Bad Wheezing / Snorting Sound
mrs tornsocks replied to mrs tornsocks's topic in General Dog Discussion
Thanks everyone, all this info has made me feel alot better, did some googling as well (along with vid & link, ta) -- and everything seems to fit the reverse sneeze diagnosis. He's still happy, no discharge from nose etc. I love DOL !! -
Bad Wheezing / Snorting Sound
mrs tornsocks replied to mrs tornsocks's topic in General Dog Discussion
Yes, seems a little unusual for a lab (and he's got a longish nose for his breed). He's had a few more snorty/mucus noises happening since I posted, with his eyes a little bit weepy seems like he's got a bit of an infection. The reverse sneezes are totally out of the blue though. We just went for a little walk to the shops and he was happy, but at one point just stopped dead and did the sneezes; it seems to take his whole body over --- his back legs drop down slightly and you can see it down through his ribs and tummy. Again, back to slothing and sleeping now -- gobbled up all his brekky and he's drinking his honey water. He is very lethargic, but then he is always lethargic after a couple of days at the kennels or with other doggies; he's such a bouncy boy. -
Bad Wheezing / Snorting Sound

Thank you for describing it so much better than I did -- two words instead of 20. We are going out for most of the day without him so I was a little concerned. He's sleeping happily now but he's never done anything like this before so I have no idea what it could be. -
Archie (10 mnth old lab) has woken up this morning making an erratic wheezing-type sound. It's not constant --- he has a little 'attack' every now and then, it's like something is caught in a passage round his nose or throat. He keeps his mouth closed and kind of snorts uncontrollably a few times with his neck sticking out, standing still. He did this two or three times in a row when he woke up and then once or twice since (so all up about 6 times in the past 30 mins). He did nothing but come out of his 'bedroom' (the laundry), go out for wees and come back inside. I double checked the laundry, there's nothing he could have got into, I make sure everything is put away. Tail is wagging, he's otherwise happy. He's had a small eye infection which the vet gave him ointment for. Any ideas ? Now he's just lying down fine, and occassionally he breathes like he has mucus but only every so often -- he brought his toy over for plays earlier and jumped up on the bed per her normal good morning routine. ETA, he's been in the kennels for past 3 days, came home yesterday arvo with no problems presenting until this morning. He's had KC vacc, although I seem to recall that isn't always a guarantee.

omg, he is just gorgeous. Little brown babies are the best.

I'm sorry, I need to challenge you here. I have never been able to successfully pick up my boy's poo if he ever does it in the shallow water; it just disintegrates in attempts to pick it up. Can you really scoop it up ??????
-
Hi MAO You poor things ! Sorry to hear that. I am assuming the infection is IN the eye ? Archie has a little bit of dermatitis to the side of his eye so I don't need to put it in which makes it easier. I just put it on my finger. I am no expert, however I try to do it when he's tuckered out (ie lying down or asleep and wake him up) --- and it could be worth trying to give him a treat when you put it in. I tell Archie to 'stay' even if he's lying down as he now associates that command with being still so it helps. Vet probably mentioned, but careful not to let the metal tip of the ointment touch his eye as it will also become infected. A cotton bud is another option.

I wouldn't recommend necks/wings for a Labrador as they're small enough for her to swallow whole. I've got a Goldie that did this (only once ), so now I give him frames which he can't eat in one gulp. agree. Although they look big enough (bigger than chook equivalent), Archie our lab tried to swallow turkey neck whole. He didn't get a chance to succeed as I took it away and gave the bag to my friend with swf, who takes days to get through them ;)

Our lab's had chicken frames since he was about 5 months old. Loves 'em (he's now 9 months). When he was younger, I had a few minor freak outs with chook necks and wings (tried to gobble them) so tried frames to help him 'learn' to chew them up, it was the best thing I ever did. I also occasionally feed him turkey legs. I chop off a decent amount of the meet and freeze it for very special treats, and give him the leg, he loves that too, they're about $6-7 for two @ woolies. Other than that, brisket bones are good and nice and soft.

Yep ! You are being told by puppy he prefers your bed -- but stay strong !!! Do you have a quiet radio you can play ? How long have you had him and has he been crate trained?

