  1. you need to desex the bitch at least asap or you'll have more then 2 to look after!
  2. In Victoria it is illegal to have any greyhound off leash in a public place, including dog parks. I also thought Queensland has had no muzzle rules in place for quite a few years as does several councils in NSW (going on comments off a greyhound yahoo group from several years ago). Lot's of dogs are unmuzzled and off leash who shouldn't be. Deed not breed springs to mind. I have showbred greyhounds. Have to go back nearly 100 years to find the last racing dog in their pedigree. Raised in the home with cats. Neighbours cats (and their free ranging bunny) were/are fair game to my dogs. As they were to my GSD's. And to my smallish pound pup. And birds! The GSD's didn't care about the birds but the greys and the pound pup have/did all dine on them. I'm totally in support of the muzzle off law. Deed not breed!
  3. You can always attach a roof to the pen. Use shadecloth and plastic zip ties. I'm glad you are going to look into a safe outdoor option for her. I'm not a fan of the bathroom idea. At the very least make something in a room near a window so pup can see various things.
  4. no, they were still being bred but the breeders were up against it with a small gene pool
  5. GSD's were banned from being imported for many many years. Around 43 years. Kudo's to the breeders in Australia that managed their breed so well without being able to bring in fresh blood lines.
  6. I wouldn't allow someone to pick a pup from a photo of 2 week olds. I've lost sales because people wanted to pick a pup purely based on looks and not wanted to wait until I had decided which one I was keeping, not to mention matching the personalities. Nor would I take a deposit on a pup. But, lots of breeders do do what the OP has just described (not the changing of the mind bit). Ring them, it's the only way to sort things out.

  8. Advertise all over the place. It's not where you advertise, it's how you vet the potential owners that counts.
  9. My cat is coming up to 14 and no issues and has eaten supermarket food her whole life, as have all my previous cats, who all died from between 12 and 18. My dogs dry food mainly comes from the supermarket and while it is not their main food it doesn't appear to have done them any harm either.
  10. If you think they were maggots check around her anus in case she has a sore/wound. AFAIK maggots wouldn't come from within unless there was a wound that had tunneled. Yep ask the vet but I would reworm her with a different active ingredient.
  11. it's a great piece and they were great shows
  12. Actually all my breeding dogs, past and present, live in the house with me and you'll find many others are the same. I don't ever have enough dogs to need to farm them out to others under the term "guardianship". Just a fancy name to have more dogs to breed and make money from.
  13. I wouldn't get a puppy with a 13 yo. What makes you think she want's company? IMO she deserves to live out her life in peace, not being annoyed by a pesky pup.
  14. take your time. If she has spent most of her life outside, I'd be leaving her outside for a while, just slowly increase time inside. She'll let you know when she's comfortable. And start her off in the quieter rooms.
  15. Small point but these dogs are not in NE Vic.
  16. oh yeah, it's becoming a real mine field trying to breed a registered dog now. Plus some councils have mandatory desexing laws and often the only way around that is to be a member yourself and have your dog on an ANKC mains registry. Please make sure you get copies of all health testing done on parents and, depending on the breed, any health testing already done on the pups. And I mean something a bit more then the vet said they are all good to go. proper health testing usually means DNA testing where samples are sent away or specialist involved ie for hearing tests
  17. Ok, depends what your end goal is. If you would wish to show or have your puppies available to show homes your bitch, and any dog used over her, must be registered with the ANKC. It is the only recognised orginisation here in Aus. If you just want to breed for the sake of breeding then mdba would suit particularly if you are just breeding for colour/dollars. Sorry but you won't get much support for mdba from most breeders here who are, in the main, ANKC breeders.
  18. I would be getting a 2nd opinion. She may well have arthritis but I've never had a dog fall over from it. Were bloods done?
  19. not all breeders advertise on DOL. Does the breed have a state club? Or even a working dog club. Try asking Dogs NSW for a list of breeders. Otherwise all you can do is keep sending emails or brief phone calls saying you are still keen.
  20. no nearly 8 week old puppy weighs almost 80 pounds. Good try though.
  21. I wouldn't have been offended but we are all different and if it did bother me I would have told you so during the phone call. What does bother me is your assumption that the breeder prefers to sell the pup to someone who doesn't ask questions. You don't know that at all. Most breeders have had a puppy buyer that seemed great to only turn out not so great. You could have triggered something unknowningly and they decided not to take a chance on you and used the reference thing as their excuse. Maybe they are dodgy, maybe you are. No one here knows. Best just to move on and find another breeder and build a relationship.
  22. I think you are wrong to be wary. I think you would be more likely to get a healthy pup from a breeder who actually shows or whose dogs are shown. Find out what health problems can occur, find out what can be tested for, and find a breeder who is happy to show you all the paperwork for the parents health tests and possibly even the pups health testing. ( some breeds test puppies for deafness before selling them, for example) You also need to keep in mind that sh!t can happen no matter how careful everybody is. Go to some shows if you can, talk to some breeders, develop a relationship and be prepared to wait quite a while.
