The puppy I bought (from a reg breeder) was like that and he turned out to have a very difficult temperament (not motivated by anything, never that keen on human interaction). So I would say don't buy a puppy like that. hopefully she'll have more luck with another breeder

well maybe she's learnt that she should listen to you now pers It is a sad situation

A Bit Confused About What To Do With Nelson
raineth replied to redial's topic in General Dog Discussion
You are truly good person farewell Nelson -
thanks

Well that is a surprise! If you are thinking it may be from a less than ideal source, then at times like that I take a deep breath and remind myself that while it wouldn't be my choice people have the right to obtain a pet in the manner they see fit
-
That's exactly what it's doing and why I think it's so clever. How easy is it to meet someone who owns an entire dog and instead of getting on a rant and tell them to cut their dog's balls off you can just throw in - Hey have you seen the Katherine Heigl hates balls ad. This is gonna be my next pick up line :D except I don't know how to pronounce her last name!

hmmm so I'm reading: friendly and tolerant not very active is naturally biddable (or not going to take advantage) what about one of the hounds? fauve, Beagle, PBGV, whippet?

You might be right (damn shame none of the Dol menfolk are giving their perceptions on it for a bit of insight) but maybe what it's really targeting is women dog owners. It's a much better approach than the peta style campaigns with graphic images trying to shock people into neutering their pets. yeah I guess I see it as really making fun of, and undermining, that sort of 'culture'. Individual attitudes will change with the culture change
-
I could be wrong, but I thought as long as you treated the pets for a couple of months then there is no need to treat the bedding because the fleas can't complete their life cycle without a host.

Yeah but women don't like identify themselves through their breasts (or at least I don't lol). not sure if I'm reading this right but it kinda souonds like you're saying that Men's testes are a major part of their identity? Not for all men, but they talk about them a lot. Like if someone seems hesitant to do something hard, they tell him to grow a pair (of balls). If someone does something brave and confrontational, they say, wow they have balls of steel, or he's got balls etc. You get the idea. I have not heard anyone talk about breasts the same way - they aren't seen to affect personality. as you say not all men are like that... But I think the add does a good job at targeting those whose identity is closely tied to their balls (those who subscribe to hegemonic masculinity).

There was a lot of dogs from the Gundog group[ I could have put. I was tossing up between Lab and Golden, but in the end I chose Lab because they need less brushing

Congratulations! They are very beautiful Can't wait to see them running around with buckets on their heads one day

I agree, whilst it was funny, and it was entertaining - it didn't seem to address the real issues as to why desexing your dog is important. It did appear to just focus on the unattractiveness of the 'balls'. This angle has the potential to work - the amount of people who hang on to the words of celebrities because it's 'fashionable'. However the repercussions may indeed be that people stupidly thinking it's ok to 'chop off' any other perceivable 'ugly' part. Katherine Heigl cracks me up though. She's great a keeping a straight face throughout! I wonder how many takes it took to shoot this piece perfectly But I think its target audience would just switch off if you told them those things. I think it works at the level of the average pet owner

Yeah I found those suggestions just don't really fit in with the real world. Obviously socialisation is very important; I don't think there is some miracle quality about 100. Some people don't interact well with dogs/puppies so it wouldn't make sense to introduce the puppy to these people just to make your 100 quota. Same with other dogs. If you know only two other dogs that interact well with puppies then it is better for the pup to only interact with those two dogs than to interact with dogs that don't have the proper social skills. Your puppy can learn to just be in close proximity with these other dogs without meeting. So much depends on the disposition of the puppy. You have to be careful with a timid puppy to build his confidence and take the socialisation slowly. With very excitable pups you have to be careful they don't learn bad habits in the way they interact with others. For instance you would wait for them to calm before letting them say hello. So as others said (and as your are doing) take what you think is valid from the Ian Dunbar. You could always look at others sources as well. Probably the most useful resource to you will be a skilled local trainer or training club,as they can actually see you and your dog But I do think it is good to have read some info before your puppy arrives as it can give you guidance and maybe prevent you making certain mistakes

where I live there is an assistance dog who has had to go back into training because it has been rushed at, and even attacked, by offlead dogs and onlead dogs, and has now become reactive I don't have a DINO, but there is one lady with her incredibly rude stafford who makes a bee-line for us on walks to let her dog jump all over my dogs. It doesn't amaze me that she doesn't understand that her dog is being rude; but it does amaze me that she fails to notice my polite yet increasingly less subtle body language and conversation that told her I didn't want her dog to say hello to mine

I don't think humping is always a problem. Sometimes I think humping is more distressing for the humans than for the dogs! Although i wouldn't think it wise to go around letting your dog hump other dogs at will either. My desexed bitch encourages certain male dogs to hump her; so evidently she doesn't see it as a problem. My male puppy used to hump a giant-sized plush Nemo toy. I certainly don't think that this was a problem. And i don't think it stemmed from a desire to dominate an inanimate object.

oh what lovely photos! I think my two ultimate favourites are the one of the two dogues under that pretty plant. They just look so much like a couple! And the Herd of Dogue puppies :D
-
Personally I don't like the use of a command. You want the dog to always take a treat gently, not just when you tell them to be But otherwise my method is similar to the above... hold the treat in your hand and the puppy only gets it when I feel tongue and not teeth.
-
sort of along the same lines as what Huski has written, you need to discuss these things and come to agreement with the other people in the household. For starters I think the most important thing may be to be in agreement about how you will achieve bite inhibition As depending on the puppy, that is sometimes the first thing they'll do

A bernese Mountain dog? or a deerhound? I think Aussie shepherd is also a good suggestion what sort of temperament appeals to you? Do you still want the lab-type temperament? Maybe you could look at some of the other gundogs if you do?
