  1. Because I dont want to hand out a non-refundable $100 deposit on a dog that hasnt been born yet to dogs that I havent even met!
  2. Some people are getting very defensive. I havent said anything against breeders. I have, however, said that SOME breeders need to step outside their box and look at it from a buyers point of view. Some dont want to do that, and thats fine...just dont always expect positive feedback. I prefer email to phones because then the breeder is making a point of having some time so sit down and actually read my email, rather than be busily doing something and have the phone ring. Plus I also have a busy household, so making a time to call via email first would suit both sides. I rang a couple of Staffy breeders many years ago for my friend who doesnt like talking on phones, and both of these breeders were in the middle of something and asked me to email them and they'd answer that when they werent so busy. Could hear alot of commotion in the background, so I did as they asked. Didnt hear back from either. I know this isnt the case for all breeders and I am certainly not clumping all breeders together, but it doesnt look good when you've had nothing but bad experiences from different breeders. Im not being lazy. Im not being rude. Im not being naive. My title was 'No Wonder Ppl Go To Byb and Petshops', NOT 'Im going to a Byb or petshop!'. Some people have PMed me about different ACD breeders and rescue companies, and thank you, I will follow up on those.
  3. Excellent post. That was my general purpose for this thread. Alot of breeders need to see where the average dog buyer is coming from. Some look down on people who go to a byb or petshop, but you never know, they might have been someone that a breeder has been too busy to email back or deemed not good enough from one email.
  4. Here is where Im at.... I want an ACD puppy. A purebred ACD puppy.Have been looking for the right one for months. Thought I would do the right thing and go through a breeder. I would prefer to get one from WA because at least then I can go and look at the pups for myself and meet the breeder. I dont want a pup with a thousand bells and whistles. I want an ACD that is healthy and happy. Thats it. Can a breeder please tell me what is wrong with that? I recently had to put down my best friend of 8 years. A 12yr old boxer that I rescued from the pound. I have plenty of room in my house, a child, everything a dog needs, and all the love to give it. Why the hell would I be not worthy? In answer to a PP, I didnt write this thread just to complain. I wrote it so that breeders could see what it looks like from the outside and understand why some people throw their hands up and look elsewhere for a companion. I believe that sometimes the breeders cant see the forest through the trees. I get it...you, as a breeder, dont have to. Your doing just fine. You have wait lists for your puppies and dont need my 'business'.....doesnt mean that I would be an unfit home for one of your dogs.
  5. I got the breeders from a list online of Perth breeders. Wont say which because Im not sure if Im allowed. I used 'Blue Heelers' because their website used it many many times instead of ACD, so I assumed I wouldnt be frowned upon by using it myself. I assume the dogs arent on hold because in the past when they have had litters available, the pics they put up instantly have 'Sold' or 'on hold' writting beside each corresponding puppy, and these newer litters have 'available'. I most definitely didnt reply to that email because, from what I received, I do not wish to purchase one of their pups. I honestly did not expect doing the right thing and going through a breeder would be this upsetting and difficult. I assumed breeders would be welcoming and friendly, happy to talk about their dogs. I understand them being protective, but it came across very money-hungry. If I walked into a shop and said "I'd like to by a stereo" and they said "sure give me $100 and then I'll think about showing you some", id walk out the door. (And yes, I know a pup is nothing like a stereo....just using it as an analogy)
  6. The amount of 'leg work' that some breeders expect, should go both ways. I understand they want the best homes, but I also want a good dog. Why should I reveal everything about myself when they wont even reveal anything about themselves? I could easily list all my qualities in an email, but I feel as though I should get some kind of level of respect from them, because I would want one of their dogs. The could have dodged that particular question and answered my other ones. To some people, its not just any dog they want. I really liked this breeders dogs and wanted one of theirs, but their reply email came across as 'give me $100 and then we'll talk'. To a buyer, thats not worthy of my time. They cant expect me to hand over $100 without giving me SOME kind of information. I thought I was doing the right thing by asking about her dogs, asking to be able to come and see them and her, DID NOT mention price at all....these are all things I have learnt on this forum to do when emailing a breeder. With this kind of a reply its just easier to pick up a newspaper and find a dog that way. Like I said, no wonder people are turning to pet shops and backyard breeders. I have been more than happy to wait and have been looking for a long time. To get this kind of a response just baffled me. Would also like to point out, I posted in the ACD section of this forum asking any breeders if i may come and meet their dogs...I have had no replies there either.
