  1. and some that do are rife with politics so some breeders wouldn't touch them with a barge pole and that does not make them bad breeders.
  2. Change it to whatever you want. It doesn't have to sound similar. She will soon learn her new name especially if you give her a little treat or a game every time you say it for a couple of days.
  3. I've owned 7 female dogs, 4 purebred GSD's, 1 cross GSD, 1 mutt and 1 greyhound I have owned 4 male dogs - all greyhounds.
  4. I must admit I would just cut it off but if you can't do it a vet trip is in order. It can't be left like that.
  5. why did you medicate ( sedate? ) a pup going to Hawaii? I've sent two and they arrived in fine spirits, no sedation.
  6. My dogs must be broken. I can leave their meat out defrosting on top of the stove, well within their reach and it's never been touched. Same with the cat food, they could get it if they really wanted too. Margarine sits on the bench top most of the year. I think the kitchen bin has been raided 3 times in 20 years. I am and have been very aware of what I leave out though so there has never been much of a reward for them. They would nick a sandwich off my plate if left unattended in the lounge room while I make a cuppa :D eta spelling
  7. Really, at an indoor show at KCC park in June, with no real shelter outside, I would leave your dog at home. Then the whole family is free to chat to the showies/breeders and relax and enjoy the show. No stress for the people and none for the dog. Just my opinion.
  8. My show dogs are my pets and yes all dogs are different.
  9. for the large breeds I would like extra height, my sides are 600 mm. Does make it easier to keep warm in winter, but the reverse is true as well. I woudn't pay for heating, easy enough to have your own. Colour choice would be nice but not essential. Yes a textured floor and maybe a little way up the sides. I have a hinged door but either would be fine. I also didn't use pig rails but holes in a couple of different heights would be handy for those who want them, you could shove a broom handle or similar through. A plug in the bottom for ease of washing it out. A couple of brackets or similar so you could attach lights, heating etc easily. Might be a bit fiddley to make though. Could you make one without a bottom? Could you make just sides and a bottom if wanted that could be easily fitted together then taken apart for storing? For large breeds the storing is such a pain.
  10. it's not the collar choking her, she is doing it to herself. You need to do a bit more training with her. At 14 weeks old she is likely to pull and choke herself on most collars. In saying that my youngest boy did do much better on the lead he was trained on, when I switched it to, IMO a kinder one, that he finally fitted into, he choked himself silly. If people are saying try a different collar ask to borrow one and see how she goes before buying one.
  11. Hahah I was waiting for something like this thank you!!!..... I think show dogs should be one of the most socialised, and I have been to 5 shows and I’m pretty disappointed with the behaviour of some/most of the dogs I have to say, it’s nearly impossible to walk any dog past another without barking or snarling..... I think the point of a show dog is to represent the best of the breed... biting when not threatened should not be a part of that display... I believe they are suppose to be approachable, by dog and human... not just the judge in the ring. And sorry if i have offended anyone but this has been my personal observation in the few shows I have been to since taking an interest in showing. Dogs are dogs and your expectations are way too high. Dogs are not meant to mingle with hundreds of other dogs that are not part of their pack. They do it because we, their people, ask it of them. Different breeds have vastly different temperaments. You can not ask that they all be generic. To do so would turn them into something else. Dogs have bad days and good days, some like more space then others etc. Dog shows are stressful places for most dogs. The vast majority you see there, whatever the behaviour they exhibited, are great pets at home, able to be walked out and about without a single problem. You put 500 odd people in a smallish area, define their space etc and you can bet there will be snarling and carrying on. why do you expect so much more of dogs?
  12. If a dog bit me and it was at fault, I wouldn't tell anyone. I couldn't live with myself if a beautiful animal had to be put down because of my stupidity. You take your dog out in public, if you have not worked out human nature by now you need to look at yourself not everyone else. I wont encroach on someones personal space, I wont go near a dog in a cage, but if a dog is out in the open unattended and I can read the body language positively.............well, if you don't like it, stay home. you mightn't tell but someone else might so the dog still pays for your stupidity ( your words ). Dogs are behind barriers at the Melb Royal so not left out in the open and you are indeed encroaching on some ones personal space. There is no where else to leave our gear and personal belongings. Public are told not to go behind the barriers. But you keep doing it because you know so much better then anyone else and when you are patting a dog you shouldn't be and the person next door discovers some lowlife has pinched their purse and you are right there, well enjoy that experience too. :D
  13. has a series of video's which I find very good.
  14. don't believe everything you hear. At the recent Sydney Royal I was told two "facts". Which dog was going to win a particular group and which dog was going to win Best in Show. The one for group was shortlisted but not placed let alone win. The BIS winning dog didn't even win it's group. Every time I have been told such and such a dog will win, it hasn't. The gossip has been wrong every time. I'm sure there are times the gossip is right but I have yet to hear/see it. Which is different to having a good guess on who will win a class etc, usually those people have the best dogs so yes they often win but it is not always a given.
  15. Mine were all happy. They also wore a coat. My main bed was under the table against a wall. I could have enclosed a couple of sides but they were fine. Hmmm.. maybe I'll have to get him some doggy pj's or something just to make sure he's snug enough as it will be a bit of shock going from snuggling under my quilt with me to being on his own on a bed with no cover. I know he'll adapt and get used to it but I'm being the over protective owner until then. if he is going to be crated you can throw a couple of blankets over the top to make it snug.

  17. I think it is polite to wait until someone is around before touching their dog. I would suggest dont leave your dog unnatended if you are that concerend about your dog. The Royal Show is (or was) a pretty open area with the dogs sitting about 2 feet from the public walkway As I show at the Melbourne Royal I know the set up very well. Unfortunately I do have to attend the ladies from time to time and if the person I asked to watch my dog is distracted, like untangling another dog caught up in the tether, it does mean my dog is left exposed to people like you who have the hide to think it is a petting zoo and you can do what you like. Extremely rude behaviour.
  18. I have ones very similar to this and they work very well. They don't feel that warm to touch but the animals all wanted to sleep on them. When I kicked the younger ones off so the oldies could get on the warm area was plenty warm enough.

  20. I have greyhounds and they sleep outside at night with just two coats on in their kennel when I work. The nights I am home they sleep inside but no heating pads. Does your dog really need a heating pad or is it for your peace of mind? I do have a couple of heated beds but they were for the old dog and cat. They won't be used this year for my young/ish healthy pets.
  21. Her cycle could be perfectly normal for her. I start my prog testing at day 2 and go every 2nd day until told otherwise/the timing is right. I would always prog test anyway unless the stud dog was living on the property.
  22. I never said it should be up to the committee - I suggested a sub-contractor/private operator to offer the service to first come first served at the bigger grounds on particular days! but how would a private operator even know such a service could be offered unless someone contacts them first? :) Either yourself or another parent needs to suss out the ins and outs of such an idea and present it to the VCA and get their take on it all, then if you are given the ok, you would take it from there. Otherwise it does become just another job that is expected for a show committee to organise. Personally I like Haredown Whippets suggestion.
  23. you are asking this 2 years after the event
  24. You do realise that some things like HD can show no obvious signs and the dog can be shown and titled before being x-rayed and the HD discovered? The same with some of the eye conditions? That in most catalogues the parentage of the dogs is displayed? It's what the person does after they discover their dog has a serious fault that counts IMO.
