  1. While I haven't debarked a dog I know dogs that have been done and they still remained the same. They don't seem to realise they are no longer making a large amount of noise and are happy to continue barking but a lot quieter. Most dogs still make some noise.
  2. In my experience they don't do half as much when you are not there as they do if you stay with them.
  3. easy fix is to just leave her to it out in the backyard while you are inside.
  4. @Tully I have had several people, both here in Aus and OS whose dogs have had this contact me. Most have recovered well, some did have some residual lameness and a couple have died or been PTS. If the lungs aren't affected then the chances are very good of recovering from what has been told to me. I just threw out the question on some FB pages including some for my breed.
  5. so sorry Tully you are having to go through this. It is now unlikely my girl has this. I still have no definite answers. Opal had a spinal tap last week and while initial testing pointed to several different things I am hoping further testing will pinpoint things down. As things stand she is still on her feet but very unstable. Appetite has never ceased. About to finish a course of the most expensive antibiotics ever! and has just started on massive dosages of pred. with Omeprazole to help prevent any ulcers forming in her gut. I have decided feeding raw chicken is not worth it so am now cooking it. I have one dog who won't eat red meat so cooked chook it is!
  6. I've nursed patients with Guillean-Barre and they have all come good, as in they were able to walk out of hospital not in a wheelchair. So I am trying to stay positive. Other options are disk problems but the vet is not confident about that. Just a waiting game at this stage and I don't play that game well.
  7. @JRG, how so paralysed? My dog is not there at this stage, just very wobbly on her feet.
  8. Has any one had a dog with acute polyradiculoneuritis APR ? If so how was it diagnosed or did you just stop feeding raw chicken? Any information gratefully received APR is now at the bottom of the list of possible problems
  9. Instead of going up how about going out? Piece of lattice or the Bunnings compost cage panels laid horizontal along the top of the side metal fence and resting onto the pool fencing. Not sure how to fix it to the metal fence, some sort of clamp maybe. Protruding into the yard by a couple of feet. Otherwise I like corrie's idea best. It would be more secure then something just attached to the top.
  10. how high is the shorter section? I wouldn't be rushing to add anything yet. Your pup is nearly 5 months old and just over a foot tall. He might not grow as much as you think.
  11. I've always believed it was on lead, forced exercise that should be restricted. Free play/exercise where the pup/young dog can stop when it's tired is fine.
  12. This thread is nearly 9 years old @Luke Roberts why bring it back up?
  13. Hi and welcome to DOL. Can you ask the breeder of your dog what they use? They would be the best ones to ask. Or you could google for Dachshund forums, join and ask them. I personally can't help as I have smooth coated dogs who only need a bath and a towel dry
  14. Do not send her away for training, no matter how desperate you are. Has she seen a vet? There are drugs that can help. Your dog can't learn anything when living in such a state of high arousal all the time and it can't be much fun for her. Where abouts are you? DOL members may be able to recommend someone you can see. I can't believe the behaviourists you have seen have not suggested medication, unless it is something you have forgotten to mention. Also you are not failing, personally I think the dogs first family failed by dumping her. 10 years of very bad behaviour may prove impossible to change. Is she biting your kids?
  15. Good luck sorting this mess out. The form shouldn't have been blank. It should have had the signature of the previous owner and also the barcode of the chip number. The vets are right, it should have been registered before being sold. Did you get registration papers for the pup?
  16. me either. In fact I would be insisting on it.
  17. I feed my dogs twice a day. Raw one meal, dry food the other. Don't stress too much about food. Most of it is a beat up. I give raw bones or whole carrots for teeth.
  18. so Messy is nearly 4, walks nice on lead but no one has ever tried to pat him before? He is a cattle dog, a working breed. What I recall about cattle dogs are they are not keen on strangers approaching them. Messy obviously found this a bit much so next time someone asks to pat the dog just say no. It is your job to protect the dog. Not all dogs are social butterflies nor should they have to be. In fact I like the sound of your dog, happy to walk with you and take no notice of others. You idea of properly socialised most likely differs from mine. Maybe you could start some training at home with him, or go to a local obedience club, they are usually not too expensive.

    Bloodhound

Hi, I don't own a bloodhound but research is showing the later the better for desexing particularly for a large/giant breed. If you can cope with your girl having a season then I would hold off until after that. If you ask your breeder then they may be able to give you a rough idea of when their bloodlines have their first season. Though there is always one that doesn't follow the rules My youngest bitch came in 4 months before what is common for her lines. @MattB
  20. I bought the ebay one. When I get around to using it I have no intention of pulling things apart etc. I'll rinse it out and turn it upside down to drain.
  21. You haven't seen my dogs feet and legs!
