Crate Training A Kelpie
Bundyburger replied to Bundyburger's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Oh yes, for sure... there's already been times where it would be handy!!! -
My boy knew hi 5 before touch as well.. To help him learn the difference quickly, I'd put a treat in my hand so he could smell and touch it... and when he touched my hand, click, then he got the treat. Holding it at a different angle for the command works well too to start. Now he touches both my hands and hi 5s easily as they're ever so slightly different commands. I half taught him to give left and right paw but he has to be concentrating really hard to work that one out I only fall in a heap with clicker training when it's time to introduce the command! I've also started doing it with a 5yo Kelpie, and he is a super star.

Crate Training A Kelpie
Bundyburger replied to Bundyburger's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
He's better in the car now, he'll can do 2-3 hour trips easily, but circumstances out of our control may not allow us to have the opportunity to do a nice long slow trip with him, seeing as OH will have a strict timeframe to get us up there as he'll have to go back to work, and I'll have to start my new job. Regardless of if we fly or drive, he needs to be crate trained, as it'll be the only way he'll be allowed to sleep inside at the new place if we go (it is beyond our control, adn we aren't going to turn down a chance of a lifetime over that). For all I know OH may turn down the chance still (but it's not likely) so I'm planning ahead so it can all happen smoothly and calmly with as little stress to all of us. Moving states will be hard enough -
She'll probably keep chewing for a while yet... our youngest was about 18 months before he stopped.. and that last effort was a hole in the lino! Good luck with her, she sounds like a handful.

Crate Training A Kelpie

Oh and an epic car trip is on the cards but circumstances may not allow it and he needs to be crate trained before he goes for bed, so Im needing to cover all based. We want the least stress for him, even if it means calling it quits and leaving him home. We have to try first -

Nek that's a lovely offer but he's also DA(which is being worked on) so that and the fact he can get distressed at going in the car would probably be a bit much. I will bear it in mind in case I get stuck. Cosmolo, methinks you might have to come see us to help once I've bought his crate to have a session with him again.. I'm hoping it all gets confirmed ASAP so I know what time frame I have. As we only thought about it yesterday he's not got his own crate but he will have before I start work with him. -
OH mentioned to me tonight that we(or more I) will need to start crate training our kelpie as it's highly likely that we'll be moving interstate, complete with the dogs. This is tricky because he has a fear of small, enclosed spaces that he can't get out of, well as long as they look like cages or crates anyway.... He was in an accident a few years ago when he broke his harness and collar and jumped out of the ute (hence hating cars), and spent a lot of time in cages at the vet with surgeries and things. They refused to put him in a cage when he was there a few months ago for a tumour removal because they knew he wouldn't cope. He completely flips out and will fear bite (so i've been told), and obviously this is something we'd like to avoid if he has to go on the plane, so we figured crate training will help him feel safe. Plus their sleeping arrangements are going to be different if we go, so if he can be trained to sleep in a crate it'll make things a lot easier for us as we won't have too much freedom to decide where they go to sleep. We have a crate for Bundy already and Diesel has curled up asleep in it while it was open once and walked around in it twice, in two years.... On both occasions there was no prompting from us, we just saw him in there. As soon as we moved, even if it was away from him, he would fly out and run away from us (which he does when he thinks something he won't like is going to happen, like being locked in). He gets no response when he behaves like that, cos it's not necessary and an extreme reaction from him, so it's not an attention thing, he just snaps...Tonight when he snuck in, he was looking for biscuit scraps B might have left behind but as soon as I told him he was a good and clever boy (without moving near him) he bolted out and his pupils were dilated and he went all stressy. Bundy came crate trained, and he loves his crate so I never had a problem there, so I don't know how I can get Diesel comfortable and happy to be crated. He is the same size as Bundy, but I feel like he may be more comfortable in the next size up as it seems to be too small for him, but I'm not sure. His fear level is incredibly high, and he reacts much like he did when he wouldn't get n the car(fixed that by buying a new car lol) he will freeze and stop moving, his pupils dilate and if pushed he'll start to shake and pant so I'm really stuck on how I can 'convince' him that it's good and he wants to go in there. He will hunker down low, and not come near you if you hold a bikkie near the crate and call him.. he is getting better, some days he'll actually come over and be 1m away, but ultimately he is still terrified of it if he thinks he has to go in it. I'm wondering whether it could be worth buying the crate games dvd and giving that a go? Or is it likely to cause him more stress that way seeing as he doesn't want to go in at all? I am doing some basic obedience with him at the moment, and his drive is so high, he's so much fun. Would I possibly be best trying to incorporate the crate into our obedience sessions, to see if that makes a difference? I'm thinking he may be so focused on doing the right thing as he's in drive that he'll forget it's so scary and confined. He's also got basic clicker training too... Obviously I want to make it his nice safe haven and have him relaxed and happy to be in there. I will have approx 8-12 weeks I think to get him sorted, maybe longer. We love this boy to pieces, and don't want to leave him behind with the inlaws if it all, so it's important we get him comfortable and safe in the crate, however if it can't be done to our satisfaction, then he'll stay behind. So give me your best ideas please people!

