Restorative Nutrition For Giant Breeds
witheverythingiam replied to wolfie333's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I have a skinny Boxer, who's hard to keep weight on - he's quite active. He's doing VERY WELL on "Great Barko" dog food, which quite surprised me as he;s a fussy eater, and it's a cheaper food to buy, but he just gobbles it up like he did when he was on Super Premium foods. -WithEverythingIAm -
Undescended Testicle Question
witheverythingiam replied to KismetKat's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
In case anyone's interested, the test the Vet referred to is the Ortolani test, as well as the x-ray's which will detect if any hip dysplasia or likelihood of hip dysplasia. Google is your friend. -WithEverythingIAm -
Undescended Testicle Question
witheverythingiam replied to KismetKat's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Sounds like the Vet wants to do the early age test for hip dysplaysia. Was the pups parents hip scored? Were their scores good? If the answer is yes, I would wait until a year to desex. If not, the reason they desex when under is if the pup is suspected of hip dysplasia, then they MUST be desexed whilst under. It's just an agreement they have if doing the test. The pups growth plates will be fused, and desexed at the same time. Having said that, most people who got the hips xrayed at 16 weeks, only 2 pups actually had visibly bad hips, and were done. That's a lot of pups which did not have bad hips. -WithEverythingIAm -
Advantix is toxic to cats also. And yes it's a top spot you can get from Vets/Pet shops/Online. -WithEverythingIAm

Deramaxx (deracoxib) might be a better alternative to Rimadyl (Carprophen). Ask your Vet if he stocks it? -WithEverythingIAm

Permoxin is the best, and probably cheapest product out there for flies. But don't use it if you have your dogs & cats mixing, as it's toxic to cats. -WithEverythingIAm

That happened years ago to our Boxer Rocky. The silly goose ripped it going under a barbed wire fence at my parents place. We tried just taping his ear, but he kept flicking the bandage off. In the end we used a sanitary pad to cover the wound (every time he flicked his ear it would tear a little bit more and flick blood of course also), and then use sticky bandage and go around the ear, then around his head. We didn't take him to the Vet straight away as he didn't even notice it pain wise (was still his usual bouncy happy self), so waited until the next day to get stitched up, and you wouldn't even be able to tell these days unless we told you and you inspected it. -WithEverythingIAm

If you're looking for a closed "chute" tunnel I have 1 here for sale. I'm in Hamilton Vic. PM me for more info. It's brand new still in box, has 2 different sized chutes. I imported it from the US about a year ago, but never used it. -WithEverythingIAm

Why is the wound so black underneath? Doesn't every vet do 3 layers of stitches like the one I worked for? The sutures look more like Vetafil than catgut. -WithEverythingIAm

Eagle Pack Power Vs Great Barko
witheverythingiam replied to witheverythingiam's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Never heard of it. Looked on website - can't say I've seen the packet anywhere before either. But then I live in SW Vic, so not likely to have a whole range of foods here. Is it available to buy online? There's no list of retailers on the company's website. I'd be prepared to give it a go. -WithEverythingIAm -
Eagle Pack Power Vs Great Barko

Yup it's great, Aussie, and only cheap as they don't have reps & spend $$$ on advertising on TV/print. -WithEverythingIAm -
Eagle Pack Power Vs Great Barko
witheverythingiam replied to witheverythingiam's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Yeah I wish they did a cat food too. I'd definitely give it a whirl! Especially if it was available in 22kg bags I've got my cats on Proplan, and a 3.6kg container only lasts a week feeding 4 cats. Less if we also have hungry, hungry kittens. -WithEverythingIAm -
Eagle Pack Power Vs Great Barko
witheverythingiam replied to witheverythingiam's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Yes you did, and Rocky says to say "Thanks Aunty KK!". Molly loves it too, but she's a Lab, and will eat anything you give to her. She eats all the Corn on the cob, as well as the leftovers of watermelon I've been enjoying lately LOL. She doesn't leave a scrap. -WithEverythingIAm -
OK, so I decided to grab a bag of Great Barko from the hardware store yesterday after reading the opinions about it here on DOL. My Boxer Rocky is a very fussy boy, and up until now he's been on Nutro, then over to Eagle Pack Power when that was no longer available in Oz. We've tried cheaper brands before, and he turns his nose up at it, and will only eat if if you stay there and coax him into eating his "yummy food". Anyway, I thought I'd test out yesterday and put 2 bowls down - 1 with EP, 1 with GB. Well blow me down, he sniffed at the EP, and the gobbled down the GB, then ate the EP after. Then for his evening meal, I mixed them together, and he ate the bits of Great Barko first, then the Eagle Pack after. If he keeps this up, I will no longer have to drive over 1hr to get my dog food from Petstock, and can get it locally for 1/4 the price. -WithEverythingIAm

Hysterectomy For Puppy
witheverythingiam replied to Dame Aussie's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
OMG! She's a freakin dog - she doesn't know what's natural & what's not! Do you care if she gets ovarian cancer? Who in their right mind would want a dog still coming into heat even though it's desexed. Talk about crazy! -WithEverythingIAm -

When A Good Idea Goes Bad

If you're just looking for something to add to the dry food for his hair, try "Sprint Oil" by Ranvet - my fussy boxer LOVES it - he tries to lick at it when I'm pouring it in his bowl. It's an omega 3 & 6 liquid addative, so also good for bones. -WithEverythingIAm -
Could be anything - even a grass seed, or a tumour - best to get checked by a Vet. -WithEverythingIAm

Medication Dispensing
witheverythingiam replied to giraffez's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
This was answered - perhaps you need to go back & read through the posts? Most Vets are little practices with 1 or 2 Vets, they're expected to keep on stock a whole pharmacy of medication, even ones which may hardly ever be used like tick & snake anti-venom, "just in case". They are usually a micro-business, which doesn't have much money coming in. Any medication they buy (in small quantities) has to be from Veterinary Wholesalers. Who said medications are marked up 100%? Where did you pull that figure from? They can not compete with huge chains of Chemist Wholesalers who buy 1000's of products at a time, which means costing less/item for the more bought. Think about it. -WithEverythingIAm PS - you have 2 (d) points -
Medication Dispensing
witheverythingiam replied to giraffez's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Yes, and we all know the PBS is NOT for animals, but for humans who need medication. I'll bet this person would kick up a stink like the ones in the newpaper on Sunday who are outraged by the fact a Vet was doing business after hours with a human chemotherapy hospital in Vic, because it was cheaper for the animals' owners. Wanting the rules bent, to suit oneself. -WithEverythingIAm -
Drowning Instead Of Swimming
witheverythingiam replied to BrunoBella's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Our Boxer Rocky can't swim without his Ruffwear K9 Float Coat. He's a bottom heavy boy when it comes to water - he does realise he has to kick those back legs as well as the front! -WithEverythingIAm -
Medication Dispensing
witheverythingiam replied to giraffez's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
How very true. If I were a Vet, I'd be very hesitant to write out scripts willy nilly for medication to be bought at the chemist, unless we couldn't get that particular medication from our suppliers (very unlikely). -WithEverythingIAm -
Medication Dispensing
witheverythingiam replied to giraffez's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
The only way to stop having to pay a dispensing fee would be to get Dr in front of your name, specialising in animal health $18 is a tad expensive though - usually it's only around $7, and the more you buy, of course the cheaper the medication end up being each. -WithEverythingIAm
