  1. This is a add in the livestock dept of my local paper. It is in every week. AA WANTED Quality puppies, top prices paid, pick up at 6-7 weeks. Phone #!#&* How do you stop people like this? Anyone that has a unwanted litter has got a easy out and can get paid and I guess people would breed for him too. What does AA mean??
  2. I have a lot of time for Border Terriers. Great dogs IMHO
  3. The owner should grow up, take responsibility and have his dogs pts. As poodlefan said the dog will be pts and the man will get some more dogs to cause havoc with. RIP little dogs
  4. Ive always trained my dogs that a stay is just that and theyre not to move until I return. Im not good at stepping off with the right foot. In agility I use wait and I expect the the dog to wait until I give them the next instruction.I dont even think about which leg Im stepping off, dont have time. I use wait a lot when my dog is working on farm. I expect her to stop what shes doing until next command. Im usually on a bike so no feet to worry about.
  5. My dogs sleep outside every night. They have good kennels and bedding and are probably warmer than me. If you saw the old farm house we live in you would understand why
  6. I believe they can be protective. I once had to look after a Newfie who attacked his owner and was being rehomed. The dogs owners were very soft and treated him like baby, then one day the dog went to lift his leg on the couch and the owner gave him a kick in the bum, the dog turned on him and chased owner through house and bit the mans arm quite badly. The dog was fine while we had him at the kennels but we did warn potential owners why he was being rehomed as the owners did not tell them. It all ended well, experienced Newfie owners took him on and never had a problem. I realise this was not protective behaviour, just a big strong dog with no rules being spoilt. I think all breeds of dogs can be protective and they know when to be.
  7. Love this shot PF Same here. Great post Poodlefan
  8. 4 dogs, excellent. That would keep you busy. Yes you dont have to do anything with your dog, but I couldnt imagine not.......
  9. I had a 4kg ETT that had a front leg amputated due to a broken shoulder when he was young. He had a great life and did everything the other dogs did.
  10. I was going to say bio-oil too. I have used it myself, not in the quest for perfect skin, was recommended to me to use for some scarring on my face. It keeps the scar area flexible and the vit E helps the skin repair. Rubbing the oil in will help too.
  11. They can work for some animals. You can try a simple version with either a bandage wrapped in a figure 8 (in front of chest, over shoulders, then under belly and over lower back if still length) or a small t-shirt that fits snug (tie bottom of shirt in a knot to take up slack around belly). I have found the majority of animals with sound phobias often have issues being touched (can be subtle) around the back end or mouth. Doing TTouch work around the body can help reduce this. A lot of this is about helping the animal improve their self awareness which tends to not exhist much when they are in a manic state. Your seeing the relaxation from this when you put the harness on. Thanks for your reply. I will try the bandage next thunderstorm.
  12. I dont keep notes but thats probably a good idea.
  13. I have had dogs since I was a kid and am now 40 something I used to train my dogs very seriously but the more dogs I have had the more relaxed about it I have become. The end outcome is usually the same, all my dogs have been a pleasure to have and Ive always involved them in my day today activities. I think that being a bit more relaxed about training has maybe let their character develop a bit more. I probably have more fun with them now. What do others feel about their training as time goes by?
  14. I have just read Temple Grandin's book, Making Animals Happy. In it she mentions the use of pressure for a calming effect. I found that interesting as just putting a harness on my dog seems to calm her down a bit. Then in a another post I see a link to Thundershirts. Has anyone tried them? Do they work? My girl reacts to thunder by barking, growling and running around like a maniac. I usually just bring her inside and dont make a big deal out of it.
  15. Im going outside to give my dogs a big hug. That was too sad.
  16. Well written. Nice to see such a positive post. Pups are cool and so are the dogs they grow into
  17. A 5 month old gsd is still a baby and in my experience with gsd they are a vocal breed. It sounds like the dog is frightened and feels threatened when approaced by another dog. Maybe the owner is sending nervous vibes down the lead when other dogs approach so dog dosnt feel leadership coming from owner. May explain why dog is fine when beside someone else. Maybe try a different trainer. Triangle of Temptation is good too. I wouldnt put the dog in situations where it feels threatened and reacts badly, keep at a safe distance and build up confidence before allowing close contact. Is dog going through a fear period??????
  18. Yep thats cheap. Will have a look. Thanks for tip.
  19. Cheers, will try to stay up for that. Dont laugh, Im a dairy farmer
