OK if I'm not a breeder you don't know why its so important to me? I was just interested because of some things I had observed. I'm sorry if you think that I shouldnt ask questions or show an interest in things. That's alright, thanks for the replies anyway. I don't post often anyway, I'm a nobody in the dog world, just love all my animals. I'm suitably chastened and its no loss to anyone, I probably wouldn't post again.

The only reason I mentioned AI is that I know some dogs that have never done a natural mating. I guess if there is no other way I can understand it but I think it undesirable if a stud dog is unable to perform natural matings.

Beautiful pictures and while I wish noons was homeless, I actually think those dogs have much better lives that a huge percentage of other dogs. The are constantly with their owners which is what most dogs want more than anything. They are well exercised, behaved and from experience ( my sister is an outreach worker) the dogs are fed and cared for way before the owners think of themselves. Thank you for posting this, even though my heart breaks for anyone having to live on the streets.

Hi there I was just interested in peoples thoughts/opinions on what I have observed with current breeding practices in SOME instances.I'll just tell you a little of my background. Firstly I myself only ever bred one litter. I was registered, had my prefix, yes did the required exams and had 10+ years of mentoring with an older breeder who had over 50 years experience before embarking on breeding my one and only litter. Out of the three surviving puppies, I kept two, who were shown twice by a friend ( I have mobility issues) and then I decided I was happiest with them as simply my beloved companions. Maybe I would have been called a " backyard breeder??" Incidentally the two girls and I weekly visit an aged care home which they and the residents love (sadly not since Covid19, but hopefully with the vaccine rollout will be able to resume soon). Well after that long winded intro, I wanted to put out there what I have observed and that is some breeders have seem to have gone down the routine path of AI and pre planned Caesareans which I think is bad practice. Of course I am not saying C sections due to emergency situations (I experienced that after 2 pups born and then an emergency dash). Or the odd AI in special circumstances, but some I know routinely do one or the other and in some cases, both. I have to think this is mainly due to convenience ( for the breeeder) and surely this cannot be good for dogs in the long run. I couldn't post this in the breeders section because I no longer have that status but was just interested in others opinions. I am certainly not out to knock breeders because after my experience, I hold good ones in the highest regard. Any thoughts?

VEBO pet supplies have soft crates in all sizes. I bought puppy pens from them that were really good quality and well priced. They supply to Police force etc and are very reputable, also offer free postage.

All of us who have had to say goodbye to our precious ones can feel the heartache experienced. I'm glad you have two little ones that will fill your days. They will feel it too.

I don't often comment but you are doing a wonderful job with your sweet seniors. Sending hugs to your dear little Tamar. My last senior it was a matter of day to day and like you I was ready to take the final step with her when the time was right. You will both know. In the meantime cherish your times together as I'm sure you do.

I remember a few years back watching a program on ABC I think about the RSPCA and they were showing how they tested suitability to be adopted out. They held a doll that was supposed to represent a child, and bounced it towards the dog and if the dog backed away it was deemed dangerous and to be put down. Their reasoning was backing away meant that the dog would be a fear biter. I know if my dogs ( Shelties) were ever in that position they would be put down because shock horror they fit their breed standard of " wary with strangers". I couldn't believe this and it gave me an idea of how many healthy dogs with no fault get put down in these organisations. It is frightening.

That is terrible and after reading the link to the UK reports it seems to be something that is not uncommon with dealing with the RSPCA in other countries as well. They have a lot to answer for but sadly seem to be too busy lining their own pockets than what they purport to be.

Thank you asal for posting this, I totally agree with all you have said. Not only is it inhumane but seems to be the PRACTICE of our governments as they have sneakily done it before. I remember while Australia and the world were cheering the opening of the Sydney Olympics when all the horses entered the arena, in Guy Fawkes national park the brumbies were being slaughtered by aerial shooting leaving many maimed dying a horrific slow death. It is a national shame and should not be allowed to go on EVER! Please people sign this.

Sorry meant to add that many of these studies are funded by pet food companies as are many vet lectures on pet nutrition.

I have raw fed my dogs for 30+ years and it is the best thing I've ever done. You can be sure of everything that your dog is getting and adapt according to your needs and with all the dry dog food scares would certainly make me change it if I wasn't feeding raw. Their coats are shiny and they have a vitality that is clearly visible. I am often asked what I feed them. Just a side note, the ingredients in the Vets all natural mix is easily made up and I was fortunate many years ago that the vet I used put me onto raw feeding following Juliette de Bairacli Levy's "Herbal handbook for the dog and cat" Interesting fact was that Bruce Syme (of Vets all Natural) worked at my vets when he was starting out and took it a step further by marketing it and making a packet!

