A client has a gorgeous Rott girl who has been plagued by fleas for a few months now despite Frontline monthly and flea baths. Rather than double or triple up on flea treatment I suggested she contact her vet and ask about Comfortis. She did and I bathed and dryed her girl today and for the first time in a long time...no fleas not one She is so much happier and for her it has worked really well.

As someone who plays dog sports... agility, obedience etc I would not purchase a dog that has been spayed or has a requirement to be spayed. I may do so depending on temparament or health considerations at a later date but I feel that is my decision to make. I truly understand why many breeders have become fed up and insist on sterilisation but personally I would prefer to find a breeder who trusts me and understands my reasons.

Ness don't wait so long....slow it all down. Try clicking while she is on her way...then delay the click until one paw touches it...then delay until she turns...then cue 'sit' click when she sits and throw food away so she has to get up and get it...then repeat.

Latent Learning, Retention And Insights

Yesterday I took my kelpie pup, Zac, sheepdog training for the first time...for both of us! Interesting that the instructor not only talked about body language and rewards (in the form of allowing the dog back on the sheep as a reward) but also latent learning. Have a go and let him see the sheep and a bit of a run at them...get a few turns in...that'll do and put him away to think about it. Get him out again and he has processed such a lot! Almost looked like he knew what to do! Third time I was told it will either be his best go or his worst...lets see... it was his best! Amazing! I have always trained obedience this way... 5 minutes at a time and then put him away to have a think. It also means you don't put too much pressure on for too long. I remember starting to teach Brooklyn scent work as a youngster and he was just not getting it. It wasn't that important as we were only in Novice at that stage so I forgot about it for a couple of months. When I started again he knew pretty much exactly what to do. -
And more rumbustious I was looking around and all these lovely puppies were sitting quietly with their owners...I had to actively keep Zac occupied the whole time!!! LAT to the rescue Booker was very well behaved! He met his match with bedazzleds pup though- about the only other puppy that was bigger than him :D

Disc / Frisbee Training
bedazzledx2 replied to BC Crazy's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Trick training and foundation agility training is mentally tiring and takes a surprising amount of energy. Intersperse that with tuggy as the reward and you have a workout! Dock diving would be soooo cool... -
No not keen on musicals or Disney! They make good routines but if I have to listen to it over and over it would drive me nuts!!!!

I've been bailed up in my car too...in suburbia! (Well semi rural suburbia) Big males can be very dangerous and I just had to wait until he hopped off. Dogs and roos...not a good match!

Disc / Frisbee Training

No way would I be doing frisbee with an 11 month old. Damage done now can last a lifetime and IMO is just not worth it. Personally I don't like frisbee or anything where the dog has to jump and catch and potentially land awkwardly and do a cruciate. I am a crap throw so it would all be on the dog! -
Babies???? You are worse than me Ptolomy! I have only just put Zac into puppy class! Technically he is still a puppy at 11 months and mentally I reckon he is about 6 months!!!! I'm just calling all training FLOGIT!!!!! Where have my downs gone???? FLOGIT!!!

Unfortunately excessive barking can really wreck a good routine and at worst get you DQ'd. If its only occasional most judges will only take up to a couple of points off but if it gets too much you can lose a whopping 4 points Back to the original title of this post....anyone think of some good music that isnt too daggy ...sorry don't like most 60's music ;) for heelwork to music? Trouble is I like Rock or Blues type music and that doesn't really lend itself.

Years ago there was a mini poodle here that worked UD and was regularly in the winners circle. Bob the dog who has just retired in NSW is a small cross breed...he is a Grand Obedience Champion! That is pretty special!!!!

I fed Zac raw right from the start along with a small amount of adult biscuits (Nutro or Advance I think) I was a little concerned about not getting everything right for a pup so I used the pre-prepared BARF patties from Better Pets, City Farmers etc.

Great explanation sheena :D i've been using it on my youngster who is distracted by...everything! So far so good.

Yep...I haven't taught Brookie a huge number of tricks but he knows spin, static weave between my legs, walking weave, heel backwards and sideways... Really good for motivation and reward in the ring between exercises. Also useful for you to learn how to teach a behaviour without it potentially messing with your obedience stuff. Shaping games are really fun :D

I feel your pain xena ;) Did a run through tonight with no treats and he nailed all the exercises..including dropping like a stone which he can't seem to manage in a trial....arghhh!!!!

An Aussie might just be included in the package!!!! I swear the boys text each other. Brookie didn't pee (he did that a few weeks ago at the Shepherd grounds ) but he and Moo both missed the sit in PIM...arghhh!!!!!!

Sheep horns are the absolute best for my three but they are really hard to source. Deer antlers are a good second but the kelpie chews his pretty quick and then starts playing with the nub and chucking it around in his mouth and I have visions of him choking on it so it goes in the bin Chicken feet are a hot favourite when I can get them and whole chicken carcase a couple of times a week.

KC often surfaces after the Royal. Add stress to lots of dogs in a confined space and the time of year when its prevalent...not surprising. One year I had an oldie, a youngster and Jasper in his prime...yep Jasper got KC! He only coughed a couple of times but I kept them all isolated for 2 weeks after the last cough. Maluka honey is good to help sooth the throat and the dogs love it

So glad to hear that emery

Be very careful of Tiger snakes...they can be aggressive if they feel threatened and are extremely venomous right now even baby snakes are very dangerous early in the season.
