  1. I am in East Doncaster. I have a wonderful groomer but would like to tearn to trim Cindy's face and feet in between sessions.
  2. Thanks for all the recommendations-I think I will start tomorrow though-11 adults, 4 children aged between 14 months and 7, and 3 dogs for a roast meal does not seem like a good start to this new skill! ETA The dogs aren't having a roast but I do have special treats for them.
  3. Thanks for this advice-I will start tomorrow and keep you informed!
  4. I have a poodle X and I am interested in learning to clip her myself. What equipment would I need and does anyone know if I can go and learn what to do. I am keen to do a workshop rather than a professional course.
  5. A basic query from a newbie! People keep mentioning games for training such as "steady feet" and "2 toy game." My question is is there a web site or book that lists these games and their uses. I am keen to intoduce Cindy to the dumbell. Any hints? She is not actually renowned for her retrieval skills. BTW I think Cindy has the "steady feet" game down well. Kept still for pieces of sausage today-at long last we may be able to get a good SFE. Thanks for all the tips.
  6. Thanks for the encouragement-I feel this progress is very small when I watch the videos in these threads. You should have seen her SFE BEFORE I knew about this game. SFE used to equal roll over for a tummy rub or hello or an auto sit. Part of the problem was that when I take her to nursing homes to visit I taught her to sit for a pat. SFE then = sit for a pat. More steady feet game time! Any other suggestions would be welcome. I have learnt so much here!!! BTW the only downer last night was that a rat started to sniff my bum bag (foutunately after I took it off!) and I am totally rodent phobic. Some wag called out if there was an JRT around.
  7. Well I never thought that I would have anything to add to this topic although I read it all the time. I went to Friends of Obedience tonight at KCC Park to give a CCD trial a go. I have only ever seen 1 trial so was a real newbie at this. Boy did Cindy do well. A clear pass with healing. SFE-moved her 2 front legs (but that is awesome for her). Recall perfect recall but would have lost a couple of points for the way she and I walked up the other end of the ring-I was geeing her up but was told it was a bit untidy. Perfect sit stay-did not even break when a dog sniffed her tummy. AWESOME! Perfect drop stay. I am stoked! I need to work on my heeling footwork-walk faster but with smaller steps and improve her lagging. I was rapt that whe did not miss any auto sits, drops or stands! Her stands are weak so the fact that she got them all was amazing.
  8. I came across this site on another forum and thought it might be useful for others http://www.petalert.com.au/faid/fa1.php It is a very comprehensive list of first aid situations for dogs.
  9. As far as getting others to help set out equipment etc. Can you send out a newsletter asking for help? Can you add that those assisting will have first go on the equipment? If someone always arrives late amd wants your help can you be busy at the moment with someone else? Shape their behaviour? Can your committee help you? Well done for your commitment-I hope you can get some help!
  10. What has really stirred me to action is the number of PMs I received from other people saying they had a similar issue with their dog and *were too scared to post for fear of being flamed!* In the past I have witnessed some terribly cruel and unprovoked personal attacks on this forum especially on Newbies who come here with very little knowledge (in some cases) seeking help and advice from these *more experienced dog people* The response that they sometimes get is so withering and so vitriolic that they leave the Forum never to return. If people are too scared to post in the first place then reporting is not going to help them. This is a public forum and different opinions need to be expressed. Perhaps we should stop and think before posting and express an "unpopular" opinion in a kinder way. The advice may well be better received in this way. Good on you for raising this Brooke!

  13. To return to the OP-I was showing a dog lover DOL and clicked on this thread. A look of total amazement and confusion and almost embarassment came over her face. It turns out that in her state (USA) a thong is a g-string. She thought the owners had taken them off and attached them to the lead. Just had to share that one to lighten the start to the week!
  14. I have been reading the thread below about instructors but I was prompted to start a different one after training this week. Week after week they turn up, answer the same questions and help with owners who are struggling. They do a great job. Last Sunday a lady was walking her dog around and watching. One of them approached her and encouraged her to join up. She didn't want to because her dog can't even sit. After some discussion she joined up. You have encouraged and supported me and helped me train a dog to a level I thought was impossible. And to all the trainers here who post a big thanks! So to all the obedience volunteers (and trainers here) :D And a big THANK YOU!
  15. Does it only happen on DOL? Try rebooting your PC.

  22. I can't believe this http://www.abc.net.au/news/video/2010/03/17/2848276.htm There is no way I would put my dog in this. Wouldn't it just scare them?
