  1. I sortof have this issue with Zac... if I'm walking on the bridle path or somewhere narrow and have no room to move it becomes difficult. He is not re-active or aggressive in any way, he is far too friendly and he will mug people and other dogs if I allowed it. Obviously this is not something I want to encourage so I'm playing my version of LAT. As someone approaches I acknowledge there is a distraction there...(look at that or whatever you want to say), click and as he is turning for the treat I will pull (lure) front and shovel the food in until they pass. Its a bit clumsy but for him I couldn't let up the treating as he would instantly re-alert to them. It has become a lot easier now...as someone is coming he now is looking to me for the treat and I can dole them out more slowly. He knows the other dog/person is there within a few feet of them but if I am careful and keep his attention we can all pass nicely. I'm looking for this to become calmer and eventually I should be able to treat on the move and then drop the treats. It takes practice and I admit I've been slack of late due to other commitments so have walked them in a bigger space but I will get back to it. You have to be very diligent and have eyes in the back of your head so as to not allow self rewarding behaviour but this does seem to be working for us.
  2. Nice looking Toller Crappy throw of the frisbee!!!
  3. I really want a 'like' button! :D It is NOT the worst thing you can do! What you are seeing is an emotional response. It is not operative, therefore, it does not fall under the rules of the quadrants. You cannot reinforce it. I repeat, you cannot reinforce it. There is so much confusion around this and it drives me crazy because dogs suffer because people are too afraid to do anything lest they reinforce something that cannot be reinforced with rewards. Positive reinforcement creates a positive emotional state. Fear is a negative emotional state. They are antagonistic. One will win out. "Rewarding" fearful behaviour can only help change a fearful animal's emotional state to a positive one. The confusion I think lies in coddling. Lots of nervous energy around a dog that is already fearful does not make them feel better. Making baby sounds and cooing over them and so on may well make them worse, but not because it is rewarding. It just prepares them to feel frightened and arouses them so they become more reactive. Calm comforting will not make it worse. It probably won't make it better either, but I know dogs that it did help, my own being one of them. Some of us spent years stoically ignoring our fearful dogs because we thought it was best for them, only to try comforting as a last resort when they were old and we figured it couldn't get any worse. If your dog can't settle on their own, there is nothing at all wrong with comforting them if it calms them.
  4. Sorry angelsun...I don't know the exact timing. I know there are a few DWD judges around Australia who are not Obedience judges. Qld comes to mind.
  5. The core judges in WA were already obedience judges and a number of us had already had experience with unofficial competitions and demos. We had of course already done the ethics and rules and regs for our obedience judge accreditation. We have one judge on our panel who was not already an obedience judge and that person had to do the required ANKC rules and regs and ethics part of the exam.
  6. I'm still waiting for mine Sick as a dog today...I havent had flu for 3 years so I guess I was overdue.
  7. I heard about that....is that next to AMart and Harvey Norman?
  8. Just discovered that Butter Menthol and red wine do not make a good combination!!!!
  9. Some really lovely work in all classes at the Royal today UDX....just where was the UDX fairey???? She was not in WA today! We all failed the sendaway which is usually the best exercise! Very very distracting ring with lots of pressure from the crowds. Each dog did some lovely stuff and if we combined it all we would have had a nice score between us!!! Brookie won Open with a lovely score of 198 I picked up a lurgey and came home with a sore throat...oh well...a medicinal wine will help that!! Ptolomy's youngster Strauss was lovely showing huge potential for the future....bugga them sit stays!!!

Ptolomy's Strauss showed the huge potential he has with a bit of maturity...he worked so well but went down in the sit stay...abolish all stays I say!!!!
  11. I'm a bit embarrased to admit it but....my BC Cody (RIP) used to alert to the theme music to the Bold and the Beautiful!!!! I blame my mum for that! He would also react to any animal shows. He would run around looking to the back and sides of the TV to see if they would come out!
  12. How frightening! Would be worth asking a vet/acupuncturist to take a look. Crossing fingers everything is ok.
  13. ummmm loaded question Just look for the tri coloured Aussie next to the red dogs!!!! UDX starts at 9am and the classes follow in order...UD< Open, Rally demo in the lunch break followed by Novice and CCD im going to watch group 1 tomorrow, i will come say g'day. what time is the obedience on? and what do you look like?
  14. Congratulations kallistar Two quallies and a place at a Royal is a big deal...well done!!! Well today was the day for DWD at the Melbourne Royal and we came home with a Q and third place in Freestyle ( thanks Ness for giving me a shove) and a Q in HTM. I am so happy but as with all things Tux put his own spin on things so the routine went out the window but the most important thing is that we had fun. Thanks every one for you suggestions and cyber support
  15. Bring a chair and come say hello!!! We are now at Gate 1 next to the show dogs. Congrats! I'm coming to watch the obedience tomorrow(going to be a nigel no friends since Candice stood me up! :p ). Where has it moved to?
  16. Sorry can't help with Show entries...just have the performance catelogue.
  17. Well day one of the Royal over and our team LABB Tested (Lab, Aussie and two Borders) won the Agility and came second in the Jumping..Yay!!! Brookie did a couple of really nice runs which for the amount of training he has had was impressive!!! People kept asking why I don't run him in agility more often...nah!!!! Very hot in the afternoon and not a lot of room or shade when the sun comes in later on. Will be interesting tomorrow when the full contingent of agility competitors are there. We are having a rest day with Obedience on the Monday. Not feeling particularly confident as its an incredibly distracting ring...much harder than our old grounds up the top. Looks like we'll be having UDX, UD, Open, Rally demo, Novice and CCD.
