How Do You Train A Kelpie Its Boundries?
bedazzledx2 replied to esther123's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Another vote for a run! My first response when I saw the thread title was to 'fence it in' ...glad to see common sense prevails here!!!! My first kelpie was born on a station spanning a million acres....there is no way any farmer would allow his dogs to roam that area!!! The dogs had a home paddock with runs to keep them safe. -
Now with UDX in mind I would be teaching her to scent and scent match.

Always take notice of the birds!!! Just yesterday the magpies were going off so I went outside to check just in time to see a racehorse goanna climbing a tree! A few years ago the same ruckus from the birds and it was a very large dugite. Not anymore, hence the resembalance of a golf green that our backyard now has! The brown bugger was under a hollowed out sleeper that was used as edging for a garden bed near the back door. We removed everything in the backyard with only the mature trees remaining. We're going to try the sump oil around the boundary fences. Not sure if I'm being paranoid or not but a few times our guniea fowl have looked in the direction of the neighbouring paddock, ran up to the fence and scream their heads off so maybe they could have seen a snake?

there's wet stuff falling from the sky...still friggin hot though! The rain hit as I was walking from the train to the office ;) I only got a little bit wet. Good thing I had the sense to put my hair up today, I hate having my hair down when it rains! As for the heat last night, the dogs were sprawled out on the tiles in the laundry all night, they didn't want their beds

Travelling On Spirit Of Tasmania With Dogs.

10 days is not enough!!!! lol We did a driving holiday and started in Hobart and travelled the east coast and ended up at Three Sisters Beach after a lot of meandering along the way. Would have loved to see Straun and Cradle Mountain but time was against us. Sooo much to see! where abouts are you planning on staying in tas? most of the caravan parks are pet friendly, but many will not allow pets inside cabins (they are allowed to be outside the cabins though) are you bringing a camper or tent? if so, you can of course have them almost anywhere on your site with you. You can camp in any state forest reserve with dogs on lead. The facilities of these reserves are limited in comparison to the caravan parks though. If you are happy to share your destinations i can let you know what caravan parks are going to be the most pet friendly (we have a camper and travel around the state a fair bit, so know of many places to stay) We will be coming over in our motorhome, hubby is wanting to go to the Carrick Agfest and I of course am wanting to go to CADBURY :D in claremont but these are the only 2 definate destinations, we are hoping to be there for roughly 10 days and we just want to see as much of tassie as possible. So any suggestions will be a big help. :D Thanks -

We found lots of B&B's in Tassie that were dog friendly. Caravan parks not so much...only if you have your own van. You can't take dogs into the national parks. Google dog friendly accommodation in Tasmania and you should come up with lots. Enjoy...Tassie's a wonderful place! -
Yes that was the first time the dad had been in with the pups....I thought he was lovely with them. Both parents have lovely temperaments and the pups are very outgoing. Definitely working lines from the wheat belt with pedigrees as long as your arm .
-
The red girl is lovely....the breeder is keeping her so she's not available. All the others are black and tan. Definately not Bundy Was looking at Jack/Jackson but thats too close to Jasper. No B names either cause of Brooklyn. sigh

Regarding doorways....our front door is usually closed, and as part of the toilet training regime I always ask 'do you want to go out?' and open the door for them. Its been really hot and horrible here for the last few days but last night there was a lovely easterly blowing so I propped open the front door to help cool the house. Both dogs stayed in the vicinity of the doorway but made no move to go through...I didn't care if they did as its all fenced so I never commanded anything. What was really interesting is a bit later Jasper wanted to go out so he gave his normal little bark to ask! I was most impressed! I have never used anything other than management and praise.

Poor little bugga will be called noname...or dunno!!!! I'm trolling the internet for names but everytime I think of something I like, its already taken or sounds similar. Any and all suggestions welcome! They are all pretty even so a bit hard to tell on the video. They are 6 weeks old so will get him in a couple of weeks. Awww are you getting excited?! When does pup come home and what's his name going to be?

