  1. He pooped again last night i reversed his meals 3 or 4 days ago, so he now gets his raw meaty bones in the morning and dry in the evening. Last night he had a cup of dry with a raw egg at 5pm and was locked in the crate at 11pm. At 5am i heard him rustling around in the crate so i jumped out of bed and sure enough he had pooped. The strange thing is that he's not crying prior to pooping to let me know he has to go outside, he just does it and by the time i get to him he looks a little distressed and huddled in the corner of the crate away from the mess. I certainly don't want to make him sleep outside, especially going into winter, so any suggestions would be appreciated.
  2. maybe lamb flap for the little fella, and something a bit more substantial for the old boy, roo tail.
  3. Yes, he has been crate trained from day dot and loves it, it's the only spot where the kids can't hassle him. Yes, dry in the morning and raw in the evening, around 5-6pm, so doesn't get locked in the crate until 5 hours after his last meal. I didn't think to reverse his meals, although he gets very excited when i prepare his dry food in the morning as he absolutely loves it (Artemis) and can't wait to see what surprise might be mixed in with it, sardines, egg, yoghurt etc. Good news, no accident last night it's funny, as soon as i opened my eyes this morning, the first thing i did was sniff the air to see if he'd pooped. I think i'm slowly turning into a dog
  4. Our 8 month old pup has pooped (fairly runny and very very smelly ) in his crate two nights in a row now. His poos during the day are normal, firm, not smelly and no change in diet. He goes out for a last toilet break at 11pm and then is locked in the crate until approx 6:30am. His general health and activity levels are all ok and there are no other symptoms. He has been toilet trained for quite a while now and hasn't had any accidents in the house for months. Could it be some sort of tummy bug where it only effects him overnight, is this even possible in dogs? I really don't want to be cleaning up poop at 3am for a third night in a row and opening all windows and doors to get rid of the smell, so any suggestions would be appreciated. Should i cut out his evening raw meal (roo, chicken, lamb) and stick to all dry for a couple of days? Then again, the raw has never been a problem in the past.
  5. What about the good old bi-carb soda? sprinkle it on the carpet and let it sit for 20-30 mins, then vacuum, that's what we do. We also have a designated dog rug which he sits/sleeps on when not in his crate.
  6. Great video, thanks for the link. I must admit we have been complacent with the 'leave it' command and our games of tug can go on for ages without the dog letting go and eventually ending in a stalemate.
  7. Yep, very special relationship... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uobC0V8nSCo
  8. We had similar problems with our pup mouthing whilst clipping nails... after some thought i remembered how well behaved he was when the vet clipped them so that got me thinking. the only thing the vet did differently was to have the dog sitting on a bench rather than the floor. So i put our pup on the table the next time i clipped his nails and guess what, he didn't move a muscle!! now we put him on the table to clip nails, groom, apply spot flea treatments etc and he is generally ok. worth a try.
  9. Reading through previous threads it seems the general consensus on this site is that Advantage is a better product than Frontline Plus... am i right in making this assumption? Does Andvantage cover ticks as well? More than happy to switch brands if there is a better option... is it safe to use Advantage in conjunction with Sentinel Spectrum? Should i be using a different brand of wormer? What combination of wormers and flea/tick treatments do others use in Northern Sydney? Totally confused now...
  10. We live in Sydney's Northern Beaches and are currently using Frontline Plus on our 6 month old pup fortnightly. When is the tick season considered to be over and safe to switch to monthly doses of Frontline Plus? We also give him Sentinel Spectrum monthly, is the combination of the two ok, or is there a better option? We have just found a few fleas on our strictly inside only kitten who doesn't get any flea treatments... could he have picked them up from the dog despite the dog being on frontline plus and sentinel spectrum? I haven't seen any fleas on the dog.
  11. Sandra, His parents are approx 22kg and 19kg, so we are expecting him to hit the 20kg mark at full maturity. I just checked the Artemis site, and his mix is actually a medium/large breed puppy formula, http://www.artemispetfood.com.au/dog_10.htm full product range is here, http://www.artemispetfood.com.au/products_dog_1.htm I still have half a bag left ($50 worth) so not so keen to toss it out. Should i put him straight onto the adult formula once he finishes this bag? They have a regular and weight management formula. So it's ok to give him Vit C daily, or every other day to be on the safe side? Just an update, i clipped his nails this morning, is this more of the length i should be keeping them at? Last pic, i promise, here's the little fella... Thanks for putting up with my jibber jabber, but we really want to put our minds at ease.
