Considering Rehoming. How Do You Choose Who?
Bull Arab replied to Sharna3's topic in General Dog Discussion
Ok just a quick thought and a few points 0. You don't necessarily need to get rid of your dog here!! 1. The fights are not causing damage to either dog (physically) so the fight to bite ratio is pretty low and both dogs may have good bite inhibition? This is a good thing and you can work on it. I am sure either dog could inflict serious injuries in one or two bites if it so desired. I am not saying it is ok but perhaps it's not as bad as you think. 2. If the fights stem from food aggression then is it possible to feed them separately (are they crate trained?). 3. What advice has your trainer given you about what other resources they may be guarding? Are you one of those resources? Can the way you interact with the dogs be setting them off? 4. Look for the early signs of it beginning and give the dogs something else to do. Hackles up lip licking, yawning = Call one dog over and ask it to sit, then call other dog over and ask it to sit when they are sitting quietly give them a treat. You sit = you get a treat. You continue the obnoxious behaviour you don't get a treat..... Make sense? I come when i am called and i sit then she throws a ball, or does a happy dance or something!!! This way with time the dog may realise there are better more fun things to do than growl at each other! Talk to your trainer about the options. 5. Can you separate them permanently? We have two dogs that have a kill on sight agreement (a bitch and a dog) when i discuss point one above both dogs have been to the vet more than once with lots of stitches required. These two lead perfectly happy lives in separate dog runs (given the both have other dogs for company) and are fed separately. So it is not a bad idea. Just a few thoughts to start your mind off explore a bit and you may come up with a few answers. -
I note he is AI'ing as well... Does that mean he doesnt know how it happens naturally when a daddy dog really loves a mummy dog??

CAUTION HIGH NERD CONTENT I just had a good look and find it very interesting that NONE of the Brisbane Local Laws or Acts / Regs specify ANY area as an approved off leash area!! Despite including the following in the Animals Local Law http://services.dlgp.qld.gov.au/locallaws/data/postamalgamation/CCBRIS/00_Animals%202003%20LL_res16-06-09.pdf "off leash area" means any area of the City of Brisbane designated by Council as an off leash area. - However i have been unable to find any legal document that designates any at all - Definition of effective control (dogs) 4. A dog is under effective control only if— (a) in an off leash area the keeper of the dog is able to control and direct the dog to ensure that the dog does not — (i) attack a person, animal or thing; or (ii) damage property; or (iii) enter any land without the consent of the owner or occupier of the land; or (b) in any area other than an off leash area, (other than the premises in which the dog is ordinarily kept)— (i) the dog is held on a leash or chain strong enough to restrain the dog, and extended to not more than two metres long, by a person who is— (A) capable of controlling the dog; and (B) holding no more than one dog unless the person is capable of controlling all the dogs held at the same time; or Example— To be capable of controlling a dog a person must be— (a) strong enough to restrain the dog; and (b) old enough to understand the responsibility of keeping the dog under control. (ii) the dog is confined or tethered in or on premises or a vehicle so as to be— (A) unable to leave the premises or vehicle; or (B) unable to attack a person or animal from the premises or vehicle; or © the dog is participating in an obedience trial, or training for an obedience trial under the supervision of an organisation recognised by the Council for the purposes of this section; or (d) the dog is being exhibited at an exhibition under the supervision of an organisation recognised by Council for the purposes of this section. (e) the dog is a racing dog participating in a racing meet or trial recognised by Council for the purposes of this section. The provision on parks http://services.dlgp.qld.gov.au/locallaws/data/preamalgamation/BRIS/09_Parks%20LL_res20-4-99.pdf States the following 7. No person shall drive or bring, or cause to be driven or brought, into a park any animal other than a dog held on a leash. 20. No person shall cause or suffer any dog belonging to him, or in his charge, to enter or remain in a park, unless such dog be, and continue to be, under proper control, and be effectually restrained from causing annoyance to any person, and from worrying or disturbing any beast, and from entering any ornamental water, and from injuring or destroying, worrying or disturbing any fowl in such park. So one must wonder if you can actually have a dog off leash in Brisbane (excluding private and state owned land) unless you are competing!!

I used to work in the pest animal world and did a lot of public education days. One afternoon I brought home a rather convincing looking stuffed dingo (a taxidermied one not a toy one). My big tough Great Dane Cross came bounding out of the house to see me as she does every afternoon. She was bouncing in circles around the car being a big kid until i opened the back of the ute and she saw the dingo. She stopped in her tracks, air scented, sniffed the dingo, put her tail between her legs and bolted inside and onto the bed!!!!! I managed to coax her outside later on and she stood at the side of the house looking around the corner, hackles up shaking and too scared to go round the corner. When i walked over and picked up the stuffed dog she ran back inside again. Such a brave girl she is.. I also note she will hold on until she is bursting rather than go outside in the rain. She will however beat up the BC's at home if left alone with them.

Ever thought of it from the dogs point of view??? http://www.theonion.com/articles/dog-humiliated-in-front-of-entire-park,2791/

Good thing there was an entire jerrycan of fuel in the shed for just such a problem!! I dont know what she was whinging about I made it home the little light was not on yet and the gauge was on e for enough!!

