  1. I wouldn't have a vizsla in an apartment! I only know of one (mine) who would cope, because all he wants to do is sleep (his breeder jokes he is 'special ' and we broke the mold with him as hes so lazy unless he can steal food), but the first 3 years were very challenging until he matured (many many tears!). We still have craters in the backyard from his digging when he was alone too long. My mum's bitch is nearly 3 (we adopted her a year ago), has half an acre to run around on, two playmates and she is completely nuts even with someone now home 24/7 she is constantly on the go, and very needy and velcro, almost like she's making up for lost time. She is slowly improving, but was definitely not suited for a home where the owners were absent a lot, even with daily walks, it just wasn't enough for her so they rehomed her to us. Vizslas need their people (mine would come to work if they could!!). I absolutely adore the breed, they are my heart breed but I will not get another until I have the time to devote to a pup properly as they are very hard work as youngsters. Fabulous dogs? Yes Placid ? No way! Suitable for apartments? Not in my opinion.
  2. We just use the plastic ones with rubber feet from woolies, they stack easily, clean easily and the dogs can't tip them over.
  3. We just got an automated letter for vacs after being told last year not to bring them back for 3 years! I just shrugged it off, syste is automated, its not the end of the world, its easy enough to just not make the appointment, given theyre more likely aimed at those who won't get things done without reminders.
  4. Sorry to hear Kirislin, she was a special soul.
  5. Im so sorry GB. Cherish those memories.
  6. Yes I think at this point I will be steering clear of dog decisions and will just have to wait till I can get a dog for myself that I can care for Sounds like a great idea, and when you have a secure yard and won't need to leave it on a chain...
  7. We have one we suspect won't give a rats! She kept checking the door and crying the first evening, after that it was like, old owners who? She'll happily go off with anyone anytime, and I think it's good, shes very adaptable despite having crazy high energy levels. Her old owners will be seeing her soon, we've had her nearly a year and I'm curious to see how she reacts. She's a complete contrast to my other dogs in that regard.
  8. Good to hear she might be okay for a while longer. When mum's lab died unexpectedly last year, we actually ended up with another dog 2-3 weeks later by sheer luck, and she is just wonderful and came at the right time. There's no time frames only what is right for you.
  9. I was thinking similar, plus every time he's sent outside he has the excitement of being let back in which is counter-productive to what you're trying to do.
  10. Cosmolo will be the best bet once everything else has been ruled out, she's nice and close.
  11. Oh look, magic, now there is one  good luck Megs!
  12. Caulfield /Malvern etc may not be the cheapest of areas, so just bear that in mind. You also accidentally have two threads going but if you pm Troy he can merge them :)
  13. We have chicken wire with a wooden rail on the front, ringlock and barb on the other 3 sides that back onto the neighbours cow paddock. Would chsnge it to chicken wire and rails if we could, much more secure. Our dogs have never bern inclined to get through it, even when the coes tease them. We are very lucky though!
  14. Waste of money unless it's run by a trainer. Did one with my boy with the vets and it was hopeless, we didn't end up going to them all!
  15. We adopted a dog last year (private rehome), she was ridiculously fussy. She would regularly not eat what she was given for days, but beg for food. She got as long as it took for the other two to eat before her food was taken away. At one stage she was eating around half a cup of food (she left the rest) every two days. Now she will eat her food 95% of the time when it is given to her, and would eat all day if we let her, she's a piggy. She gets no extra treats except bones, and fed once a day. Tough love is the way to go, I promise he won't starve himself! It is so hard but works, after a few weeks.
  16. Contact the breeders listed on DOL asking if they have any pet home puppies available. Just because they breed show dogs doesn't mean they wont sell to pet homes. There is no registry or list of breeders who sell to pet homes as far as I know, you just have to ask! You are making it more complicated than it needs to be.
  17. My dog started toileting inside in July, he's six and fully house trained. He even pooped in our bed and was not lasting all night without a poo break, all strange for him. We put it down to stress as the vet said he was fine, even though it smelt a bit weird then a few weeks later he had surgery for cyst things, and the pooping began again immediately and he was quite sick unlike the first time. Turned out he had a nasty stomach bug, that was over 5 months ago and no more pooping inside despite major upheavals like moving house.
  18. Yep it can take up to 24 hours to go down, another dose of antihistamines won't hurt either. When our kelpie swallowed a bee, he got a jab at the vets then we got given more antihistamines to give him the next day.
  19. I'd get him done, otherwise he'll be suffering through the hottest part of summer. Bundy got a bath this morning at the groomers and it was already over 30 at 8.30 (but he's not as furry as Fergus!). Just air the car before putting him in.
  20. Have a look at the long lines K9pro sell, they're much sturdier and safer than retractable leads, like this, you choose the length http://k9pro.com.au/gripper-long-line-10m-x-16mm/
  21. I have 3 of those...one of the cats will get the lid off if it's not 100% secured but he's a persistent little rascal and otherwise they're great. 2 with Dalmatians and 1 with an Aussie! I use these too, they're great.
  22. Bundy had similar symptoms, he had a bacterial stomach bug. He smelt really bad and was having accidents in the house prior to getting sicker. A few weeks on antibiotics and he improved.
  23. Bundy is a vizsla. He is not very fast and is a crap hunter. He has killed his first bird this year at age 6, and I was horrified, but he was just following instinct! It is what it is, I don't want it to be a regular thing so I just won't encourage it.
  24. Bundy butt wiggles in excitement or happiness. He also does a full body wiggle that is similar to the worm dance  He finishes off wit a leap and twist.
  25. Diesel wore blue before we got Bundy. Bundy was a Mr Blue, so he then got blue and Diesel wears red (he's black so suits him better anyway!). Their harnesses, leads and car clips all match
