Women Injured And Animals Killed In Overnight Fires (caboolture Qld)
BCPuppy replied to Boronia's topic in In The News
so many tears I am lost for words  What a wonderful bunch you are -
 Tried this one and it works, well sometimes, and only for a short time, :D Marlin goes beserk when I touch a broom, I swear she can hear me pick it up from the other end of the yard, have tried distracting her with a treat or bone, but she will leave it as soon as I lay my hand on the broom even though she cant see me. Its now easier to get the vacuum out as she hates that, and the leaf blower for the yard, she hates that so much she got stuck behind the couch last time I used it. Or I wait until the OH takes her out.

Thank you, I will take that on board, I need to be firmer with the training obviously . Collar is always removed for brushing and on other occasions like getting rinsed off on return from the beach. I will have a look at other slickers and see what is available. Much appreciate your answer. Unless your slicker brush is too hard & scratchy your dog doesnt get to choice which brush it likes. The brush she does like will not do the job so the knots will get worse. You have the right comb so use that to the fulliest for behind the ears.as for the collar she can wear it BUT make sure you remove & brush,we groom fulltime & the number of dogs whose coat is attached to there collar as its not removed & brushed is countless, also picking a collar that is suitable makes a massive difference, some collars whilst look pretty for the humans are totally impractical for the dog & coat. It really is like brushing your hair do it regularly & thoroughly from the top through to the skin. Training the dog is amust & it doesnt get to pick & choose

Is this a show dog or pet?? At this stage i would say our equipment is wrong. You need a combo comb to brush behind the ears, good slicker brush(lawrence ever gentle, doogyman)great again for behind the ears to fluff out the coat before combing through The christensen brush depending on which one you brought is more a finishing brush. With her neck does she wear a collar?? showdog, thanks for the reply, Marlin is a pet, I was using a slicker, but she hates it, and have a couple of combs, one a combination and one wider teeth that turn, the christensen is a 27mm pin brush, that she is ok with. She does wear a collar, i changed it out recently for a narrow one hoping it might make a difference, my OH is against me removing it alltogether which would be my preference when she is at home I was kinda hoping someone would be able to give me some hands on tips, being remote it can be difficult to get advice.

Can anyone recommend a groomer in Geraldton? I have to make a quick trip there next week and thought I would take the opportunity to give my little girl a treat. She has a pretty long coat and has been moulting like mad the last couple of weeks, also seems to be getting more matting than I have found before, mainly around her ears and neck, so would like some help and advice as well as a good grooming session. I have bought a Christensen brush and try my best with her coat, but desperately need some guidance, would appreciate any advice. Thanks in advance.

So glad Archie is doing so well, he looks terrific, well done to you both.

Love reading this, I too was a little miffed that Marlin didnt like cuddles, but pleased she is independant, she amuses herself easily and doesnt fret when we are out. She does follow me around lots, yeah the toilet and the shower, only sleeps on the bed if the OH is not there, I think he fidgets too much for her , makes a dash for the end of the bed as soon as he gets up . The only time she lets me make a fuss of her is first thing in the morning when she is still half asleep, then I get lots of licks and am allowed to scratch her heaps. She always greets us enthusiastically and gets a belly rub, she too is not one for playing fetch, I can throw a few times and then its like - bored with that - and wanders off elsewhere, but loves tug games especially with my thongs. She loves the beach too and we have a great time there, I have accepted that she is just not a girl for hugs, and is just happy to be with me, actually when I think of it I get more cuddles swimming than anywhere else, thats just cos I am the best place to have a rest I guess it is a case of accepting each have their own personality, just like two legged kids, and loving them just the same.

Marlin refused to eat any offal, no matter how I tried to disguise it, she would manage to pick most of it out, or spit it out on the mat OH makes beef jerky so gave it a go with the liver and kidneys, now she thinks her own personal jerky is the greatest treat in the world Havnt tried it with brains tho, thank goodness I cant buy any here

I agree with cowanbree. It is up to the owner to stop this behaviour, there is no need for it if there is no provocation. I have two terriers next door that charge the fence and spit snarl and carry on if anyone goes within 2 metres of it, they bark all night at nothing if there is noone home. They are viscious nasty little dogs, but that is their owners fault . Fortunately we were able to fence off an area away from the boundary out back so that Marlin does not have to put up with them, we also used the weed matting so they cant even see into the yard. She just stands and looks at them as if to say wtf when they carry on if she is in the front yard. Pointees as suggested there are cheap options to fixing the fence too, some action on your part is better than keeping the dogs indoors.

Ive got one of those too, she hides my knickers in her bed for later, drags bras out on the lawn and chews socks to bits, she usually pinches them when I am in the shower so I am wandering around dripping in just a towel looking for them.

Marlin has always been a digger in the water bowl, took her to the beach at 9 weeks, she just followed us right into the water and swam like she always knew how to! I know her sire is a water nut so maybe its inherited! We are at the beach at least 3 times a week and she is never phased even when the surf bowls her over, not too keen on getting her head underwater tho, but loves watching us fishing and waits for the first fish to be caught claiming it is hers . Take her out on the boat all the time too, we bought her a life jacket as she is prone to jump in if I am swimming and loves balancing on the sides of the boat, only a matter of time before she is a 'dog overboard'. She has also been known to join us (uninvited) in the spa, takes a flying leap and lands in the middle I only have a problem with the huge amounts of sand she brings home in her coat that doesnt come out until hours later, even with a fresh water wash, which, incidentaly, she barely tolerates go figure.