One of these!!! Choice between two boys. http://www.youtube.com/user/bedazzledx2?feature=mhum

Tosh!!!! That's one way to achieve it Fuzzy82 I agree You can reinforce all the good stuff, spare the dog learning consequence to misbehaviour then smartly manage the unreliability, but essentially that doesn't build a very obedient dog IMHO

Happy New Year everyone Congrats to Mirrawee and the very handsome Banjo

I haven't trained since before Xmas! I figure we all need a break. I would strongly advise anyone to teach the kickback stand. I never did with Brookie as he was a show dog first and had a pretty good stand on him so I wasn't about to break it. Problem is now there is UDX change of positions and he wants to take a step forward from the sit to the stand. Last thing I want is him moving forward on positions!!! Fortunately I taught him a fold back down so it kinda cancels it out. Teach it in close from either in front or side by luring it with food from his nose down to his chest...he should move backwards to get it and you can click and treat and build from there.

Were they the Jenna / Brookie babies? They were extra cute (no bias of course ) Abbey puppies should arrive in August If you get one of hers I won't be astempted to get one Probabaly befor then as she will be in heat in April, same as Jen. What's wrong with a Jenna baby?????? Thats if I can keep the money in the bank long enough to send her away for breeding and I can be parted from her for it to happen. Mmmmm, might never happen but I so want a Jenna baby before she is too old. I would love a Jenna baby, the pups she had before were so cute, saw all their pics on facebook!

Happy Birthday for yesterday!!! Oh well..I always was late! Hope you had a great day

Mine too!!! I'd get more if I had a bigger freezer!!!! I was going to try Black Hawk, but while Nutro is on sale I might buy a couple of bags. Though I can't seem to find anything that will reduce Ruby's poos!! (lovely topic, eh?) I need to retrieve my chest freezer from mum and dad's so I can start more raw feeding again. Millie did good on Nutro, but doesn't do good on raw. I think I'll be doing a combo effort... difficult dogs!! Edit: 10kg here would be gone in no time If I were you I would give Millie kibble and meat and Ruby can get bones and meat Got the most awesome bag of roo bones from A & D and they had goat meat today so now my freezer is busting at the seams, enough meat and bones in there for Mason for around nearly 2 months I think

Hey Sandi...I never thought Moo was dumb, not any Toller actually!!! Brookie?...well thats another story!!!!! Scoota was outstanding on Friday night! With not a lot of training he has picked up every exercise and will lift the bar for UDX I'm sure!!! Well done mate

Congratulations Rubystar! :D What a great way to end the trialling year ;) ;)

Onya Kyzer!!! Well done tonight amypie  She won't be home yet, she was going via her parents' house Good work Xena98! Sounds like another great night Speaking of things a long time coming Kyzer finally got his elusive third leg of novice agility in a scrappy run, he was hanging by a thread the whole time I think We got our first pass in March and the second one in June and have been trying and failing ever since, who knew agility could prompt so much soul searching!!! I had been making an effort to get back to keeping it fun and short and it has paid off in the last few trials for his agility, JDX he had a bit too much fun though and was overcome with madness and zoomed right out of the ring :D

No tags for agility, ok for obedience but I personally don't like tags that jingle and distract. My guys have trialling only collars...special!!! :D I consider spending around $100 for a collar and lead set for the dogs expensive! From the site Ptolomy posted, it would cost $140 and not even including postage, for 2 collar/lead sets, crazy!!!! Why do you think the poor sods have had the same set for goodness knows how long :D (That and I am a fussy bugger when it comes to getting things to match!) My dogs aren't princesses, they only think they are, so no crystal collars for them From the website you posted though it is only around $100 for both sets then I can't imagine postage would be that huge... maybe another $25 since they aren't bulky items. That can be the dogs' Christmas present $100 for a bit of fabric that go around their necks on the rare occasion is expensive to me. I mustn't be making the big bucks like you folk it seems :D Edit: I can't be the only one who thinks the prices of collars and leads are a bit excessive? :p
