  1. Newsagents in our area just cut off the masthead to claim their returns so newspapers are bundled up for recycling and are given willingly to those asking for it. As we don't get any papers had a friend save them for us too!! yep that's how I get my newspapers, other bedding on top
  2. they make press stud guns?? oh how I hated having to sew press studs on stuff when I was younger. I have avoided them like the plague for the longest time. Might have to get me a gun now
  3. it is not off topic as this thread is about rewarding good behaviour by both dog and owner and the thread was started in Oct so your dog was hardly much younger and peed on at least 3 different people. Nope. But I'm not going to argue with you anymore, it's obviously pointless and I don't even know who you are or care what you think about me or my dog. It is completely OT - re-read the OP if you need to. I'll help you. This thread is about whether you think there should be incentives for responsible owners, and what those incentives should be - and of course how the whole process should/could be implemented. If you would like to talk about something else, or just attack particular members (which btw in case you were wondering, I feel you are currently doing to me), feel free, but don't do in this thread - you're ruining any chance we have of having a constructive discussion about what I (and obviously many other members) believe is a very important issue. If what you're interested in is instead me and my dog (reflected by your last x posts), just PM me. exactly! responsible dog owners Exactly - do you think they should be rewarded? Who cares whether you think I'm responsible or not, you don't know me, you don't know my dog and I don't know that you're the best person to be assessing us. But how do you think it should be assessed? And by who? I suggested something along the lines of a new title that was awarded on the grounds of your dog passing a basic obedience test and then also a social reaction test - ie do they react negatively to other dogs, people etc. What do they do when you sit down at a table? Ideally you'd want a dog that stays at your side, doesn't react and lays down when you sit down. And of course trained to toilet on command. Once you passed I think you should be allowed to have your dog with you under more circumstances. I think this would be a good incentive for all dog owners, but I also think it would be great for society on the whole to see more dogs out and about not causing problems (not just guide dogs). As is it now, most people seem to think you're the exception if you have the well-trained dog. I would like this to change, and for the people with poorly behaved unsocialised dogs to be the exception. What do you think? I think is is discrimination pure and simple. And only a short step to excluding all dogs who don't have the magical card to being banned from being out in public, to, in the extreme, being put down cause they don't have the card. Plenty of DINOS would sit quietly at a cafe table or walk around the street, if the owners of the friendly dog who justs wants to say hi would keep the bloody things under control.

  6. Yes and there are some people you will never convince - alone though we will never make any changes and the public will continue to hold the opinions they currently do of the place of dogs in society, how to raise them and what to expect from them. I think some people are missing a point here. Through an incentives program people could see the advantages of proper dog ownership - and realise that having a dog that is poorly behaved and can't be taken out is the fault almost always of the owner. But if instead of talking about that and how to achieve the goals we all have for our dogs and dogs in general, people would prefer to make sarcastic remarks and shut people down - well, it's hard to have hope isn't it. you're a fine one to talk when you have a dog that goes around pissing on people
  7. Don't flatter yourself, you are nowhere near as important to others as you are to yourself
  8. I can see it now, a lovely fenced dog park, paid for by the government but used only by a few select card carrying members of the public overseen by a paid employee. But OMG, Gasp, Horror, one of the friendly dogs gets jumped on by another friendly dog and doesn't appreciate it and growls to tell the other dog it was out of line Oh the shame, the suitable owner now becomes unsuitable and their card is taken from them, they are in disgrace, their dog has obviously not had enough training or socialisation but they somehow got a card, how embarrassing Maybe the suitable dog owners would have to wear a big yellow tick or something on their clothing to make sure they were easily identifiable from a distance so all the non suitable owners could marvel at their superior dog training skills.
  9. So non suitable owners and their dogs stay away but have to pay for it via the government. Greytmates suggestion was better. You pay.
  10. Heat pad in one corner of the box. Have a read in the breeders forum.
  11. just had a thought. I wonder how many pets are stolen for ransom? The locals know how loved this dog is. The reward would have been sizable. Makes my skin crawl, doesn't bare thinking about
  12. agree, they are not cute and cuddly nor are they popular. Add greyhound to staffy's and staghounds you get pig dogs. Someone had already asked to use him over their deerhounds If they were trying to on sell puppies for Christmas I can't see a half grown pup being a good choice. I would like to think he might have ended up as a pet but it would have been highly unlikely. Thankfully his Mum saved him from God knows what.