Aawww what a sweetie, guess he will be getting an extra special Valentines day

Good on you for your commitment, Archie sounds like a darling. Dont fret too much, lots of good advice in these forums, main thing is to introduce new food gradually, delicate little tummies and all that. Marlin played with the first chicken wing I gave her (at 8 weeks)for ages before she realised she was supposed to eat it Found taking as much skin off as possible helped, now they go down in about 30 seconds. I only feed raw so cant help with canned portions, but he definately needs bones. If you have a good size freezer you can stock up on your next trip to the big city, OH recons I buy more food for the dog than for us now. Good luck and dont forget the photos!

We have the same problem, bones are mostly eaten on a mat inside, even then the ants find them sometimes. I found the water bowl the best way just turned out the tupperware cuboard until I found a couple of bowls that fit, but must say I like the idea of the chip n dip bowl, should be able to get them pretty cheap in the 2 dollar shops!

I heartily agree, I think sometimes we get a bit too precious about everything, but keeping informed is good! Marlin was given ice cubes when she was teething and absolutely loved them she would hold them against her gums before crunching into little bits, she still gets one or two before bed, thinks it is the greatest treat but never after a run or when really hot. I do make larger blocks in old butter containers with a few treats frozen in water flavoured with a little stock. Keeps her occupied for ages licking and licking, especially on these hot days. She is especially fond of having her belly rubbed with an ice cube :D

Hope everyones babies are doing well. Took her about 6 hours to wake up properly last night, but all seems to be well with Marlin this morning, spent the night on the end of the bed, stretched out on her back airing the wound Was licking a bit but I think the shaving rash is bothering her more than the wound so doused her with anti itch/rash powder, eyes are bright and was pestering to play, gave her the pain meds no problem. I am at work so left OH with lots of instructions on do's and dont's. Good luck to all with operations planned. Thanks so much to everyone for the support, it is much appreciated.

She is home. Very wobbly and staggers when she tries to get up, which she tries to do every time someone comes to the door. Tail wagging between sleeps so good sign. Already trying to lick stitches when she wakes, have collar but friend gave me some dimethyl will try that first. Me feeling very guilty too. Can see a long night coming up.

You and me both sandra64, hope all goes well for you today, I am a wreck, Marlin goes in midday, poor girl cant understand why I wont give her anything to eat. Will post update this afternoon. Hugs to everyone and the babies getting desexed today

Congratulations New puppies are so much fun! Your baby may not cry at all, Marlin never did, how lucky was I I too kept her by my bed, in a laundry basket at first, all padded so that she could snuggle in, and put my hand in the basket to stroke her if she so much as wimpered, she went from the basket to a bed beside me, and now she sleeps either on the floor at the end of the bed or just outside the door on the tiles (cooler). Enjoy Humphrey (great name btw) they grow so fast, make the most of the puppy breath.

Hi Puggawuggles Marlin is going for the big op on Wednesday, I have been told not to give her anything to eat that morning and that they will give me a collar and pain meds for her. I dont know about you but I am sooo worried, I dont care how many dogs get the op every day, I just know I will be a nervous wreck. :D I have no idea how I am going to keep her quiet, my biggest worry is keeping her out of water, it is so hot here atm, she is constantly dunking in the water buckets. OH has a couple of days off then the weekend so hopefully between us we can keep her occupied. On another subject I was horrified at the cost of the op, we are remote and only have vet come once a week, so things are always more expensive than in the city, but I hate to think how many dogs do not get desexed because the owners just cannot afford what many see as not a priority. We are having her microchipped at the same time and our bill will be over $400, luckily we are financial and had allowed for this in our budget. Good luck to both of you with your babies, hope all goes well.

Marlin loves frozen treats, squash up some old bananas, mix in honey, natural yoghurt and peanut butter, load into muffin or cake trays and freeze. No cooking easy peasy

Hi, I have been feeding Marlin raw since she came home at 8 weeks, the breeder already had her on a bone every day, and gave advice on gradually adding in minced chicken, vegies and rice. She has always had kibble available for snacking on, but rarely eats it these days. Only supplement I give is Omega oil. Balance is very important and lots of research is the go, lots of good info here in DOL, http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?showtopic=172826, and many other threads. Take it slow, I made the mistake of feeding her too many sardines too early once, will never do that again, runy smelly poos everywhere Ask as many questions as you like, lots of people feed raw here

How Often Do You Change Your Clamshell Water?
BCPuppy replied to Pete.the.dog's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Never thought about dog getting trapped under the clam shell ;) We sometimes leave it empty and propped up when we dont want wet dog all over the house. Will have to try it tonight and see if she can get out Gets pretty hot here too, and warming up nicely now. Marlin makes a pretty good job of emptying it herself, its on the lawn so does get pretty muddy, have to refill it a couple of times a week at the moment, and we have a couple of large washing up bowls around the yard which sometimes double as a bath Marlin will have a long coat and have sent for some polar collars, will avoid clipping her if I can as seems that sometimes causes thicker regrowth, but lots of grooming to keep coat thinner, fortunately she loves water especially out of the hose or sprinklers, so can water garden at same time as dog Loves the beach too and happy swimming even when its rough. Already averaging over 30 degrees, come January we will have days on end of over 40, I might need the polar collar myself then, good job I bought two
