Council & Neighbours - Separation Anxiety
Winterpaws replied to twoblackdogs's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I live next door to someone who has a dog that barks constantly and the stress it causes is off the radar. It doesn't help that she refuses to to believe that her dog barks and will then accuse other people of causing any barking. From a person on the other side I would say that you should have a chat with them and let them know that you take it very seriously and had no idea that there was a problem. Maybe ask them to let you know on the days it causes an issue and if they can jot down the times so you can try and pinpoint the issue. I'm in a situation where I am going to have to go a full complaint with council because my neighbour refuses to believe there is an issue. Having her dog declared a nuisance was not something I wanted to do I can also understand why people would not talk to you - our neighbour has threatened my dogs if I go to Council about hers -
He is in great health. The only issue he has had in the entire time we have owned him has been a skin irritation which has now cleared. Thyroid etc etc was all tested and is fine. I am pretty comfortable with the drug protocol that the vet has given me and what he explained makes sense. I just need to work out now how to manage the way we interact with him so that we don't make it worse. So should I still let him inside? How often? Should I crate him when inside? I am going to increase his exercise a lot as well. It's been hard in the heat as Henry is not up for big walks but I will start taking the separately. The other reason I have never walked them separately has been that Charlie will howl if left alone. I guess I need to just ignore that

Charlie's behaviour has gotten considerably worse since I posted this - http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?show...=212530&hl= It's now become clear that his issue is separaton anxiety rather than not wanting to be outside. This became obvious when he ripped down a baby gate and part of a wall when left inside. He also had a go at poor Henry in the process though not sure of the circumstances of why. I can just see that Henry has some wounds He seems to be getting worse and worse every day. It got to the point yesterday where it is so bad that I took today off to take him to the vet to see what they said. I had put him outside this morning and he immediately started trying to break his way into the ensuite through the flyscreen (I was in ensuite). I'm not sure what has caused this. Could it have been the heat that started the cycle? or maybe one of the kids next door has done something (a possibility). The vet has given me some xanax to use in the short term to try and also clomicalm (hmmmmm maybe he meant i should take the xanax ) Just wondering the best way to train him as well and how I should treat him. Normally if we are home they are inside. If we are out then they are out. I work from home and generally only go to the office one day a week. All the dogs sleep inside in the hall outside our bedroom.

To get me used to the idea I hate the thought of being home and leaving them out - I'm such a sook!
-
Completely fine with storms. Nothing much fazes him. He's just a big boofy lazy boy who hates being outside!

Coolest place is directly outside the house in the "al fresco" area which is concrete with tramp beds for them and it has big shade blinds up but still gets a breeze in from the sides. They also have a paddling pool there as he will dig water on hot days and we need to ensure he doesn't deplete the water supply if we are out. He won't get in it though - he would rather use the water bowls The thing that makes me think it is behavioural rather than actual discomfort is that he will do it as soon as you put out in the morning. So that could be 5 in the morning, 7 in the morning or 9 in the morning. If he thinks it will be a humid/hot day then he starts carrying on - even if the weather is mild and has a nice breeze like today. I can't give him access to the laundry as that is accessed by the yard the little one is in. I don't like to leave the little dog in with the two big boys in case he accidentally gets rumbled. I'd need to move all 3 of them into that yard and it is tiny. (Our yard are separated by fences across the back of the house). I'm going to put him back out again in spurts and maybe work out there for a bit myself. We rarely use our backyards ourselves so maybe if we spent more time out there as well he might not associate it so much as being outside?
-
There is nothing really outside that would catch his attention other than the dog he lives with and his bed and a wading pool. He is just stubborn and perceives it to be cooler inside. I just took my laptop and sat outside. It took him about 20 minutes and he finally calmed down. So after a bit I got up and came inside to vaccum. Then I went back out for a bit and when he was calm I let him and the others inside. I think he has just gotten so used to being inside almost 24/7 and so when we do put them out he doesn't want to. On stupidly hot days if we go out then we do leave the aircon on and leave them inside. But only on days that are 35+ I am thinking maybe they need to be out more and to stop him stressing then maybe I can sit out there and work for an hour or two? I really have no idea
-
No it seems to only be on days that he perceives it will be hot. This is a summer issue and tends to go away in winter or on really cool days. We've even pretty much stopped using air con inside the house as we thought maybe we needed to desensitize him a bit. I'm almost close to going ans getting his coat clipped off!! The thing is he normally is not affected by the heat at all, he handles it a lot better than the dogue. But because he wants to be in the house on the tiles he is working himself up into a frenzy. It's been going two hours now and as much as I want to bring him in I feel like I will be rewarding his bad behaviour if i do. As soon as he lays quietly on his mat then I might let him in for a small stint and put him back out again I'm worried if I don't nip it in the bud then he will try and actually escape (though I think he would just try get in the front windows then....)

I think I have created a monster. Charlie is our mally x sammy x ???. He's about 7 years old and we have owned him since he was six months old. He has started this new and very annoying habit of wanting to be inside the house all the time. It's probably my fault he is like this.... I work from home and so whenever I am home I generally have the dogs inside with me. About two weeks ago we came home and it looked like he had tried to dig out of his yard and had destroyed part of a fence. We thought maybe a new dog had been in the yard behind us and he had been trying to investigate. But I can see now that it is him wanting to be inside. He is normally mostly like this only on warmer days. But today is not that hot - it would be around 22 outside? I don't want to give in and let him in when he wants because I think that is giving in to him and setting us up for more issues on the days when I have to go to the office or when we want to go out. I cannot leave him inside when we are at work because we have indoor cats and I do not trust him unsupervised with them - plus when I do go to the office we leave very early and come home late so they would not get toilet breaks It is also driving me insane listening to him dong laps of the backyard, scratching at the windows and trying to climb the back fence. All he is doing is working himself up into a frenzy. Thankfully Henry is just ignoring him and not joining in! I'm not sure how to fix the issue other than to ignore him and increase his outdoor time?