Perhaps you could have followed him to his car, waited till he got in and pee'd in his tank then said 'Ahh.... there ya go' when it wouldn't start. Such a shame that dogs like his frequently get into trouble with 'other peoples dogs', I mean clearly it is not his responsibility to ensure his dog is under control and not being obnoxious to others!!

AnimalCare have the paste version http://www.animalcare.net.au/s/Keyword/behave/SearchType/2/SortItem/1 but these guys mainly deal with horse stuff I have used that on horses and it seems to work well. As it is a Troy product it should be fairly easy for any produce shop to order in for you (they are a fairly well known brand). Or you could go to their website directly and ask them. http://www.troylab.com.au/ On the other hand have you studied the diet?? I guess we can give up on all that training and conditioning (hell lets forget socialisation and experiences as well) all we need to do is feed 'decent food' because after all, all dogs are exactly the same in every way and will respond in the same way to the same situation every single time and diet is the main influencing factor. The fools like Dunbar and Yin now nothing about dog behaviour compared to the experts at Hills and Mars!!

I was in the middle of posting a reply and was kicked out about 10:30 last night. When I logged back in there had been some major changes. Trust me the last few posts were worthy of a report to a moderator so perhaps it was canned as it got a bit to emotional!!! .

Here is a thought.... We have a very nice dog trailer yet we don't let the dogs travel in it. We drive with the dogs in the back of the wagon (we have a liberty and a Sante-fe) and travel with all of the gear in the trailer. When we get where we are going we unpack the trailer and let the dogs sleep in it!!! works well for the dogs as they get the AC on the drive and the comfy trailer to sleep in!! So if you are deciding between them i say get one of each!!

Behaviours That Could Lead To Dominance
Bull Arab replied to lovemyrottie's topic in General Dog Discussion
What is dominance between a dog and a handler? I have observed our not insubstantial pack many many times. I have seen the pack structure develop and change with additions and as dogs mature and I have observed varying degrees of dominant behaviour between the dogs. Not once have I seen these behaviours aimed at me or any other person handling the dog, infact the behaviours they display with humans are markedly different. I don't believe any of our dogs are trying to dominate me for one simple reason, what could they hope to achieve by doing it? They are not going to be able to mate with me or the real boss of the household, nor do they have to defend their honour from one of us, I / we provide the food when we say it should come so they are not going to get fed first, there may issues within the pack when one dog gets a bit more inside or couch time than the other, but I doubt they think they can get in there and get the couch and lock me in the laundry, so at the risk of anthropomorphising what on earth is in it for them to go to the effort required to dominate me? I do give our dogs enough credit for knowing what they can get away with and how many of the traditional 'dominating' behaviours are them doing just that, or displaying behaviours they have rehearsed and are comfortable with. As a case in point when lined up for a flyball run one of our dogs will put his back feet on ours, I have been told in the past that this is domination as he is trying to get one up on me by having the upper hand so to speak'. In fact he seems to do it as he is excited and uses the feet to push off on. He will do the same thing if you hold him back in the yard and throw a ball. Another dog always pushes past and insists on going through the back door first. Is he being dominant and demanding to go through the door first? The fact he normally runs flat out (sliding all over the polished wood floor) and skids to a stop with his nose in the bin or in front of the barrel of kibble says to me is belly is the only thing being dominant in that relationship!!! Then there is the dog that jumps up on me when I am on the couch (if only she wasn't a dane cross this would be ok), is she dominating me when she leaps up and shoves her head under my hand? Or is it just that she loves to have her ears scratched? Again as Dunbar said. Spend less time worrying about domination and trying to read the domination signs you and your dog are sending and more time training, playing and enjoying your dog!! -
Have a listen to this. Ian Dunbar says it much better than I can, this iwoof deals with toilet training both puppies and new older dogs. http://www.dogstardaily.com/radio/202-%E2%80%93-loo-logistics

How Can Anyone Think Its Right To Hit A Dog!
Bull Arab replied to whitka's topic in General Dog Discussion
Ok I promise to be serious for a moment, to throw the clicker amongst the check chains in this discussion I would like to raise the concept of moral responsibility and punishment. It is a well accepted philosophical concept that animals other than humans (contrary to the way some treat them this does include dogs) do not experience moral responsibility. By this I mean they do not know what they did was wrong, they have no understanding of shame and don’t (contrary again to what many feel they see in their pets) feel guilty. They may choose to or not to display a behaviour to achieve a positive response from a leader or other pack member, or even a positive response from it's self (I'm hungry, there is food in the bin, I knock the bin over I get food, now I not hungry, knocking bin over = positive response) and can learn not to do something (like touch an electric fence) if there is pain involved but, they cant understand what they did was morally wrong (I should not knock the bin over it's wrong to make a mess on the floor). Where am I going with this? Let say I give my child a whack on the bum for fighting with her sister, or having a tantrum, or for hurting the dog. When she calms down I can explain to the child that it was because what she was doing was wrong, don’t hit your sister, don’t throw a tantrum, it is the wrong thing to do and if you do it again the outcome may well be the same . Given, some parents take this to the extreme as I witnessed in a shopping centre yesterday when a child ran off and his father yelled out to him 'I told ya not to do that now I am gunna havta belt ya' but I think you get the message. I believe if the child is too young to understand the reason then there is probably no excuse for hitting unless it is to stop them touching a hot plate, grabbing a power cord on the kettle or some such emergency. This experience can't be reflected in the dog, you can't explain that chewing a shoe is 'wrong' and that is why you hit / kicked it, the dog doesn’t know right from wrong and given the opportunity in the same circumstance it will probably do it again. Getting physical with an animal cannot improve the relationship as the animal may grow to appreciate you as unpredictable, through hurting it for a reason it does not understand. We know it's wrong but the dog doesn’t, so why punish it?? Does that make sense? -

