Hi and welcome to DOL Could it be that Astro is not stimulated enough during the day that he has turned to destruction? A work each day, instead of every 2nd, might tire his body and mind out a bit more. Toys like treat balls, kongs etc are great tools to use to keep busy minds occupied. We have a Border Collie puppy and if we dont keep her occupied, she occupies herself!

I call this one 'forward pike with a twist' whilst Bert tries to dodge the spray in the background Working 9-5, a pugs work is never done

I Am Eating An Ice Cream Sandwich....
Snout Girl replied to Dame Aussie's topic in General Dog Discussion
Sally checks to make sure I am watching then she stealthily sneaks into the toilet and makes sure she trots past me with a big toilet roll hanging out of her mouth ETA: I always share food with the dogs, my OH thinks its gross. when we have ice cream its one spoon for me, one spoon for bert, one spoon for me, one spoon for sally -
I got a Border Collie puppy and it sounds exactly like wuffles' Aussie pup. :D All I could say is based on my puppy. They need a lot of mental and physical stimulation. If you are able to provide that, then BC is the breed for you. I did a lot of research before getting a BC puppy but I still face a lot of problems with my boy when he came. He is so full on and what i meant by this is he needs a lot of exercise and attention. My boy is 15 weeks old and he needs about 30mins walk (twice), 1-2 hours of tug and fetch, and 2 hours of training. One good thing about my boy is that he can train for a long time. I can train him for like 30mins non-stop and he loves it(treats of course). He once went 5 hours without a sleep because we went to a friend's house and everything is so interesting for him (I dont think that is normal for a 12 week pup at that time). But he now settled very well and learnt to chew on his chew toys when I am not playing with or training him. He can be a bit mischievious if I ignore him for too long. Couple of points on BC in my case: They are a smart breed so you have to think one step ahead of them. He learn each trick in 1 day. He had learnt not to jump up on people and other dogs or he won't get to play or be patted. He NEVER barks at any dog or people. The only times he barks is when he doesn't want to sleep and I put him into his crate, and at strange objects he never seen. They want to play, play and play (thats my puppy). They are a joy to have and they are just so lovely They will reward you if you treat them well I am also looking at adding another four-legged friend into my household but it will be when my boy grows up (maybe in 1 or 2 years time). The breed I choose will depend on how he grow up to be. Good luck on choosing. wow thats a lot of exercise for a 15 week old puppy whos bones and muscles are developing. just be careful your little guy doesnt overdue it Sally is almost 15 months and she doesnt need that much exercise. she gets 1 hour- 1 1/2 hours lead walk/off lead ball throwing, a few short bursts of training, a few throws of toys at night and she runs around with bert. she is fit, healthy, and not destructive (except when there are sheets on the line ) it depends on the temperaments of the breeding stock- sally came from non working, not highly strung stock. you just need to do your research first good luck

Breeders' Conditions When Selling A Puppy
Snout Girl replied to Zug Zug's topic in General Dog Discussion
Our BC boy died from poisoning from the annual heartworm injection. He was a rescue, and we hadn't been told anything about risks involved with certain vaccines. We simply trusted our vet (we didn't know we had any reason not to) when they offered the injection, and after a full year of on-and-off illness, with us having no idea what was going on, he passed 6 weeks after the second injection from a massive haemorrhage (sp). So, there is validity in vaccination conditions I think. I think going so far as to say you cannot vaccinate your dog ever is going too far, but making a point of educating new puppy buyers (and warning against) certain vaccines and medications can in the end save the dog's life. I wish we'd had the knowledge. add: I think some of those conditions are rather ridiculous and would ward off many a pet puppy buyer. I advise my puppy buyers to steer clear of the yearly heartworm injection. I tell them it is ultimately their choice, however as the injection is an *mectin product, some collies may be sensitive to it. I know of BC people who use it without issue. I know of breeders who use it without issue. The company who makes the product of course claim it is safe to use on collies. And people who may have been using the monthly form of it, will not think twice about going to the yearly form for convenience. I prefer the monthly heartworm. For one, if there is going to be a reaction to it, it is a month base and not a year base if you needed to try to counteract it. It is important to note, the heartworm injection is different to the vaccinations. And like ANY medication, reactions can be individual. I'm concerned now. Neither our breeder or our vet mentioned anything about bcs being sensitive to heartworming. we dont use the injection, so is it only this that causes problems? or is it things like tablets and advocate also? -