  7. I have been looking for a blue heeler puppy for at least 8 months now. I have emailed Perth breeders and tried calling. I got back ONE email. This is what i sent... I am very interested in buying a gorgeous Blue Heeler puppy, purely for pet purposes. I have emailed before and didnt receive a reply, so I thought I would try again. Would you please be able to tell me a little bit about your pups and what the criteria is, to be considered by you to give one of these pups a forever home. I would also love to be able to come and visit your dogs if possible. Thank you This is the reply I got... We do not have any puppies at the moment, but we do run a puppy waitlist where a $100 deposit (non refundable) is paid and people wait until we have puppies available. Do you wish to go on the waitlist? Puppies sell for $700 without papers. If you wish other information, please phone *name and number here* WTF! That wasnt helpful at all! Its no wonder people go to backyard breeders when real breeders either wont return calls or emails, or dont offer the information that was originally asked! Also, that email was sent at the start of Feb and i have just checked their website and they had 2 litters a week later and the pups arent sold or on hold apparently
  8. When i was with my ex, i really really wanted to get a dog from the pound. He said "No, because we dont need another dog and we arent even going to LOOK because youll fall inlove with one and we'll have to get it". I convinced him to go. We walked in and slowly began walking down the dreadful isle. A teeny tiny dog actually squeezed through the bars and ran over to us. My ex picked the dog up and looked at me. We both frowned and the ranger came over and took him off us and said that dogs owners were coming to get him. We shrugged and walked to the next 'cell'. There sitting towards the back was a gorgeous boxer. He placidly walked to the front and sat down. My ex put his hand through the bar and pat the boxer. The boxer stood up and put his front legs over my exs hand and pinned it down. He leaned his head against my exs hand and ast still, LOVING the pat. My ex looked at me and said "he's ours". Today he is roughly 10years old and still kicking. Such a gorgeous boy. My ex kept him when we split but whenever the dog see's me he comes over as fast as he can and pins me down for cuddles. He is still the best dog Ive ever seen. Thats how we chose from the pound.
  9. So Cute!! Here are my two... Sorry, I dont know how to load bigger pictures Lol

  12. My brother just finished building his home and is interested in getting a ACD. I have emailed a few Perth based breeders on his behalf asking if we may come visit, but havent received any replies. If there are any Perth breeders who wouldnt mind myself and my brother come for a visit, can you please PM me. I thought it would be good for him to go and see the dogs and pups etc. before he decides for certain if he wants one.
  13. Totally agree. My emails to breeders weren't blunt 'how much'. I did ask other questions and those were not answered either by them or on their website and some of the breeders who have posted in this thread have said if an email asks anything about a price they are instantly dismissed. THATS what shocked me.
