  1. Flux - I feel your pain :D its really hard and I'm not sure if I can help really just wanted to say your not alone We have a 17wk old Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy, we've only been taking her out for walks for a few weeks, at first we tried changing direction but like you say ended up going round in circles!! We now just stop dead when she starts to pull and it does seem to be working, they're only pups and it must be so frustrating with all the lovely sights, smells and sounds to explore. She was fantastic this morning on her little walk but each training session is different so who knows what tomorrow will bring With the coming to you on command maybe have treats handy or her favourite toy when you give the command and then she gets a reward for responding to her name? Good luck
  2. We've found a plant spray bottle filled with water very handy in stopping unwanted behaviour along with a sharp "No" . Then give him something to take his mind off what he's doing!!
  3. Is it compulsory to have the kennel cough vaccine if they're going in a boarding kennels? We may need to put pup in a kennel in Dec/Jan so that was why I went with the c5.
  4. Our vets said the same and Nala is due her 16wk vac at the end of this week, we havent taken her out yet apart from puppy pre-school + vet visits, she's doing well but has another dog to play with at home which helps ........ am I being overprotective and do you think its safe to go out
  5. I'm in Forest Lakes too, few hoons, had our car broken into recently but otherwise pretty quiet. If anyone is interested there is a teaching vet practise at Swan Tafe Bentley where we take our fosters for their sterilisation, vacc, teeth clean etc, they are cheaper than normal vets as they are teaching students and very good.. I took my boy to get this teeth cleaned, our local vet quoted $600-800 and Swan did it for $150. Thats a bargain
  6. He's gorgeous ......... congratulations ;) I'm new too, and after being told not to teach a 'sit' command before we got our puppy, it just sort of happened She copies our older dog and now sits beautifully . Our first show entry has been sent and so now I'm desperately trying to change the sit into a stand, poor girls a little confused ;) . My breeder is over east but her friend is here in wa and is giving me some tips....... one is to get a mirror to check the stack, keep checking in his mouth, say 'mouth' and get other people to do it too. Good luck
  7. Its a great idea and one my breeder and I had too. Nala came from Sydney to Perth ( I think with jetpets) and the vetbed our breeder sent didn't arrive in the crate She also flew a pup to Tasmania and their bed didnt arrive with them either ........ I must ask her if she found out what happened to them.
  8. We have had our puppy now almost 6wks and at first we did cover her crate at night, its supposed to make them feel more secure - we also leave a dim light on . I dont cover the front of the crate just the top and sides ...... also if she went in there during the day for a nap i didn't cover it then - my idea being she'd realise it gets covered when its a big sleep ;) . We havent covered her crate for the last few weeks because its been so hot, some nights we leave a fan on for her, do you think I'm going slightly overboard with my mothering, reading this post back I think maybe I am ;)
  9. We had this dilemma too not sure if to put our ridgeback puppy in our room at night. In the end we decided to try her where we wanted her to sleep in the long run (family room) and left her (huge!) crate in there. The first night she cried for a few minutes then went to sleep, each night it got less until now after her last wee outside she just goes straight to her crate and snuggles down, she's now just over 13wks old. We had a few tiring weeks of getting up in the night for a wee but now she usually sleeps till about 5am then its back in her crate until we're ready to wake up ........ this i've found the hardest, if only she could make it till 6am, its a much more sociable hour . Good luck, can't wait to see the photos

  11. I've been doing it now for about 3wks...... time flies Nala is just 12 wks old and so far we are tying her out, making her food, (she whines while we're doing this, sometimes worse than others, sometimes quiet) I put the food down out of reach, sometimes she's sitting sometimes pulling to get to it, but she now turns straight away and looks at me When I do 'ok' and release she's pulling to get to the food, do I start doing the stay now or should I already be doing it anyway When you do the stay is that a :- Yes.... well done for looking at me Stay ..... 10sec gradually increasing Ok .... release Thanks
  12. We moved from the uk to australia in 2008 and I found loads of info on the britishexpats website, they dont only do moving to australia so maybe have a look there or find one for moving to the us. Lots of people move with pets so there should be some advise/help on there?! Good luck with the move
  13. YES :D Thank you........ that worked much better, I put the bowl down out of reach and stood to the side on the right, she turned more or less straight away and looked at me She had stopped whining when i went outside with the bowl but started again once she saw me, I walked away from her, when she stopped I'd turn back round and head back for her but she would start again :D Should i have not gone to her until she's quiet? Think I already know the answer to that one
  14. Thanks for the reply............ I did start yesterday with the program, she didn't do too bad, its hard to tell if she's looking at me or the food, her eyes are so dark I've been holding the bowl with the food until she looks at me, should I put it down but out of reach? And then when she looks at me unclip the leash so she goes to the food? Thanks
  15. We got an octopus too, same thing happened our older dog would take off the legs and feed them to the puppy, fluff & all So the octopus is now a ball I was inspired after reading the thread again yesterday so got out the denim legs I'd cut off to make shorts and made a parcel each with bubble wrap in and also plaited some strips which the pup likes! Keep the ideas coming
  16. The ice block was a huge hit with kenzi and i've now got two ready in the freezer (got new pup last week) ready for later I've also put an almost empty large yoghurt tub in the freezer so I'll see how that goes down too. Out of an old pair of denim jeans I made a tug toy with newspaper rolled up inside so makes a crinkly noise which they seem to like. My best buys so far have been from salvos, got a king blanket which I cut into smaller ones for her crate, as they're often in the washing machine :D I also got some great baby toys/teething/noisy/crinkly stuff nala loves, obviously only given under supervision just in case but so far its holding up well Here's a photo of her with it.
  17. hi K9 We have a 9wk old ridgeback puppy (had her a week) and have been feeding her in her crate so she thinks its a good place! She is hyper when its food time, trying to get the older dogs food (we put his down first) and then very focused on her bowl as she runs to the crate. Do you think she's too young to start this progam? Also does it matter if its different people in the family doing it, ie older kids when we're at work or is that a good thing really? Thanks
  18. Charche is so infatuated with Asha. He follows her everywhere and even when they are on their beds he lays there and stares at her. That is so cute, congratulations
  19. No, as long as they are free of disease before bringing them to the grounds. Thanks, taking my puppy for her 2nd vaccinations on wednesday and just wanted to check
  20. Just a quick question for any of the wa people who show ....... does it matter which vaccination they have, c3, c5 etc in order for dogs to be shown?
  21. Thank you Her full title is Sunrij Western Dream and she's just that a dream
  22. Just thought I'd show off my new ridgeback puppy Nala to you She arrived in WA from Sydney of friday, she's 8wks old and very cute!!
  23. Dane sized door here and no issue. Good luck to them i say if they want to put their head through the door So where can I find 'big' dog doors? I have wanted to install one in the security door for a while now but as yet I've only been able to find small to medium sized doors I don't quite need a dane sized door but I do need a fairly big one :p We just got an extra large one (large one was much much smaller, it was a big jump from large to extra large!) from Better Pets & Gardens, they have 10% off at the minute nr us in wa. I've seen them in City Farmers and Bunnings too although the bunnings one was a little cheaper it came in two pieces so not sure if that would affect the security side This is the brand we've got http://www.piginmud.com.au/joomla/index.ph...4&Itemid=40 Our ridgie pup arrives today :D