I know I have said it before but I really hope people start suing asses for this sort of attack. I am the last person on earth to suggest going legal but maybe if people have to start paying with $$$$$$$$ (rather than the dogs life) then the message might get through and ownership of a dog might be taken more seriously. I know there will always be the dog who is an escape artist but there are so many irresponsible owners out there. It's about time they started learning in a way that will make then listen

Which part of it was balanced?

I've dealt with them a few times on Malamutes and have found them to be wonderful. As a shelter the ACT branch gets my support

Aussie Bulldog In Urgent Need In Cairns
Winterpaws replied to Winterpaws's topic in General Dog Discussion
Thanks for the offer but Yaps is rehoming him eventually. But if you have time to take a photo to update us that would be great. Sadly the vet check showed that at some time someone has kicked him and broken his rib It is healed though and they say he is in good condition for his age The RSPCA up there were fantastic I have to say - they even got him delivered to Yaps for me -

Thanks Belgrael. The RSPCA staff have been wonderful and at this stage I understand that they will deliver him to Yaps tomorrow for me. He is also going into boarding at this stage until they have a rescue spot available and I will cover those costs. It just goes to show that no matter how many questions you ask and how damn a good home it is - you can never be sure. As Jac also pointed out today - you always tell people to call you if they have ANY issues and they still don't!!! You have to wonder if you are bashing your head against a brick wall Have to thank Jac (Cordy) for her help in this as she did all the investigative work to find out what was going on with the old owner and she has also offered to help out with his boarding costs if need be ea - but if you see him when if you are there can you give the old guy a cuddle for me and tell him it's all going to be OK In his case the council stuff up has saved his life... -

Oh thanks Sas but he is up in Cairns and probably best not to transport him at the moment. The Yaps people sound really sensible and they are a no kill shelter. -

He's all sorted - I hope I'm paying to board him for a week and then he will go into rescue. To his adoptive owner who knows he is there and will be PTS tomorrow and could not care - F%$# you! -
Is there anyone in Cairns who can help a 7 yr old male bulldog. Vetwork is all done. He was rescued from Wyong Pound in 2005 and rehomed but unfortunately his paperwork does not appear to have been processed by the pound as I have received a call that he is in need and still microchipped to my name. Obviously not being up there it is difficult to comment on his temprament but he was fine whilst in care. He was kennelled with other dogs down at Cordys Rescue. She had no difficulties with him. He has not passed a behaviour assessment by the RSPCA - they think that he may resource guard. His ""adoptive" owner has been contacted and they have said that his only issue was that he would get a bit excited around little kids and might knock them over. They had no issues with him otherwise. We understand that the relationship broke up and the girlfriend got custody of Oscar only to give him away. The new owner has obviously put little effort into finding him as he has been in a pound for two weeks. He only has today left and I was only contacted yesterday (but did not get messages until I got him after work). So we need a miracle to find him some care

Rehoming High Drive Stafford
Winterpaws replied to Mavriksbt's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Oh well if he kills again it's your conscience you have to live with You seem to have made up your mind so I honestly have no idea why you posted the thread if you wanted to rubbish everyone. I think seeing a qualified experienced behaviouralist is a very sensible recommendation. -
Rescuers In Victoria Say Letter Is A Death Warrant
Winterpaws replied to Steve's topic in In The News
Victoria just seems so backward in their companion animal laws. I'd never consider moving there! (Sorry Victorians! I was born there!) -
Oh no - I am so sorry to you ad your husband. I know how much you adored Cooper and Suki
-
If you buy a few at a time you can get them cheaper, especially if you get togethor a "buying group" and order a bulk lot direct If you decide to do that let me know as I would probably get a couple I'd offer to organise a buying group but swamped with stuff at the moment and don't want to let people down

I don't actually know the real difference between Pyohex or Malaseb? I was told once by the vet nurse that the Malaseb is slightly more broad spectrum as it's anti-bacetrial and anti-fungal where as Pyohex is just one?? I also just went online to purchase the Phyohex lotion which is sometimes sold in the Malaseb shampoo as a combo pack. I might use that as the conditioner while this issue is so bad and then switch to Aloveen again. I've noticed Jet drinking more than usual? Can the steroid treatment affect him like this after the one course and gain weight too?? It's a nightmare! I think they treat different conditions. I know an expert so will ask her and report back Cortisone does make them drink a lot more water and I found Charlie was hungrier as well
-
Yeh Charlie is not scratching either. He only seems irritated when the patches get really big Cortisone did absolutely nothing for him and only seemed to mask the issues. He just drank a lot of water and gained about 4kgs I'm thinking of trying Pyhoex shampoo but washing a double coated dog is hard when this weather keeps chopping and changing Hopefully Sunday will be warm and I will give him a bath

SV???? Malamutes can be prone to ZRD too so may be worth ruling out. Glad you plan to do a scraping as it really is the best way to see what is going on - it should at least tell you if and what bacteria is present. I will ask for that test as well In the meantime he has attacked his tail and it is red raw and he is in obvious discomfort :p Not sure what I could put on it tonight to soothe it? SV = super vet Do you have any Neocort or Neo Topic or any other cream with some cortisone in it? It's really the only thing that's going to be strong enough to provide relief. Sounds like his itching is a definite possible cause. But whether or not that is primary or secondary is the question. Biopsies are awesome and should give you an idea whether its an allergy, hormonal etc. I should have known that He's been at the vet and we have some neocort for the tail and some AB's to trial for 2 weeks. If no improvement then he will do the bunch biopsy. Nothing really came up on the skin scrape Frustrating!!!!