Bad Behaviour Around New Boyfriend
mrs tornsocks replied to peigirl's topic in General Dog Discussion
As a matter of interest, how do you reckon BF feels about having dogs in the bedroom ? Clearly, he needs to love what you love --- I just wonder if considering having them sleep elsewhere is an option ? just asking --- and this is from someone who lets doggie sleep on our bed when OH is away -

What everyone said -- blankie or toy from litter (might want to ask breeder to put this with litter now so scent is on the article), clock wrapped in blanket to replicate heartbeat of mummy, soft radio to keep him company. We wanted our pup to sleep in the laundry, and we crated him, but we started him next to the bed. After about a week, moved him out a few metres at a time, until we moved the crate all the way down the hallway to the laundry. So he went from next to bed, to doorway of our bedroom, to a couple of metres outside where he could still see us, and after about 2 weeks, to the laundry by himself. I def think he'll tend to cry less next to you but do NOT go to him every time and only get him out if you think it's toilet time. When you do let him out, do the business quietly and with minimal fuss. We also set an alarm for ourselves to wake him up for toilet, every few hours. Philosophy was, he's gonna wake up anyway, we may as well try and plan it to suit us as best we can. I think we woke up twice during the night for first week, then once until about 14-15 weeks, then he slept through. Good luck !!! Puppies are the best !!!!!

As an owner of one lab (now 9 months), many things to consider if you're getting one, let alone two. Of course, all puppies are work, but labs are alot of work. They respond wonderfully to training as they're very food driven, but without the right attention, they can be very challenging. What is your personal /home situation in terms of raising two puppies ? (ie are you at home, or could you be at home in the early days )? Children ? other family members ?

Yet Another Humping Question
mrs tornsocks replied to mrs tornsocks's topic in General Dog Discussion
ok, well, if we're gonna get to nitty gritty, I just had a disagreement with OH as to whether this could/would actually happen. He said there's no way but I figured if he really kept going, it's more than likely he'd ejaculate. Am I right ? Eeeeeewwwwwwwww. -
Yet Another Humping Question
mrs tornsocks replied to mrs tornsocks's topic in General Dog Discussion
I believe we humans call it "masturbation" and it's a pretty darned hot looking pillow!!! It's a 'feel good' thing. Yup, that's about the short and tall of it My young Goldie (RIP) used to hump his favourite soft toy (that he used to seek out from all the other soft toys) and suck on it - he would take it to bed with him every night! After dinner at night, this same dog would go and hump his bed in the bedroom - every night without fail well, he does love going to sleep on it as well, when it's time to go to bed and he's not in his crate, he curls up very happily on it. -
Yet Another Humping Question
mrs tornsocks replied to mrs tornsocks's topic in General Dog Discussion
Well, it's been bigger than him up until now I guess, they're different shapes but it's probably the biggest thing he can easily move around and hump. Is an interesting theory amypie, I like that. As for 5 minutes, his pink bits are actually rarely out during humping so wouldn't get stuck ... and it's not 5 minutes non-stop, he jumps around and plays with pillow as well. We never really though of it as 'bad' enough to stop him. -
Yet Another Humping Question
mrs tornsocks replied to mrs tornsocks's topic in General Dog Discussion
hah !! Yes, fit for our little king !! It's from ikea... -
Realise there have been alot of threads about humping and what it means etc Our entire (soon to be de-sexed) 9 month old lab drags his bed pillow out of the laundry, down the hallway or into the loungeroom and humps it for 5 minutes or so. He gets it into his mouth, and drags it into 'position', then goes about his biz. Just interested to know if there's any explanation as to why this red pillow is his 'victim' ? said pillow .... hehe
-
Hi guys Mrs Lazy bones here -- rather than go through the thread can someone send me the link to dyzney's cool gear ? thanks !
-
the things we say .... Archie our 9 month old lab has had similar small amount of discharge from his pee pee/wahzoo/pecker/weiner; I think it is lubricant but maybe it's a bit of his special love potion I dunno. There doens't seem to be any specific reason or time for this to happen, it just does. He is going in very soon to be de-sexed, but I am interested to know if this is less prevalent in de-sexed boys or not ?

funnily enough, there was a bit of a chat in lab forum re PP today --- claims taking FOREVER to be paid. I have insurance with them and I actually just realised - I have never received any paperwork at all, of course they take my direct debit out. Good reminder to follow up, I hope you can sort the issues MD.

Yes I do go to obedience classes, they say I must keep on with the gentle leader. MM, you probably know this but some clubs won't allow gentle leaders. eg. the obedience club near us (I have never been) will not allow them. I know this because we have an old lady in our street that owns a lovely youngish goldie -- however she is just too weak to hold him so she uses a halti. Is it worth calling around a few clubs, or reaching out to a few WA DOLers and asking of clubs that won't allow them as a regular option ? I am presuming this is because they prefer to teach the 'right' way to walk without needing a halti. It's a tough one, because you want to NOT use it but in the interim it's impossible to walk him. It is a hard one and at this stage in the game I dont really have the money to do personal training , I am looking for a job so maybe once I get one I can look at this option. I am meeting a friend at the park tomorrow night and we are going to work with him a bit. yes, that's why perhaps a different club for a while might help ? Just a thought. I'm sure with lots of practice and some experienced guidance he will get better.