I am a male and we are genetically predisposed to leaving wet towels on the bed, floor, etc etc etc. Oh has had to revert to this as clearly positive reinforcement hasn't worked on me!! -
Great work mate. you must be very proud. I remember when you got her and that in itself was an awesome result, let along where she has made it to! Next years challenge is to see what else she can do. Given she had a 3 obstacle attention span at agility I would like to see if that has improved as well but think I will give disk dog a go first that looks like too much fun. Dunno if you read Jo's FB but the fast one is on a forced break (and looks like a whippet ATM) so i have a bit more time for the Pup and Billie over the upcoming weeks!!

Here we go I have an idea for you Tonight on your way home go to the shop and get the following. 1 Packet of 3 min noodles 1 Packet of Tim Tams 1 Bucket of KFC 1 6 pack of Bundy and Coke 1 Bottle of water 1 Packet of Jaffas 1 Piece of 4X2 Call and say you have made dinner so just come home Set table as follows Plate with KFC in centre Tim Tams on plate at edge Open Bundy can on other edge Soften noodles (no seasoning) then put in a bowl on the table when cold. Put water in a dirty glass Get a treat pouch and put the Jaffas in it and stand out of sight with the 4X2 When he comes in and grabs anything but the noodles yell at him in a language he doesn't understand hit him with the 4X2 and take a piece of chicken or a tim tam for yourself. It is very important at this point not to explain why or to speak in english. If he trys to defend himself you know what to do. When he goes for a bundy again yell in Swahili hit with 4X2 and drink some bundy yourself. Repeat until he goes for the noodles (no fork) and when he does throw a jaffa at him and say "YES" good boy. Same goes for the water Repeat until he gets the message or you break the 4X2. Then give the left over's to the dog (but take the bones out of the chicken) This is very similar to the method my OH employed to get me to pick up towels and put socks in the washing basket!!!! -
Just a word in the ears of QLD DOLers It seems there may be someone out there who is not an authorised implanter selling microchips (not implanting them but selling the chips through the post) to non authorised implanters in QLD. These chips are also not registered on any database. I did some research and the QLD State law is very clear. You must be an authorised implanter to sell them, you must be an authorised implanter to buy them, and you must be an authorised implanter to implant them. They must also be registered (by the person that implanted them) on an approved database within 7 days. The fines are up to $20,000 So be careful and always use an authorised implanter (yes I am one before you ask so I am pretty clear on the law and I know it took a lot of study to get the qualification). Implanters should be able to quote you their AIN if you ask.

Well it is a brag thread!! It would appear one of the QLD flyball clubs now has 2 chockie BC's. After taking her a year to learn how to learn and after banging my head against a wall repeatedly (and with just a little help from a few who know quite a bit more than I do) my rescue girl has finally made it as a reliable racing dog. Last weekend she did well as start dog (and just to annoy me we got a -0.002) and also ran second, third and last without any problems. To impress me she ran 4.9 seconds several times (with only 12 feet run-up) so as the gap increases and so does her confidence she may even be quite a fast little girl. Not bad for a pound dog that was destined for a plastic bag if I hadn't pushed very hard to give her a chance!!! Oh and the real brag - Her box turn looks like it came straight off a Springloaded DVD!!

Pairs would have been a great idea when I used to do that job. However most of the Councils I worked for only had a limited number of staff and vehicles and would have had sooo many jobs on any given day that they could not have 2 rangers in the same vehicle and got even close to meeting the public's expectations of how fast a job should be completed. It was also common for the first ranger available to attend an aggressive animal incident ASAP. We don't know what went on in the yard!!

A long time ago on a plane of existence far far away a lady with an odd accent rang and asked to have a White Monaro picked up. After asking her to say it again it still sounded like a White Monaro..... When it was confirmed she was not talking about a car and it was a fairly large bluish coloured dog the Weimaraner light came on!!!! We are sure that’s what she was saying it is just not what we were hearing!!!

Dog Stopped For Driving Darwin Bus
Bull Arab replied to Perry's Mum's topic in General Dog Discussion
See now if it had of been an Aussie he would have been in the back, AC in his face at just the right temperature, surfing the net on his phone to find the next flyball or agility comp, telling the driver what he wants at the drive through while looking out the window thumbing his nose at the commoners that have to walk or drive their own cars!! All while looking good!!
