  1. My pure bred GSD's never got past 12, the cross bred got to 13, so in my eyes 10 is old. Same for the greyhounds, never had one past 12. I have had a smaller cross bred dog who lived to 15, 2 cats who lived to 15 and 18.
  2. agree, 10 is old for a larger breed dog. We often don't see it ourselves. At some stage of each of my dogs lives I have always gotten a surprise, usually when seeing the latest photo, at the fact they have got old. When did it happen? How did it happen? Why didn't I see it before this? I know the answers in my head but in my heart - no.
  3. feed bread to her, the theory is it wraps around the chicken bones and cushions them as they move out. I have read of milk soaked cotton balls being fed to a dog who munched on some Christmas decorations once.
  4. Do you mind if i ask what you think the correct amount of food should be for a 6 month lab with this issue, Ive been giving him some lamb flanks/chicken necks as well as a cup of advance morning and night as well. Thanks I find lamb flanks very fattening, I give them to dogs to put weight on. Maybe feed some vegies with his dry food to make him think he is getting heaps, or put the dry food in a kong or similar and pop them both in a crate so he has to work for his food but is restricted on how far he can move it around?
  5. Given a judge spends a minute or two with each dog at best, how is temperament assessed. How do you assess 'disciplined gameness' in a kerry blue terrier or in the case of a wheaten terrier if the dog is 'good-tempered, spirited and game, full of confidence and humour, a delightful, affectionate and intelligent companion' in a minute or two? I've never seen a wheaten in a ring do the 'wheaten greetin' at a judge. I suggest that the show ring cannot assess temperament. I think it can assess alertness, hence toys being thrown around a ring to see if a dog looks at it immediately, but affection or gameness? It would be interesting to hear from some judges on this. you could weed out some of the dogs, the ones the judges can't get their hands on, the ones that pee themselves at the approach of the judge.
  6. "Brandon Verna, a friend of Mr Stankiewicz, told The Local East Village the dog had a history of being overprotective. "Most of us figured out that when he’s passed out, whether he’s overdosing or not, leave him alone," Mr Verna said. "If he’s going to die, call an ambulance and have them deal with it because no one wants to get bitten." " yep leave it to the people trying to help him to get bitten.
  7. Temperament is part and parcel of conformation. I will not breed from a dog with a dodgy temperament.
  8. Definitely 6 weeks old is far too young to leave home, any caring breeder would hold onto the pup until at least 8-9 weeks but why is there a problem with breeding for colour as long as other things are taken into consideration and the breeding stock is health checked? Perhaps I am missing something but my understanding is that breeders are all trying to breed to the standard and that often includes the colour of the dog as well ??? a lot of blue breeders are only breeding for colour, nothing else. They are never shown, often not health tested, it is just one blue breeding after the next, and all the dogs usually have the same prefix, there is never an outside dog used. Do a search, you will find lots on this topic particularly in the health forum.
  9. Youngest you can vaccinate a pup is six weeks. Then they are supposed to stay with the breeder long enough for the vac. to actually kick in.
  10. I don't like them because they are not natural and the dog never has a chance to attend to her own cleaning and they block air flow, which could create the smell you describe. All I have ever done with my girls is throw extra bedding on the couches etc and I use several polar fleece blankets on my bed. They are easily washed. Carpets are fairly easily cleaned. I'd crate a bitch before I would put pants on her. Then a quick wipe when let out. It is only blood after all and it doesn't faze me.
  11. I don't see why it would be a problem. As you said the laundry is too small for all of them, they will only be apart while sleeping. Put a crate in your daughter's room and let them enjoy! At one stage I had a dog who was not allowed to sleep in the house overnight ( long story ) but the others were. There was never a problem in the pack. In fact all my dogs have and can sleep inside or out, in a crate or not, with others or by themselves. You never quite know what curveball life will throw at you and it's good the dogs can be adaptable.
  12. has she been evaluated by someone experienced in the breed to see how well she meets the standard? Have you asked her breeder what they think about her quality and also about her weight issues? Has she had what ever relevent health tests are needed? are you prepared for the costs? what if she needs a c-section, what if she dies? It does happen. I wouldn't worry about whether she likes puppies or not, that has little bearing on how she would react to her own. As for not liking being in season, well that's a bit subjective. I don't use pants on my girl, I don't like them. I think you need to be happy with whatever the answers are to my questions, then and only then, go ahead and breed her. If you don't like the answers you come up with then spay her.
  13. anybody with a computer and using google can find you, that's what happens when you have a website, in fact that is usually the purpose of having a website.
  14. My goal is to have healthy happy dogs who are a pleasure to be around. Titles etc all come after that.
  15. yes just SUP doesn't seem right I agree with that part of your post. But......... you didn't have to apply for it. No one made you. It's not just bush people going to the city, are the people in N.T. expected to fly to Adelaide or Sydney to make sure all their groups are 25 pointers? Why let it bother you about what size the BIG is or that some people tried to claim their dog as being the first? You said you were proud of your award, ( I am sure you meant the dog's award ) but now the glitz has been taken away. The only thing taking away the glitz is your attitude.
  16. On Friday 10th August Warrior got the last points needed for his Australian Champion title (pending). My boy did it in style, being one of only 3 run off for group and being Junior in Group! Many thanks to the judge Mr M. Curk (NSW) who recognised Warriors wonderful qualities. Minbeemedia took some fantastic pics of Warrior and his Mum Fern over the weekend. I look forward to sharing some here on the show forum once received. :D

  19. I am so sad to read this. Thank you efowler for being with Ned at the Ned at the end. Ned's original owners have a lot to answer for, spineless, gutless bars people who I hope never get another pet in their lives.
  20. you can do them yourself or get a breeder friend to do them. I have done both.
