  1. and, note: oral meds may not work fast enough ,if the dog has a severe reaction Your quite correct and in allergy it often isn't the first exposure that is problematic, it's the second, third etc. If oops when he does this again it will be antihistamine straight away. Thanks for all the helpful info folks I really appreciate it. His face is less swollen now, hes a bit drowsy and cruising for some mischief
  2. Has to be cheaper than the $73 !!! In saying that I would spend anything it took if I had to.
  3. Thanks so much. I just worry because the brachycephalic nature of their heads could really be a problem ( here comes the nurse in me!!!) with airway patency due to the oedema. Fortunately his reaction is local but I am sure "meathead" will do it again so I better get prepared.
  4. Does anyone keep antihistamines on hand for local reactions to bee stings etc? Henry decided to have a play with a bee and of course he got stung in the mouth. Result one 7 month old boxer with a swollen muzzle!!! Trip to the vet for antihistamine. If anyone keeps any at home could they let me know what sort. It might be beneficial if I could get some into him straight away before we head off to the vet. He has a new nickname "meathead"
  5. Hi, Oscar and my white boxer pup met at a DOL meet a little while ago and had a great time , they are about the same age. They both behaved like clowns then and likely the behaviour is the same its just that they are quite a bit bigger now. I am going to do some work with a trainer because Henry seems to have lost his hearing ( selectively) and will do the same as Oscar and pull like a freight train. On the other hand he does an impersonation of an antelope on lead now just to throw me off. I sympathise and seem to have the same issues. I am hoping its a juvenile delinquency issue!!!! Oscar is absolutely gorgeous.
  6. We have a couple of boxers. The young one has just turned 7 months so I guess hes really not a pup anymore ( in chronological terms!!!) Early days were such a readjustment for us and our adult girl (3 1/2 years old, shes the most wonderful dog, pretty much the best either of us has had). The toilet training was the one that got me, many trips in the rain with me in PJ's wellies and holding an umbrella over him so he didnt get wet, I usually was drenched. Its all worth it but as soon as the toilet training is over, the teething has finished, eating patterns established and basic obedience has happened its into the next phase. Juvenile delinquency!!!!! He is so naughty. Nothing is sacred honestly and he knows what is expected. We adore him. He is a gorgeous dog and an absolute clown. Dont think he will ever "grow up" We have our hands full with him but thats our responsibility and we took it on willingly and continue to. Cant imagine not having either of them. I have been told that boxers grow up at 9 1/2 then you get their remaining time as a geriatric dog before they decide to leave you. So my message is enjoy puppyhood, its short lived and delightful because the next step will take you to a whole new zone!! I intend to enjoy that as much Joyce
  7. I am looking for one to suit boxers also ( both white!!!) sounds like we have a similar issue
  8. I have just put my two boxers onto sense-ible harnesses. I am impressed so far, they walk really well on them. I like that I can use their soft collar to clip onto if they get a bit "active" during the walk or if I am sure that they are calm I can just clip onto the harness itself. Wil give them a month to see how we go.
  9. Hi Teal, Congratulations on getting Dougall. I to am a boxer owner and they are high activity dogs who are very social. Its a great time to start teaching him. The crate idea is great and you can move it around. Make a secure area in your yard for him to stay during the day where he is warm and safe. He will need lots to do while he is alone and I certainly wouldnt give him run of the house!! Get into a puppy school or obedience program where you will get advice on all of those puppy issues. As far as the mouthing goes you will need to get that stopped. Smacking wont help it just encourages as it may be seen as attention to the behaviour. Mouthing is normal in a litter he just needs to know its not appropriate to do it to you or anyone else. There are many ways to manage it. Get some help with obedience, its worth it. They are wonderful dogs. There is a boxer thread on DOL if you are interested. Good luck with him and I am sure people would love to see photos.
  10. Hope Valley Meat Grand Junction Rd, Hope Valley The butcher is in a group of shops near the corner of Valley Road and Grand Junction Rd. The people there are great and are happy to help with anything you need. Great prices and as I am a bit nervous about feeding my dogs chicken frames, they mince them for me.
  11. Well I have just cooked up tiny bits of liver and kidney for training. OMG the smell is rank. Thank heavens its in the freezer now. So off I go with a bag with tiny bits of kidney, liver, cheese, coles sausage, kabanos and lovely orange glazed Barossa ham. Honestly I dont know what was worse, cooking the stuff or cutting it into teeny weeny bits. The dog thinks is fantastic !!!!
  12. Their eyes are clear, no conjunctival damage or ulceration, no evidence of entropion according to the vet when he checked last time. Sometimes there is no discharge, it varies on a day to day basis. Wil be interesting to see if it increases in the spring. Gab is due for her annual health check etc so young Henry will accompany her.
  13. Its pale yellow in colour. Nice and thick "YUCK"
  14. Hi, we have just started training our 5 month boxer at formal classes. We have been concentrating on his "manners" till now and have had to wait for a slot in this class. He is pretty good, he sits, drops, doesnt eat till told, the jumping is reducing and he doesnt mouth any more. Lead work was a nightmare. Our other adult boxer is fantastic to walk, we use a check chain on her. We tried a variety of things with her and this was the best. I know some people dont like them but it works for her. As Henry is only 5 months and a lean lad there is no way he is suitable for a check chain so soft collar has been his method till now. he pulled and pulled all through class and I was getting really annoyed with him He was fitted for a SENSE-ible harness at his first lesson and he is a different dog on lead. He walks beautifully strutting is stuff right next to me. This is a training tool only but I am impressed so far. Just shows that they are all different and what works for one may not work for the other. You dont know till you try. I agree with the comment regarding technique, I have had to examine how I wallk them and look to see if I was the cause. Going to be interesting walking the two of them now!!
  15. I am looking for advice on my boxers eyes. They have what we call "eye snot" I know it sounds disgusting and actually it is!!! We have had them seen by the vet to make sure that dont have any infection and the vet said they have hayfever or allergies. They have an ointment to use when it gets really revolting but its steroid based and I am not keen to frequently use steroid based product in their eyes. Its fine to do it for short periods but not on a regular basis. Its worse when they wake in the morning and its not every day. Part of their routine is to have their eyes cleaned daily because they are white and it reduces tear stains. They are cleaned just with a saline solution. So I am looking for some advice from anyone who has had a similar experience with eye snot!!! Cheers Joyce
  16. I have been wondering about feeding whole fish!! Mine get a can of sardines once or twice a week and love them. I am wussy and give them fillets although raw. Joyce
  17. Both our boxers are washed and conditioned with Aloveen. Not only great for their short coats but seems to help with any dry skin.
  18. Can anyone tell me if they have used classes in North East or Eastern suburbs of Adelaide? Currently considering Adelaide Pet Dog training at Campbelltown, has anyone used this group? Joyce