  14. I guess when it comes down to it, buyers and breeders need to see the other side. I can totally understand why a breeder might not want to put a singular price on their website, as their prices may vary. I understand that the breeders are going to interrogate me before considering letting me buy one of their dogs. But some breeders need to remember that buyers arent all dog enthusiasts. Some just want a purebred and know that by going to breeder that is what they will get. They dont know that by simply asking 'how much' is going to get them rejected. Breeders, look from the other side of the glass. You want a purebred. You figure you'll do the right thing and email some breeders asking a price. None email back. Then what? You cant treat your potential customers like they dont exsist, then throw your arms up in the air about people going to backyard breeders and pet shops. YES, it is entirely your choice to approve them or not, but shouldnt you give everyone a chance to impress you? The buyer obviously chose you to email for a reason. How difficult is it to write an email back saying 'Our pups vary in price between $$$ and $$$$. This includes their tests blah blah blah etc etc. Contact me if you are still interested'. Like somebody said, it only takes a minute to reply to an email. But this is all coming from a buyers prospective. I realise that the breeder doesnt NEED my business and can easily sell an entire litter in a snap of a finger to other great homes.....its just annoying to think that my home would be considered unworthy because I asked how much
  15. Just thought Id add something. My friend told me today that a pet shop in a major shopping center is selling 'purebred pugs' with no papers or pics of mum and dad for....................drum roll please.................... $1900
  16. Bumping. Interested in as much Bulldog info as possible.
  17. Most pet shops in Perth sell puppies for around that price too. Must be the general 'going rate'.
  18. I am a 'normal' pet owner. I have read and researched about the breed I am interested in. My point was, the certain breeders website had all the information about all the dogs. Test results, show results etc etc. To me, that means NOTHING. I assume a quality breeder will sell me a healthy, well bred dog. Why would i then go and ask the breeder via email what kinds of tests they do? The answer is right there on the webpage. What isnt there is a PRICE. That only thing I need to know before I decide for sure if I want to be considered for one of their dogs, and yet the breeders are reluctant to tell me?!?! What else is my initial email supposed to say other than what I want to know, the only thing that they website didnt tell me about their dogs (price), especially when I had to fill in a personal survey to accompany the email.
  19. You know the ballpark figure for a BB on limited register is $2K to $3K. My major concern would be whether you could establish a good rappport with the breeder and getting a healthy puppy from Health tested parents with some kind of health guarantee, not the price. All of that information WAS on their site. To send and email to them I needed to fill out a form with all of my details and reasons why I would want one of their pups, whats my home like, do I have children, other pets etc. etc. I think breeders need to remember not assume that the person on the other end of the email just rolled out of bed and decided to rush out and buy their dog. I have spent time researching and deciding. I understand it is completely the decision of the breeder as to whether my home would be good enough for one of their dogs, and that is why I give them all of the details that they ask of me. But at the same time, I dont think I should be instantly rejected because I would like to know the price. I would be more wary of someone who has cash to simply throw around and isnt interested in a price at all. Am I less deserving than somebody who has cash to blow? When I email the breeder, I dont want to waste their time. I figure its a bit of give and take. I give them all the information they ask of me, and expect to be given information back. If they sent another email clearly stating that before they release a price they want me to write out my life story and include photos and go to shows, then thats fine, I'll do those things. Or, if they have decided already that they dont want me to have one of their dogs, then just tell me. I would rather that, than a dismissive reply or no reply at all. Im not at all having a go at breeders and their methods, just honestly finding out information. Its good to know how things work from breeders perspectives.
  20. Im happy to see answers from 'both sides'. It is a little frustrating not to have even a general idea how much the breed your looking up is going to cost you. I have sent an email to a specific breeder and asked about price and a couple of other things. The email I received back basically said 'look at our website'. That annoyed me because I had read EVERYTHING on their website and obviously my questions weren't answered. Saddens me to think that they might have given me the cold shoulder response just because I had the 'nerve' to ask how much
  21. A serious question to breeders. How come almost all the websites for breeders say absolutely nothing about the prices of their puppies? I would think that most breeders are sick of getting emails just wanting to know how much they charge. Can somebody please fill me in? On that note, can anyone also tell me the 'general' price for a British bulldog pup for pet purposes (not breeding or showing) Thanks
  22. Im having the exact same problem with my new poodle X. He is 12 weeks old. Ive tried the heat pack and the shirt.....doesnt stop him at all. He scratches and yelps non-stop which is becomming VERY hard to deal with. Interested to read any more answers to this question.
