  1. Maybe use a long rope and when you feel a bit more confident let the end go. Make your self more fun than the other dogs, another thing that has worked for me is if my dog dosnt respond to my call I run in the opposite direction and they usually follow. Perhaps try these things in a fenced dog park first. Good luck.
  2. Why? If I see a muzzled dog, I will keep my distance as well.. I know what it is like to walk a DA dog..and also to be on the receiving end of an attack by one..so I keep my dog out of reach, for safety, and to also remove the target to give the dog's owner a break.... I thought it strange that they let their dogs run up to a large leashed dog but panicked when he had a muzzle on and couldnt do a thing to their dog.
  3. I once owned a Rotty that was DA. I had a muzzle for him, it was made of leather and was great. He could drink, pant etc with no discomfort and whats more he knew he couldnt bite dogs with it on so just ignored them. He was like your guy and great with people but did not like other peoples dog rushing him when we were out on walks. Once I started muzzling him people kept their dogs away. Strange people.
  4. I have a Red Kelpie Bitch "Ruby" from show breeding and all she wants to do is work, lucky we are on a farm so she can and she is pretty handy to have around. We also have a working Kelpie, Black an Tan, "Aussie" who would rather lie in his kennel. He was a rescue so we dont know his history but we have had him since he was about 5 Months and he has all the same oportunities as Ruby. I think some dogs have it and some dont. Im sure theres lots of dogs from working breeding that just dont have the desire that good working dogs have.
  5. The point of this topic by top dog was to ask for support to put pressure on council to do something about puppy farms. Lets stick to the topic. We all care about other animals but you cant fix the world all at once. As we are dog lovers we are trying to help dogs.
  6. Hi toy dog, I live in the Wellington Shire and have seen one of the puppy farms just out of Heyfield and I will do all I can to help. PM me if you would like. Cheers Kaye
  7. Yep thats the sort of thing, my kelpie in NZ wore one in the orchard we worked in. I think I may have got it from a $2 shop now you mention it. Thanks
  8. Cheers for that, I googled first and only got life jackets and hi vis for night time. I will have a look at your findings.
  9. Just wondering if anyone knows where I can get a high vis coat for my kelpie so she can be seen when we are driving cattle on roads during day. Cheers Kaye
  10. He is probably going do something even worse next time if thats possible. Im sure that its been researched that children that do acts of cruelty to animals go on to do far worse acts to other animals and people. This man should be put where he cant do more harm. God help us and this world we live in..
  11. I have found that dogs that are brought up with cats are good with their own cats, but beware other trespassing cats. I had a rotty that killed my neighbours cat, was good with my cat and suprised the hell out off me when I found him sleeping with a stray kitten in his bed one morning. So basicly if the cat was afraid of him and ran his prey drive kicked in. If the cat showed no fear it was safe.
  12. Dont all dogs over the age of three months have to be registered?? Are puppy farmers excempt? It gives me th sh#*ts that the rules are in place but not enforsed and we just keep making more rules to penalise responsible owners and breeders and ignored by the puppy farms and BYB
  13. Yes Ruby is a busy dog. If we're not working moving cows and shes not tied up...... theres birds to chase, toys to find, cat to play with, flies to chase, etc etc etc.
  14. Are you talking about Best Friend Holiday Retreat in South Gippsland? If you are its a great place to take your dogs. You can take your own caravan or rent one of their cabins. One of the rules is your dog must sleep inside with you. Hope this helps. All check out Pet Friendly Accomodation in important topics, General Discussion.
  15. Am trying to pm you re question on MDBA, join now.
  16. Most of time off lead on farm on a flat lead if in town which is a rare occurance. I actually prefer a round lead but havnt found one of good quality, right lenghth and size. Easier on the hand.
  17. Goodluck, I reckon you can do it. At least Myrtles only little, you will sort it..I think poodlefans advise was sound.
  18. Thankyou. I will check them out
  19. In our house its not the two dogs that wreck things, its the BLOODY CAT. Mainly electrical things -4 phone chargers -1 mobile phone and cover -straps on bag -cords hanging out of clothing -feather doona and other various bits and pieces. God give me strength.......
  20. Has anyone come across a dog blanket thats artifical wool that lets moisture through but stay dry. We used to use them in whelping box, they washed and lasted well. When pups went to their new home we cut the blanket and sent a piece with them. They make a great dog blanket. Cant find them on internet.
  21. My mum and dads sheltie had a chop bone stuck across the roof of his mouth once. Dad flicked it out with the handle end of a fork. Worked well. Also my first day working a my friends Boarding Kennels, one of her young Shepherds got a marrow bone stuck right round her bottom jaw behind her main teeth. I had to use a hacksaw blade to cut it off. It is a bit scary.
  22. Poodlefan is right. why spend mega bucks. Baby socks and tape would do the trick, to be sure, to be sure........
  23. Google it. Heaps of info. For scouring animals. Have you got a sick one???
