Rubbish! Its the dog within the coat, breed, and the body that is of importance along with confidence that you give the situation. I agree. Its the individual personality of the dog that makes the difference. Large dogs can quite often be much more gentle than smaller terrier types. You should see the delicacy with which my dog will liberate a piece of toast from a toddler. She LOVES toddlers. However, I have a friend with a lab the same age as my dog that would be considerably less gentle. Its her personality, not just training- some dogs are definitely more boisterous by nature. the personality bit is soo very true... leo would not be gentle with any small child with food he would smother them with licks and wash the whole child not just the face! :D on lead he has been known to try it...as they smell so goood! none of us are there. its seems a personality clash....the poster may not have hawk eyes to watch both a child and a dog. i would not have.... my child was a rubbish sleeper at times and if tired your not as sharp as you need to be. only a mum knows what is best for her child. most average people find it tough to manage a large full on big dog without a small child in the mix. not blaming anyone one or any breed here. 30kg of raw exciotment (which leo often is) is far too much for my mother in law to have even to baby sit. she is very doggie and a bit offended i won't leave him with her, but i worry if he were to jump on the lead at the wrong time..... she could be hurt. he used to jump up onto people but does not now. also another reason why you would not leave him with an older lady. in saying that there is nothing wrong with her health or fittness, but i feel he is far to ott to leave with just any one. to quote kai..... it is not easy..... takes a huge amount of organisation and time.

sorry chew sometimes i have trouble making my stuff read like it would if you talk... to some one. so sorry to have caused offence. the poster has a small child very time consuming... and a very time consuming dog.... neither it seems to be working out.... the poster seems to be saying that. big dogs and small children do mix, but there are some special ones out there and they are born and trained.... but the right one need to be found. which i feel in this case the whole thing family and dog are not really suited. sounds like this one may not be the "one"... the right one will be right... no matter what the breed or size. just speaking from personal experince i found one child's mess and one small dog more than enough to cope with when my child was pre school and i was not even working much. i waited because i felt it was best for my child.....

omg a very small child and a large dog......never a great mix. :D sorry dog should be returned today... do not even look back. DO NOT FEEL regret. i have waited 20 years to get a dally... as i wanted children. now my when my child turned 11 it was time to get a larger dog...hence we got leo. not trying to be rude, but try a smarter smaller breed like a jack russell or a foxie... they love walks but can get all lazy too. maybe with young kids rescue is not for you either, they often come with "issues" hence they ended up there in the first place. i think even a whimpet would be able to knock over a toddler. you need a dog smaller than the children. maybe go to so shows and see what appeals. good luck with your dog hunting. according to this forum i should only have pet oranges, but hell we have four dogs don't let the nasty pasties get you down.

was he a different dog at the foster house? my instincts (even if you rehome him it would not be your fault) would be stress = boundless energy and feeling unsure... but having puppy excitoment thrown into the mix as well. is there a park really close by.... like a 10min walk? or can you take him by car to an area where he could run free.... and fetch (we have a ball thrower as my arm is not a long enough throw). even working dogs will settle with a short run. maybe walks are not enough. another suggestion can you get help from the obedience person in the form of tution one on one? when leo get too much the best thing i did was buy a large crate..... and in there he goes. OH would not let me buy it but i wish i had done it sooner. he was getting beaten up by my jrt! nasty swf...(small white and fercous) this may sound pushy but you do sound very attached to the dog. you need to be very sure or you might always regret your decision.

does he fetch? leo our dally won't fetch but with 3 others who do.... often throwing the ball and a few mad runs thru the day is enough to get them by. i don't exercise him formally as i don't have time. often customers will throw the ball and the get a few mad dashes that way. he also does tricks so we often do those and he gets a huge rewards pats food etc. he also comes outside with me and the horses and just wanders about sniffing smells. just another thought..... is he less... full on than the day you got him? i have found (just me tho) that stressed dogs will want to pace or run and have boundless energy. when they settle they don't have so much energy it seems to take awhile to adjust like a few weeks. leo took a couple of weeks to calm and accept his new home. our place was his third home, he does tend to be more sensitive. i remeber at the time... being so destressed re his pacing and being a pain....... for the first weekend..... i thought i had made a huge mistake. now however he is MY dog... totally mine. he tolerates the other humans in this house....... but will walk away or over the top of them to please me... even to the point a dog that is terrified of heights... he will climb the small step ladder for me! just my thoughts.... we always seem to get given other peoples unwanteds.... so plenty have passed by this way.

What Quirky, Cute & Funny Things Does Your Dog Do?
voloclydes replied to Baileys mum's topic in General Dog Discussion
well leo's fave trick he taugh him self was while i am on the puter he will nuzzle under my elbow with the same sort of nuzzle you would expect from a puppy...in a litter. he then gets under your elbow and sort of bumps it... as he is large it flips your hand into his armpit for a scratch and a pat. only too me tho... very spesh. he will do it mutliple times..... so dumbmatians eat ya hearts out.... not so bad for a breed that has reputation for being not so smart! i taught him the word for paws now i can ask him to do anything with them... if i direct... although he does try to be very tactle with them almost like hands..... which i have not taught him. -
maybe he thought he should keep it simple for you guys to understand some of us don't 'splain ourselves well. that doesn't mean his intent was bad.
-
janba of course he was dodgy.... he was an old man....they are all dodgy.... old people are! he was embarrassed.....who would not be asking stangers for help... he was out early..... all dodgy folk get up early....... i love this thread absolutely priceless. for all you lot know he might have been desperate... and thought as you had a love of dogs in common you would understand..... i love how you only have one side, which may not be all the facts and yet you are taking the mick out of what might have been a very nice old guy!

does anyone know where to get one of the sporn collars? leo ate his halti..... which worked well. but if i have to replace it a lady sugested it.... as better for leo.

