  1. My daughter's grey copes well as an only dog and she works 5 days a week. Certainly try the places suggested, she might have to wait a while for the right dog but it will be worth it!
  2. I am all for minimal chemicals in dogs but heartworm is the one preventive I use. I have smooth coated dogs who are often outside at dusk and dawn due to my working night shift.
  3. dog next door had it several years ago, the owners missed a dose or two cause of a death in the family. There was also one bought from the pound about 20 years ago when heartworm was first being noticed in the town I live in.
  4. crossing my fingers the kids, the cat and the dogs all come through ok
  5. From what I have been told you apply for any house you like except for the ones that state No Pets, on the off chance they will allow you to have a pet. BUT you must tell them your intentions on getting a dog upfront. My daughter and her partner have a large dog and two inside cats and have been renting in Melb for several years now.
  6. there's always strings attatched with PR. You need to read the whole thread...every page. yep I've read it
  7. not enough greyhounds in Victoria for you to "save" then. Yeah I have a problem with it and have said so in the past so you are not being singled out.
  8. no it's not if you have a good kennel and, if needed, a good dog coat. You might not sell to anyone who has their dog out at night but that's a different story all together.
  9. heartworm(only) every 6 weeks, intestinal worms 2 or 3 times a year, no flea treatment unless I see one, no further vaccinations (only C3) after the booster shot at 15 months, unless required for boarding.
  10. Did your breeder stipulate a "best time" or age desexing had to be done by? Best to go back and talk to the breeder.
  11. Well done! Henry is one lucky pup to have you and yours as his family. Here's to a long and happy life together
  12. yes, the 25 points after 12 months is no longer required. Is it still required for neuter dogs?
  13. you seem to be the only one who has inside info donatella, everybody else can only go by what is posted, which is true for 99% of threads on DOL. People can only respond to what is posted.
  14. Hasn't answered mine either. I won't be holding my breath waiting for an answer.
  15. pet grade has perservatives etc added to it. Where I live it used be from downed cows etc that the pet shop owner himself went out and shot. No idea what happens now but I would never feed pet grade to my animals.
  16. Thing to watch out for is that the numbers are not wholly accurate. In the stats link for the year 2000 they have 183 greyhounds down as being registered, yet in the ANKC data base they only have 57, where did the rest go? I query the 2010 figures as well but my copy of the data base only goes up to 2009.
  17. http://www.murrumbatemancountryinn.com.au/ try here, decent rooms, good food, dogs stayed in the trailer, about 25 minutes from Canberra
  18. Its in the foster hand out on a rescues site Well no way to prove it I guess well I can dig out the humane training certificates I have buried around here somewhere. I could give you the name and number to all the places I worked as references but thats a lot of work to prove to one person on the internet what I have accomplished in my life. No the rescue was an all breed rescue specializing in working dogs ACDs BCs were what mostly came in. Thats what we were thinking of doing I only asked if we should do the non profit for advice in case someone had a really good reason to go that route. So why is it your ok with a private rescue but not a charity rescue? I certainly hope its not about money because rescuing isnt a business adventure for me, and most of the time its your own money going into the dogs. Your certificates are of no interest to me. Greyhounds are not bull breeds or working dogs/mixes. So how many greyhounds have you owned? ETA rephrase, how many greyhounds have you had in your home
  19. seems to have been missed by the OP. lack of foster carers is what increases waiting lists. Concerns me too.
  20. The other group in Vic is GSN, Greyhound Safety Net and I actually do find it offensive that they have been mentioned several times by name but you just refer to them as the other rescue.
  21. Yes I know, but usually when people sign a contract they try to stick to it. I am not sure why my asking people to do this equates to me not being a good rescue, I can tell you really really don't want us to do this I just cant understand why. Why are we so bad? Why are we not capable of running a good rescue and helping dogs. Do you give all new rescues this much trouble or just greyhound ones? I have been involved in dogs since I Was 15 and volunteering at a vet, I spent all my adult life working for vets, going to school to be a vet tech, working at shelters and humane societies, running rescues. I think maybe its just you dont understand how dedicated I am to helping animals its not a hobby for me its a passion. You need to read what I actually wrote and not imagine things. There are plenty of things for you to think about that you don't seem to have considered very well. Least of which is how your group is going to fill a different need to the others. Gap victoria do have a handle on what the laws are. They have been around longer than some of the laws that apply to organizations that sell dogs and have worked hard to successfully lobby for laws to improve to help greyhound adoption. If you are so dedicated and passionate about doing this well you shouldnt be taking such offence at people who are giving you good advice. I am not taking offense per say but all I am getting from your posts are dont do it your not good enough just foster for GAP or the other rescue. I have stated my plans and I dont think they are bad. I stated that we will be talking to the right people to make sure all the laws are being followed. I stated that there is a need in my eyes the need is to take the dogs that the other rescues cant take in due to space and that are dying, to me that is a need maybe not to others but I see it as a need good dogs dying because there isnt enough room You said I wasnt dog savvy yet I have outlined most of what I have done in my adult life with dogs which is a ton. I must have to go back and read your posts because what I have taken from your posts are not to do it and to foster which I posted why I wont. I have gotten good advice in this thread from others but your posts are not coming across as advice but rather picking at why we shoudl just forget the idea and go with fostering. That was me not Greytmate. And you didn't say anything at the beginning at all of your "experience" which, and I am not trying to be rude, but none of us know whether it is true or not. And other people have joined up here and came out all guns blazing claiming all sorts of things which turned out to be not true. Not just in the rescue forum either. To me you seem very inexperienced with sighthounds in general, greyhounds in particular. Sure you can learn but most people have to crawl before they walk, walk before they run. All your experience seems to be with bull breeds. It's why I think you should foster before anything else. Or do private adoptions. I knew someone who would get one greyhound at a time, do all the vet work and then find the right home for it. Funded privately by herself. I don't know anything about getting the various charity numbers etc but I can't imagine you get them for just you and hubby taking greyhounds from one trainer.
  22. Are you planning taking your greyhound to GAP promotions? Cause I am not sure what other activities you mean? If you are then I suggest you make contact with GAP because I doubt you will be allowed. They can't allow an unknown dog to be put forward as part of a GAP event. If something was to go wrong, well it doesn't bear thinking about. If you are talking about some of the private walks sometimes advertised on GAP's website, that is different. Anyone can join them.
  23. Maybe it's all the hard work other people have done over the last 15 or so years. The meet and greets while having coffee up the street, the yearly displays done at the local agi shows, the ads - radio, print and TV, the owners of adopted greys handing out business cards for GAP and GSN, talking the ear off anyone who stood still, the regular walks organised. Lots and lots of effort put in by lots and lots of greyhound people. Maybe thats right, so why is it harmful for more people to educate down here. I love talking dogs with people I dont understand this post to be honest You don't understand it?? You said people aren't scared to pat your greyhound, I replied that maybe it's because etc etc. In other words so many people have spent so much effort over quite a few years educating people about greyhounds that a lot of people nowadays know a lot more about greyhounds.
