Tried to post this topic in Breed forum but it wouldnt let me so here will have to do. My partner and I are thinking of fostering a greyhound. We manage a dairy farm, our house section is not fenced. We have a large 6 bedroom old house. The foster dog can be inside most of the time and exercised on a lead or long lead. Other animals in residence are a Fearless Cat, Kelpie, Daisy the cow and her now quite large adopted calf who thinks it a dog. Would be interested in any advice from those of you that have fostered greyhounds. PS I have fostered other breeds in the past, have worked in kennels and done voluteer work for SPCA in NZ so have a bit of expereince with dogs, just not with greyhounds.

At the end of the day its the councils job to educate people. They should occasionly visit the park and issue a few fines. Word would soon get out. What do we pay registration for? I worked one summer for the council in Whangarei NZ doing the beach patrol for dogs on beach during the hours that they were banned. I was mainly there to educate people but had a book to write fines if need be. I didnt give one fine out but talked to a lot of dog owners and everyone soon got the message in a nice way. -
I would wait till your beagle puppy is at least 18 months. Enjoy having one pup. IMO you will establish yourself as the leader and be the instigator of the pups fun. When you have two pups they often will play with each other and ignore you. As poodlefan said get the same breed or close to.

Don't Know How Vets And Vet Nurses Do It
kelpiekaye replied to jr_inoz's topic in General Dog Discussion
The vet I had at Orbost when I lost Bo to paralysis tick were amazing. When I went to pick up her body they had her all wrapped up in her bed with flowers. I was so upset at the time I couldnt speak. The vet sent me a card about a week later with a letter. It was sometime before I could bring myself round to going in and thanking them. They were great. -
If You Show Or Trial Your Dog
kelpiekaye replied to SkySoaringMagpie's topic in General Dog Discussion
All shows, agility etc are on weekends and I work every weekend so as much as I would like to be involved in a club I cant. Boy would I love to take my girl to agility and I would volunteer to help on event days. -
Of course you could always just buy a station wagon, have rear metal gates installed and leave the rear door up. Thats the set up I had and it was great for dog shows, shopping etc. I could padlock it shut and my dogs didnt bark or carry-on at passerbys.

In NZ the SPCA will come and break into car to get dogs out. I think they have to have the police present too. I remember once in Whangarei they broke a window of the car to find it was a stuffed dog.

When I first came to Australia with my Kelpie "Bo" we traveled in a van right round Australia for a year. I had a book "Traveling with a Dog" and planned ahead as much as possible. I didnt reallly have a problem finding dog friendly caravan parks except in Broome (only one and its out off town a bit) and Between Broome and Perth. The dog friendly parks are better anyway, much nicer people IMHO. Being on my own I was guilty of tying my dog up either to my van or outside shops while I got groceries etc. NZ is probably even worse with No Dog Rules

Thanks. They are great mates. Normaly the cat "Horse" that starts it though.

Thats very interesting. I was talking to a guy last night who recently visited Holland. He was shocked to see dogs going everywhere with their owners and being acepted. It was all just normal. Wish it was the same here.

taken from HERE On the purely practical.... trying to keep a 90kg cool in Australia could be a bit tricky!! Those coats are meant for snow and blizzards :D Click ->AMAZING DOGS!! but definitely not something I would want ! Scary dog. Wow. Dont think anyone needs a dog like that now days....... That's a little narrow minded....try telling that to the people who's livelyhood depends on their stock, without these dogs to protect their sole source of Income who else Is going to help them They are a magnificent breed, and while I believe they are just "too much" dog for here In Australia, they were bred for a purpose, and they fulfill It well. Some people need to step outside the box (Australia), obviously the threats to livestock here, does not compare to overseas, and that's why they're needed I am sure they have their place where they are needed and they look like a magnificant animal but do we really need them here? Its all very well saying that in the right hands they can be managed, but how often do dogs get into the wrong hands and make it harder for all dog owners. It would worry me sick owning a dog with such potential to do harm.

All good advice. I havnt got anything to add except this joke I read in a xmas cracker. Paddy and his wife were sick of the neighbours dog barking all night so one sleepless night Paddy stormed out of the house in the wee hours. After a little while he returned and his wife asked him " what did ye do?" Paddy replied "Ive tied the dog up in our back yard, so I did. Lets see how they like it" Sorry, I thought this was

Beagles- What Do You Like About Them
kelpiekaye replied to heroeswit's topic in General Dog Discussion
Sorry kelpiekaye Disagree completely. My dog could cross a four lane road, from the other side of the road, and stop on command at the centre of the road. As I say if it was a Beagle I take my hat off to you. -

Awesome photos. Know nothing about training water rescue but my first dog, a GSD X Hunterway/Lab used to pull me out of the sea by my swimwear.