  12. Don't think he's overweight, you can feel his ribs and his belly tucks away at the rear.
  13. He gets a cup of dry in the morning, and approx 300-350g of RMB in the evening, along with the extras mentioned above a couple of time a week.
  14. He was 16kg two weeks ago, at 6 months of age. Yep, he is on Artemis medium breed puppy formula. Again, what type dosage of Vit C. He gets walked almost every day (15-20 mins max) on a combination of concrete/grass, plus whatever games we play in the backyard.
  15. Ellz, at what age can we expect his chest to really start filling out? How often, how much and what type of Vit C should we be giving him? No, the veges aren't cooked, i simply put them through a blender with a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar. I normally clip his nails every two weeks or so, should i be doing it say weekly? I couldn't agree with you more re your last comments... unfortunately it wasn't until after we got him home, that i started reading in depth threads regarding breeding, and what to really look out for when searching for a pup. We just assumed that buying from any registered breeder was the way to go and the right thing to do.
  16. No, not his dew claws, it is his outer most toe on each foot. You can see it in this pic.
  17. I suspect that our pup’s front feet are slightly deformed, and looking for some advice. I did search through past threads and came across east/west front and Valgus Deformity, so i guess i'm looking for some confirmation. He is a 6 month old Staffordshire Bull Terrier (desexed 2 weeks ago), currently on Artemis dry food for brekky and either chicken wings, roo tail, chicken carcass, lamb flap or roo mince for dinner. He also gets raw eggs, sardines, mashed vegies and yoghurt a couple of times a week. The breeder raised the litter on Supercoat dry and Optimum wet which we soon changed to Advance and now Artemis. He is doing well on Artemis and his coat looks great. He is in no visible pain, and his feet don’t seem to bother him at all. He has a short toe on each front foot which the vet told us won’t cause any problems apart from regular nail clipping, but we’re more concerned about the outward angle of the feet, and the apparent narrowness at the top of the elbows (hope that makes sense). You’ll notice that one of his toes turns outwards as well. I did speak to the breeder when we noticed the short toe but this was before we noticed the angled feet. She sent some photos of his parents and you can clearly see that mum has the same issues. She did say that the short toe has never caused her a problem, but again, we didn’t cover the angled feet. Here are some pics of our pup: If you look closely at his front right foot in the following pic, you can see that how outward turned his foot can be depending on how he stands And a pic of mum: Other threads suggest that diet and supplements may help…any advice would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for the long post, but we are worried and want to make sure our pup is ok.
  18. Swap the ball for a treat, he will soon learn that giving up the ball is a good thing as he gets something tasty and gets to chase the ball again. then slowly reduce the frequency of treats. other more knowledgeable folk may have better suggestions.
  19. Does anyone have a used copy of this DVD they are willing to sell?
  20. I know it's fairly normal for the scrotum to swell after surgery, but when can we expect it to start reducing in size? It's been two days since his surgery. Also, as mentioned above, he is wearing an elizabethan collar which the vet advised to leave on him until the sutures are removed in ten days. Would it be ok to remove the collar in say another three or four days once he is pain free and less likely to lick/pick the sutures? He seems pretty uncomfortable in the collar and looks really silly
  21. Our boy was done yesterday, he has a elizabethan collar as he was picking at the sutures and vet prescribed metacam for a week. He was pretty sleepy yesterday and whined on and off during the night, poor boy. He woke up full of beans this morning and launched himself off the pergola . He spent most of the day in the run in an attempt to keep him calm, but whenever i went in there, he went nuts and just wanted to play. Trying to keep him settled and not ripping off the collar is proving the most difficult part. He's finally sound asleep in his crate The kids were upset to see him in pain yesterday and made him get well cards ;)
  22. It will come in handy in winter That makes sense, i'm going outside now to trod on his toes and see if he likes it!
  23. Our 6 month old Stafford walks right under our feet, sometimes causing us to stumble as we don't want to step on him. He seems to only do it if he's excited and hasn't seen us for a while. When i come home, he will walk in between my legs and not at my side or he will cross over right in front of me. When i ask him to sit he will plonk his bum on my feet... it's almost like he is trying to crawl into my skin... i know he misses us and wants to be as close as possible, but it's an accident waiting to happen. Is this normal behavior for pups, and what can we do to discourage it?
  24. I too asked for a sample from Artemis before christmas and it arrived today. I took the plunge and bought a bag of Artemis 3 weeks ago, and our Stafford has thrived on it! coat is looking better already.
  25. I missed the episode last night, does anyone have a link to watch it online?
