  1. Yesterday Zac (14 week old puppy) counter surfed my airing scent articles...selected a metal and carried it up two flights of stairs and took it to his bed!!! No mouthing at all
  2. She's very pretty mirawee I bought her for a good cause No really, I did ;) There was an auction run by the Arabian Horse Society to raise funds for the Qld Flood victims. Mainly stallion services and gear but a few people had donated horses as well to auction off. I had been looking for a purebred arabian filly for a while but was looking for a yearling and preferably a bay... Fast forward and this little girl was donated to the auction by a breeder in WA. She is a 2yo Straight Egyption filly - and grey. But 2 days before the auction ended noone had bid on her. And, well, it was for a good cause Her breeder drove 3 hours to drop her off for me - and then had to drive another 3 hours home! And all they got in return was a cup of tea and some Anzac biscuits!
  3. Didn't I tell you...Bunnings is addictive!!! My name is bedazzled and I am addicted to Bunnings....... Did you buy the reusable wipes..10 cloths for $4 something? I got 4 sets....bargain!!!! oh plus a couple of mops to clean up after puppy!!!
  4. How old is Hugo now? Nothing is safe here!!!!
  5. I have a toy box full of dog toys but the one that my 14 week old loves the best is an empty 1.5 lt plastic water bottle crushed and salted with a handfull of dog bickies Leave the lid off and its like a rattle which releases a few bickies the more it is played with. Cost nothing!!!
  6. Careful what you wish for ....there goes all your money!!!! :D
  7. I am currently researching pet insurance. So far I have Medicare Private (discount for existing members) Bow Wow Meow Pet Insurance and Pet Insurance Australia. Any comments from anyone who uses any of these? Silver cover seems to be consistant at around $29 per month.
  8. Thanks koalathebear I'll give it a go later on. He's currently driving everyone nuts...so much energy!!! Love him though You don't have to upload photos here at DOL, you can link to them at photobucket and then they get embedded here like above. Your pup is sooo cute ... Just look at that little face. Also, please join us in the Kelpie chat thread. It is far too quiet!
  9. At 9 weeks their teeth are like needles! Fortunately though they don't have much power in their jaws and your job is to teach him bite inhibition by the time those needles fall out and he gets his adult teeth. Timing is crucial. I have a 14 week old mouthy kelpie...very mouthy!!! He does however, have fantastic bite inhibition and has not put a hole in me! He is learning that human skin is soooo sensative. I actually play with his mouth, allow him to bite....put up with the soft ones. Think about it... has he really bitten you? The sensation of puppy biting is not so pleasant but you have to toughen up for a short while. During this play he will either by mistake or deliberately bite harder...THAT is the one to mark! YEOW!!! Dramatically withdraw your hand and stop play for a few seconds. Go back to playing but tone it down a bit if you can...if it gets out of hand then repeat. An important point here...you are not stirring the puppy up...you are just gently allowing him to play with your hand. This is a teaching game. It does work and by the time your puppy has his adult teeth he will learn that people are not chew toys! Good luck!!!
  10. Not having any luck uploading photos at the moment. Have a look in the kelpie thread here http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?show...5&start=105 I will have some ripper photos coming soon...a very talented friend took some as part of a fundraiser for the Qld floods I don't mean to hijack the thread but may we see photos of your Kelpie puppy - on another thread of course :D ? I adore Kelpies and we don't see enough photos on DOL
  11. My 14 week old boy is Binnaburra Isaac.... he has Philscreek Sam and Avenpart Zondo in his background along with some Milburn and Capree. Uploading photos is not working at the moment....here is a link http://s550.photobucket.com/albums/ii424/b...nt=DSC00330.jpg
  12. Do you plan on doing any dog sports with her? Agility or Obedience? If so don't worry about the lead grabbing at all! You don't want to reduce drive at this age and when you learn to harness the drive you won't be using a lead anyway. My 14 week old kelpie is occasionally grabbing the lead still but it is naturally reducing and I don't mind anyway. Later on I will encourage him to tug on a purpose made fluffy agility lead. Yes Sandra777, that's exactly what I don't want to do.I don't want Stella to sour of the whole lead thing. I have moved the very short lessons into the lounge room where there is less distractions & are pleased to report Miss Stella went extremely well today & didn't grab the lead once So we will remain indoors for a while cause I think she is starting to listen to me a lot more & it is easier for her to focus.
  13. No training the day of the trial...hopefully all your training is in place and he knows what to do! I feed breakfast as per normal but if its a night trial he will get his dinner by way of jackpots after the ring work.
  14. Its the nature/ nurture debate... I would be very interested in how the rest of the litter are around food. I've seen whole litters who are lovely in every other way but get them near food and its on! In a pup this young I suspect its genetic and with good guidance from an experienced behaviourist you can learn how to deal with it. Definately get help now!
  15. Tucker Time make a weight control log. Cut it up a bit smaller and you can also use fat reduced cheese in small amounts.
  16. It was blowing a gale by the time I got into the ring in Open. Because I am such a crappy throw, I asked to throw my dumbbell in the opposite direction...into the wind. The judge was surprised more people didn't want to do this!! I guess many wouldn't think to ask especially if you're new to Open. Mind you it travelled a fair way and landed just next to the start post..good boy for getting it from there. We came soooo close to gaining a UDX pass last night! Mum's crappy turn meant he didn't get the last leather in multiple retrieve but gee he was good!!! Your girls had a nice work out in the ring with no pressure RS  Looking good for the Classic
  17. Yep...had a look on video and it wasn't the best turn. I rushed it too so that'll learn me! Shoot the handler! HMm I think it was the handlers turn that was his downfall and yep you should be mighty pleased
  18. I have a brag for tonight. Brookie won Open and UD ...but what I am most proud of was his work in UDX. We very nearly passed in our first trial with just the last leather in multiple retrieve costing us the quallie. He worked really well and whilst he is not really ready he showed an understanding of the exercises. I am stoked gooood boy!!!
  19. Very nice!!! Congratulations Hope you're training for Open!
  20. Woo Hoo!!! You gotta be happy with that!!! Good girls :D :)
  21. The throwing comes at the end of the SC method so I wouldn't be too concerned just yet. Many dogs learn to enjoy the retrieve when taught positively even though they don't have an innate desire hard wired in. Will she play tuggy? You can clicker train that too if you need to...I know because I did it with my non-tugging dog who now loves his tuggy!
  22. Maybe that could be an extra question...what training and at what level? I also did the survey and I thought some of the answers were definitely skewed by training. Oh, I think he tries not to be. :D You do the best you can. It's meant to be "in general". If you can't answer a question you can skip it. Thanks, I'll fix it. Yep, training (and previous experience) always has an effect. Unfortunately, it's virtually impossible to quantify a dog's learning history.
  23. ...and have a look at your footwork...are you cuing him consistently and does he know your cues?
  24. have you thought about titre testing for antibodies rather than vaccinating every year? Do a Google search.. I wouldn't be vaccinating an animal that had a bad reaction unless the antibodies were low.
  25. Parvo is rife up here. After a lot of research I chose to do the 7 (rather than 6) weeks, and additional 9 week which normally I wouldn't have done but whole litters have been lost that only had 6 week vacs, and then the 12 week one. I've spoken to 3 different vets and lots of vet nurses who have all confirmed that protocol for this particular time. I only do the C3. If it were winter I wouldn't be so concerned...its made socialising him a bit of a headache but you met him in Albany...shy he is not!!!!
