Lasareina was making the point that just because you own a byb dog, doesn't mean you are a bad owner. I think most people would agree with that. I know quite a few people with pet shop dogs or byb dogs etc. and their dogs are really well looked after, valued members of their household. They look after their dogs in the way that any ethical dog breeder would want a puppy of theirs to be looked after.

Confused As To What To Do Next?
raineth replied to julesluvscavs's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Oh I'm so sorry Jules I know from the things you write how incredibly precious your dogs are to you, and I'm so sorry for your loss. I know Joey was blessed to have you as his owner and that you and your OH gave him so much happiness. -
As a dog owner I agree with you.

Is it possible he had eaten something that you're allergic to and that was what you were reacting to?

This is very sad. Again I feel like its a matter of people not knowing that people do in fact have a right to get to your front door. I know a couple of people I'd mentioned this too, didn't know it. While dog owners should make it there responsibility to know and abide by laws regarding their dogs, I can't help but feel that an education campaign would be useful to remind people of the laws that apply to them as pet owners.

I get this with my old boy, people thinking he's a pitbull....He looks nothing like a pitbull!! Yep! I think Pitbulls are a bit of mystery to many people (in terms of what they actually look like) and they just think anything that's not fluffy, is brindle or is muscled might be a Pitbull. My guy is quite muscled at the moment so I think that's what did it in this instance. I don't expect people to recognise what different breeds, but I reserve the right to have a chuckle at it some of their suggestions! here's a photo of mr Digby

Well just five minutes ago I was asked by a cyclist if my 60kg mutt was a Pit-bull. Then a car pulled up and asked me what breed he was and when I answered 'he's a mutt' they got such looks of confusion on their faces that I had to explain what a mutt was. However I also got a comment from a lady about how lovely and shiny he was which made me :D ETA: not that these really class as frustrating though!

Glad to hear her operation went well. I think the IV fluids is always a good idea :) -

Typical boy! haha! But in reality that is a really good sign! As some dogs are so stressed at being alone that they would not even be distracted by something like a bone. -

I think if he has never really been home alone before (without Juno) and you don't know whether he'd be cool with that, then it is a good idea not to jump in the deep end with a whole day by himself. It is always better to take action to prevent a problem than to fix one! Definitely start with little baby steps on a program where both dogs get used to being alone. Just make it part of your routine and start with a period of time that you know they'll be ok with... Even if it's just one minute! You can build up from there :) ETA: oh and you can make it a bit predictable for him. So each time you do it, you might say "Ok Hunter, time for some alone time" and take him out the back. You may want to give him a chew. Then no fuss just go back inside. Don't make it dramatic or complicated or anything, just matter of fact. -

Good luck with the Operation today :) The bolded bit: do you mean you are just worried he'd be a bit lonely, or do you think he would actually get quite stressed? If you think, or know, he would get quite stressed, I would gently advise you to work on it. It's not really healthy for dogs to not be able to cope without their other doggie partner. For times exactly like today, where one will be at the vet, you need the other to be able to cope :) Dogs like this also suffer badly if the other one passes away. I would recommend that you start with short periods of time where he is separate from Juno. Just a few minutes with a nice chew maybe. Then as he gains confidence build it up to longer amounts of time :) My two regularly spend about half a day separate from each other. And I rarely take both of them out together, as I want them to learn and know that everything is still ok, even if they're on their own :) -
That's terrible. I had a similar situation with an old boyfriend who told me I was only allowed to have 3 dogs and they were not allowed inside. I had 5 dogs at the time. Guess who got dumped? Hint: It wasn't my dogs. Good move MUP You don't want someone who thinks its ok to dictate to you anyway :)

Oh I popped in to see how he was doing, but he's gone. I'm very sorry for your loss Wuffles and Nina too I love those photos, what a grand old man he was.

well I don't know if its really doing that. It did say that adoptions had increased by 1.4% which is a very small amount and could be down to anything really. I agree that it is a shame that the term 'mutt' has become a dirty word. I personally think it's one of the reasons that so many people with a mixed breed dog refer to it as a breed name and why others get caught up in the oodle phenomena. My mutt gets called a mutt when people ask me, and their reaction is one of such frustration... "but what breed is he?" they ask me... people have forgotten what the word mutt actually means.
-
Oh that didn't come across that way to me, I do prefer that idea. I really thought they were marketing each one as a special breed.
-
It did say adoptions only increased by 1.4%. I thought by sound of it, they would have increased by more than that. But I guess its only 45 days in. There's something about it that makes me feel uncomfortable. I guess because its just not making the most of what the advantages of rescue are. Maybe they should be emphasising how you can get a really good fit between you and the dog because you know exactly what the dog is like. Or even the fact that it is nice to be giving a dog a second chance. But I guess those ideas aren't as glamorous as the 'unique breed' idea.

Good luck for tomorrow, I'm sure it will all go well :) -
So, if a dog barks from inside the house at a door knocking sales person, it would be declared menacing? If the salesperson feels threatened then yes I feel threatened by sales people, can they be labeled menacing? Some sales people definitely qualify as menacing!