I think this is a cruel practice and should not be allowed. I noticed last time I registered my dogs at the council, a man was registering his puppy and the council charged him the high fee for undesexed dogs for puppies even at under three months. I also know of at least one breeder of my dogs breed that desexes puppies before they go to their new homes. I just think it is totally cruel, wrong and unnecessary to do this to a baby who has enough to cope with having vaccinations and microchipping ( I wish microchipping was done later too).

Hello Sheltiesrule, I just saw your post and your dogs breeder was Gill Spencer who moved some years ago to SA to live with her daughter who also bred Shelties, but under the prefix Lynsline. Gill no longer breeds and is a lovely lady but to be honest I don't know if she is still with us. The daughters name is Lynne Winterfield. Email is [email protected] I hope this may be of some help. Any dogs with Kendarlyn lines will be last bred about ten years ago.

On ABC's 7.30 report tonight they showed this property once again. The RSPCA has been called out on numerous times since 2004 but the RSPCA rep said that did not count and that each report had to be taken on an individual basis. Well it seems this guy is a repeat offender but that doesn't matter because "the owner complied with the RSPCA's requests??????? Go figure. Then they showed some footage from a puppy farm in Kerang ( I think the full report is on Monday) where the Gannawarra council say they are happy with how things are run there. The look in those 2 black labradors eyes will haunt me forever as one tried to scramble under the other with both trembling all over. The explanation there was "they didn't like the camera" The conditions: beyond belief. I know some people are labelled as "extremists" and of having hidden agendas but if they can help these dear souls and get them out of the hell they live in, when no one else does anything, they get my vote. Of course breeders being targeted for minor things is another thing, the point here is farming of dogs and cruelty and I think all dog lovers should be horrified and protest in the loudest possible way.

Yes, members of our community now. And they will find no shortage of different types of meat to eat in this community; meat that has been legally butchered in proper conditions and to proper standards. What happens in their country of origin STAYS in their country of origin - when it comes to eating dogs. Dogs are not an animal that are bred in this country as a source of nutrition for humans or other animals, and this needs to be clearly communicated to any newcomers. I am all for enjoying the benefits of multiculturism - but not the barbarism, thank you. Souff I TOTALLY AGREE with you. Those poor,poor animals.

Well done on your girl's Neuter Challenge, and at her first ever show? What a good girl! How lovely. CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU BOTH Just an opinion of mine regarding the Neuter classes, I think ALL shows should have them because it is very hard to see how popular they are if only a few on offer here or there, they should be at all shows and given at least a year to see how it's all going. Having read the entries for these shows it is terrific to see the numbers and I'm sure if other clubs followed suit, they too would be well patronised. Well done to all who entered.

You're kidding, right? This is the wording from the National Dog Annual on the front page of this very website: "MAKE NO MISTAKE this beautiful gloss publication will be sold in newsagents around Australia and a physical copy sent to All Breeds dog judges in Australia, New Zealand, Thailand and selected Asian nations." Where do the bulk of judges who come to Australia come from, I wonder?? I do agree with you Faolmor. I sometimes wonder if the ad is of the person and the dog is an after thought! I like that in the state publications ( ie Vic dogs) the dog alone is in the photo, after all that is who is being judged ( well we hope so!) And if the advertising didn't work, well people wouldn't do it. And, I too am concerned about what the affect is on the breed with the judges who do take notice of who is on the other end of the lead. Sorry, but the cynic in me wonders why else would some people will advertise, if not to bring certain dogs to judges' attention? Even the magazine recognises it. Let's just see how many "not very good judges" there are, after the magazine comes out I for one will definitely care about their opinion, because I care about my breed.

For what it is worth, I think that either a Bitch Challenge or Dog Challenge at Breed Specialty Shows should be accepted toward Grand Champion instead of the required Group wins. This is excellence in the Breed and would include each breed equally whether rare or not. This would return the focus to within the breed where it should be instead of the Group wins where many seem to be focused on because of the all important points. Of course a Group win is fantastic but it is in the breed ring first and foremost that really matters. This is of course only my opinion and I am sure there are many that would disagree with my views, but hey that's life!
