, PTS was the best option. If the idea is to train dogs and be good at training dogs, you do what it takes to train the dog and use what ever methods are available to get the job successfully done, that IMHO is what good trainer is all about :D

So do you see that many pet dogs with such issues these days? I spent 22 years in the job, 10 years as a handler, 12 years full time training tactical service dogs with a sideline in rehabilititation of pet dogs, mainly working breeds with aggression issues. -

So 55chevy, whats your involvement?...are you a behaviourist? or a trialler? or is your interest in training Schtz or are you in the protection business? You seam to have a great deal to say about correction so I'm interested in why you are involved in so many dogs that are in need of correction training. I think it's fair, how many people have been duped by these trainers with a toolbox full of clickers, treats and haltis trying to apply these methods on every dog to uphold their methodolist theories. We have had stories from SkyeGSD, the lady with the Husky named Zero, Donegal and a few more I have read here, reactive dogs being kicked out of training classes and the horror stories go on all because their methods are not adaptable to every type of dog behaviour. Bit like a mechanic saying they can do any job on a any car with a screwdriver and shifter -