Never Seen So Many Purebreds In Public In My Life.
voloclydes replied to pixie_meg's topic in General Dog Discussion
just my 2cents worth mind..... i think pb dogs in cities are becoming a fashion statement... the country areas... people often have lower incomes and can't see why a free dog should be des sexed, males especially. when folks are tight for money they don't see the need. -
lets see we have 2 jrts.... one has no teeth from fetching his ball..... and carrying it endlessly. he now has a basket ball which he has now worn off all the fur off his legs. if you say where is the mouse? he will tear the house apart! the other jrt will hunt the cat endlessly.... he won't fetch....he only plays tug with the 'matian. the 'matian only plays tug but might hunt the cat when said cat is asleep in case it attacks back..... oh well shows how different our lot are!

Poll: Have You Ever Used The Report Button
voloclydes replied to sandgrubber's topic in General Dog Discussion
never i recon... if you want to get into a slanging match or a discussion take it on the chin... i read every thing with positive tone anyhow. some times i think hell how can you judge anothers decision if you are not there nor walking in there shoes. 2 lines typed here may not give all the facts! -
wow he so is another leo... he did not know how to play perriod with humans. he learned tug first day but the dogs took a while....he was too rough.... he plays with the one his age but not the older one, who will still take his head off at the shoulders.

the weirdest dog.... i ever saw is a kelpie cross... corgi.... face of the kelpie, legs of corgi, almost the body of kelpie... and a corgi tail jammed on the end.... :D .

:) :) :D :D now i better explain all those above... in the country castrating the lambs is called marking..... so needless to say i was wondering why? but upon reading it... i would not be amused being wee'd on... at the dog beach at christmas i did have it happen. they were all in a comp... who could mark higher, bigger, better and the like... i was not really looking and next thing i got marked... but they had been getting closer and closer just i had not really noticed. it was the strange dog, but an old one. i gave him the benefit that maybe he miss q'd but did not let him get close enough to find out. after that.

if you guys can't get the small book called plaits round and flats... you can buy a big hard cover version at most saddleries... called bush leather work, by ron edwards... it has 12 of his books in it. the secret plait one has instructions for fancy collars. and the lacing can be used on collars to decorate. when i bought the book it was only the same as buying a few of his books but the tricks in each book was much better value in the large one. you might never use the bit about lining a stock saddle but there are technics in it... which are great and useful else where.

Looking For Places To Stop Along The Way
voloclydes replied to claireybell's topic in General Dog Discussion
no help with where your going, but we just stop where ever. we look for a nice spot with human loos or a servo... and pick up anything left behind. was very surprised to see at cann river servo a water bowl (doggie one) under the aircon spout so always fresh. doggies thought it marvelous. we often travel with caravan so take ice cream contianers for water bowls. we take 4 dogies. they mostly sleep so unless we are stopping for a long time they don't get a run as such. never seems to bother them. hell leo even snores and dreams in the truck! ;) ;) last time was snowy mountains to sale.... 7hours with a 15min break at cann river. -
Where Will Your Next Dog Come From
voloclydes replied to poodlefan's topic in General Dog Discussion
our next one will more than likely come the way our last 4 or so did.... someone who is fed up with their one year old terrorist, who knows us a little and how well our dogs get looked after will almost dump there beloved fido on us. last 2 jrt had papers which i was shown when they got dog( at that point i had little interst and took no notice)..... but never had said papers or details when we were given said doggie. leo is the only doggie i went out and searched for and got. he was a mature terrorist also... who was for sale in the trading post, bought sight unseen. i paid for him upfront and colllected him... 2 weeks later. he would have been dump had we not bought him. assuming no one else wanted a hyper dally with a kidney infection who pee'd constantly like a pup, pulled lioke a train on lead, nill training or manners! i think they would have been hard pressed to give him away locally. -
i have to agree how true is that 99.5 %rule.... so scarey it's not funny. janaba..... resuce that poor 'matian.... it's having too much fun under that pile..... how funny is it that they like to play pile ups.... the 12 cannot be discouraged.... great that the dog loves it too.
-
we have waveless water beds... the small dogs hardly make a wave. the big dog however seems to get more waves... and get wave sick. he gets off quickly.

giggles my OH has a leather couch like that( i could show him that pic, i think heart attack material).... lets just say i am lucky to be allowed to sit on it... with shoes on my feet. the dogs not a chance hence the $30.00 one out on the sun veranda. leos crate takes up a lot of floor space in my lounge room, as he's too precious, cold, special to sleep out on any old veranda...
-
when we are all here no doggie is allowed on the couch. and in winter they don't want to they like prime real estate in font of the fire. the pic has been one we have been trying to capture for awhile... but have never quiet cracked it. last night all of them sleepy and snuggley they all cuddled up... very cutesy... i thought the lounge delimer in here would have been bigger than it is....
-
i have to confess this couch has a brown atecy pattern on it... cost $30.00 from a motel refurbishement..... and it has a purple sheet on it....as it's the OH"S house and they are only alllowed on that couch... but my house... this was in the dally thread....
-
so where do the humans in your house sit.... exhibit a ....... no room here....