Harper won't forget him anyway..... I remember when we rehomed one of our dogs years and years ago... We saw him some 2 years later... and he recognised us straight away. They don't forget.

My dogs sit and watch NCIS. If they see a dog on tv, be it an ad or otherwise... they come up and stare and whine at the tv.

You'd probably have better luck putting this in general...

Which Clicker Training Kit To Get?
Bundyburger replied to Isabel964's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I seperate, otherwise there's jealousy and you get two dogs trying to get in on the fun. -
My boy has just started this too, complete with the back feet flicking... I'm now really choosy about when i let him stop, and he's slowly improving...

When OH and i first met, he warned me he had a dog who hated strange people, particularly women, unless they entered the house with him. I showed up, he opened the door... holding back this barking kelpie. Diesel threw himself at me, put his paws on my chest and licked me. As soon as I sat on the couch WHAM, 25kg of kelpie was on my lap, licking my face... it was love at first sight. He was glued to my side from then on. OH often jokes that he only got together with me because his dog loves me I could see from the look on OH's face that he'd never done that to anyone before. I love my Diesel. Bundy is very much a mummy's boy.... but part of it is lack of training on OH's part cos he finds B annoying!! OH was very much no dogs on the bed.. but the first night I stayed over, Diesel decided to hop up(he'd never done that before apparently) and OH didn't kick him off.. he's stayed there ever since. Bundy takes up too much bed space so he's crated. He tends to lie next to me and push me out of bed
-
The kelpie sleeps on the bed (or on his mat on the floor) but gets off if he's really hogging and we tell him to move. The V sleeps in his crate, but every morning he's let out for snuggles so he dives under the doona and curls up in front of my tummy and goes back to sleep until the alarm goes off. Not sure how he'll handle the change when OH is on a different shift and gets up at the same time as me... He isn't allowed in the bed(but can be on top) when OH is!

What i did with my boy who had shocking recall, was get him to sit in front of me, while I held a treat. I'd say his name when he looked at me, and treat. Then I'd wait for him to look away and repeat (he'd never run away cos he wanted fooood). Then when he responded to his name i moved onto turning it into a proper recall. Now he's pretty good.

I'd get a trainer in to assist... I wouldn't be tolerating any dominance from a 3mth old pup over an older dog, be it smaller than him or not. It's hard for us to advise when we can't see the problem. Good luck

5-5.30am, OH gets up for work. He lets Bundy out of his crate. Bundy flies into the bedroom, onto the bed and under the doona We sleep for an hour, along with Diesel. 6.30, when the alarm goes off, we bounce out of bed. Dzogs play while i get ready for work, then they're outside all day. I am not a morning person, so it makes me feel better giving them an hour of snuggles before we get up Get home a bit before 5, straight in to change, then one will get a walk, the other a training session and I alternate, but Diesel normally just gets a training sesh as we're still working on issues. We walk for nearly an hour (I don't like walking in the dark around our area) then come home. Dogs sleep while i cook dinner. They eat at 7.30, then go to bed whenever we decide. Routine must be the same every day or else someone has a meltdown and turns into destructo dog... He lanscaped the lawn today because OH wasn't home at the usual time  Bundy also goes to agility most sunday mornings... This generally keeps him happy all week and less destructive and sensitive, but he still gets walks.

Looking For Thread About The Best Cars For Dogs
Bundyburger replied to lovemymutts's topic in General Dog Discussion
The article says that car never went into production. We're going holden wagon, purely because the ford wagons aren't being made anymore, so it will get hard to buy parts. -
Relax. Most pups don't eat much the first week or so... everythings different so they go on strike... if he is hungry, he WILL eat. Chicken necks were a fave for our boy when he was younger, but he didn't even want those. I think you're expecting a little much too soon, but I think we all go through that... we kinda forget how much of an upheaval it is for them and expect they should just fit in straight away.