  13. Why? if the council did their jobs and cracked down on the loose dogs it shouldn't matter if your dog was a DINO. If people followed the leash laws there is technically no need for a recall. There is no reason a DINO dog can't be out and about and be just a good a dog as one that is happy for every dog to get in it's face. Why should a DINO dog not be allowed to sit quietly at a cafe? Um. What does DINO stand for? Sorry, never heard that term. This has nothing to do with lose dogs. It's about creating off leash areas were dogs can safetly mingle knowing others are under control and of good temperament. Trust me, I am aginst introducing further restrictions on pet ownership. I was thinking more in terms of a rewards club, not new laws to govern old areas. DINOS, sorry I forgot the S, is Dogs In Need Of Space. You know the dogs that don't appreciate, for whatever reason other dogs in their face. Much like I don't appreciate another person standing toe to toe with me. So has everything to do with loose dogs and moronic owners that think it is cute to allow their dogs to run up to all and sundry. Off leash area's, oh yeah, have some here, same moronic owners still allow their dogs to invade other peoples/dogs space even though the signs clearly state must be under effective control. DINOS
  14. It's not always easy to predict when your girl will come into season and then whelp. My last litter the bitch came into season a month early so any holidays booked would have been mucked up. Then I waited as long as I could before applying for holidays to make sure she was in whelp cause if she wasn't I would have bred her again the next season and I wouldn't have wanted to waste my holidays. An easy way to measure her is stand her next to something and mark the object at the height of her withers. It might be out a smidge but could give you a more accurate height then trying to measure a bouncy teenager. :D

  16. What would be the restriction in this case? I'm talking about the creation of new venues not restrictions on old ones. the restrictions would be on good dogs and their owners who don't, for whatever reason, comply with the extra's needed to be granted these extra privledges. IE greyhounds are not allowed off lead in public in Victoria. Bit hard to train and then prove they have a good recall not to mention it would usually take them months and months longer then say a GSD to learn it. ( I have owned both breeds ) and yet the vast majority of greyhounds seem to be born sensible. I could take my nearly 6 month old pup up the street and he would be much better behaved then some of my Shepherd's would have been at the same age. Yet the Sheppie's would have had much more training. Many a time I had a greyhound up the street having a coffee and they just lay down on their blanket under the table with minimum of fuss. But I would no longer be able to do that under your proposal as I wouldn't have a piece of paper saying they were well behaved enough to do so. My friend and I educated many, many people in my country town over the past 10 years about greyhounds. Would have been a bit hard to do so if we hadn't had the dogs laying quietly at our feet.
  17. must admit that was my thought too. I would prefer councils actually reinforced the laws they have now.
  18. second vet opinion. 6 weeks of illness is too long.
  19. a vaccination is a vaccination. Send the pup down and the new owner and their vet can work out what they want. Though I would be stressing the importance of getting pup out and about well before 16 weeks.
  20. I'm a nurse who works permament night shift. You do the things you have to do if you really have the breed at heart.
  21. snip a bit of hair off on one of their backsides
  22. One of the pups from my recent litter was stolen from his Mum's home in the early hours of this morning. Two teenage? boys broke into the backyard ( padlocked gate ) and then broke into the run ( padlocked gate ). Luckily his Mum ran them down and they dropped the dog and ran off. Carrying a struggling, nearly 6 month old, greyhound pup is not easy. Thank God. Mum and pup both ok, Mum very shaken. Police have been involved and it turns out there have been several dog/pups stolen recently from around the Yarrawonga area, couple of staffy's were taken and an attempt was made on a litter of stag hounds in a nearby country town. Be aware please. Police line was maybe they were stolen to be sold on as Christmas gifts, I'm afraid my thoughts are darker then that. fixed spelling!
  23. my experience was the same. I made them narrower by cutting them in half lengthwise and then making them much shorter as well, no wrapping them around and around themselves.
  24. Hope Coco heals quickly and then all will be well