Bloody American Cops! Good stuff! :D -
Ok so I am up to page 8 talleying all the breeds Its a slow process! :p I am not seperating different types of the same breed (ie. long or short coat, working or non working etc) as it would just take too long! The results so far..... We have the big dogs leading the charge with GSDs, Dobermanns, Rottweilers and Standard Poodles ranking highest. Following hot on the tails we have (appropriately! lol) Australian Shepherds and Border Collies. Greyhounds and Golden Retrievers round out the most popular thus far. Very intersting, lets see what the next few pages brings! (when I get time to count them lol)

I leave my two with pigs ears when my OH and I are at work. But I didnt start until they were about 6 months and I had supervised their pig ear eating enough to know be confident they would be ok
-
am currently in the process of tallying up the results to see which dog is the most popular on people's wishlist Its a long process tho so stay tuned! currently I am up to page 5!

Just go on there and do a search, it'll come up quickly It was $17.99. hey fran it says you have to buy the AC adaptor seperately to plug it into the wall, have you been able to locate it for sale? I cant find it anywhere and dont want to have to run it only on batteries all the time -

I bought a bubble machine for bert for xmas but it needs a person to pull the trigger, its not automated. also bought refills of bbq chicken bubbles and bacon bubbles and he hates it and wont use it -
A dog at our offlead park attacked bert a few months ago. luckily he was ok. owner didnt give a sh!t and told us to get out of their park (it was an informal group meeting of a certain breed) as we were leaving (straight away) we hear a horrible sound and turn around and the same dog is attacking another small dog. this dog appeared to be injured but we couldnt catch the owner as they rushed to their car straight away. rang the council the next day. they took a msg and said someone would get back to me. 2 days later a man called me back. explained what had happened. he said it would be difficult to catch the offenders as the group meets at 8pm at night and the rangers dont go out that late he said the best advice he could give would be to avoid the park when they meet (which of course we were going to anyway, havent been back on that day since) I am hoping you get a better response from your council than we did. I live in fear that I will hear about a dog seriously injured as a result of this dog.

Hello everyone I am in the process of purchasing a new slicker brush and a comb for Sally on the advice of my groomer. I have been doing some research on similar topics on this website and have found a few names and wondered what people thought of them? So far I have seen recommended: Doggyman slicker Vista professional comb Lawrence brand of brushes Les Poochs Would others recommend any of these and if so, where do they purchase them from? Any input would be great oh, am not looking for a coat stripper like a mars coat king more of a day to day sort of brush

What Don't Most People Know About Your Breed?
Snout Girl replied to RallyValley's topic in General Dog Discussion
No, Sally is not an Aussie Shepherd- or a Koolie- or an Aussie Shepherd x Koolie ;) - she is a merle border collie. yes, they do exist. and yes, she is a purebred. and before you ask, she is desexed, so no, she cant be mated with your gorgeous bc x kelpie x labradoodle. I understand everyone you know wants a puppy from said cross but we got Sally as a pet, not a disposable breeding machine avaialble to every tom, dick, or harry. No, she is not blind because she has one half blue eye its quite common in merles. Pugs are not stupid- quite the opposite actually. Bert is all set to start competing in obedience trials in 6 months or so. No, my pug didnt run into a parked car/get hit in the face with a cricket bat etc. and no, he is not so ugly he is cute, he is just a spunk -
and a week off :D well that goes without saying!
