Wow your dogs are morning dogs, Deakin sleeps outside so that might help and watson who currenty spends his nights in the main bathroom generally will get a toilet break around 5 when someone leaves for work but he goes back to sleep well and doesn't make a sound untill the rest of the house starts rising and neither get a walk in the morning unless they are going to be left alone for the rest of the day. No Tv watching dogs here though when deakin was a puppy and that torchwood episodes about the children and aliens was on I was watching it late at night and the first few times the children went crazy deakin would start up a sort of howl barkything and get right up close to the tv neither dog here gets flea treatment as I was told its rare for a dog to get fleas in canberra and so far our previous dog never had fleas, deakin hasn't had a flea and neither he nor Watson will get them Hi Foxyboi I must have missed your first post as my computer has gone spaz but what breed is Ike and how old? pictures?

Thanks for the welcome everyone Wizzle that beach looks lovely and Genevieve looks like she had fun, baby Genevieve is just too cute especially those really young ones with that speckled nose KTB Deakin was around 17months old when Watson was brought home though it was a bit sudden as although we had been browsing petrescue and the rescue threads on dol for a little while we had only contacted Watsons breeder the week before asking about a future litter and she emailed back stating she had a male puppy from a current litter still avaliable as she hadn't found the right home for him and after the email we sent she thought we could fit that gap and so after a family discussion he was brought home that sunday. We attend obedience classes as deakin has somehow managed to reach novice class and watson starts this sunday, though we go to the companion dog club at symoston as I live southside so it was a toss up between it and tuggeranong as belconnen was a bit to far to drive. KumaAkita We live in tuggeranong so it wouldn't have been us, speaking of seeing around now I am quite sure you attend the bdoc but just checking that you don't go to the one at obediance club at symoston as in puppy class last term there was an akita that looked alot like Kuma

What tricks does your dog do ? He knows a bunch such as shake, high-5, high-10, wave, hands up, bam (play dead), ta-daaa (bow), bubbles, roll over, spin, turn, back, and some others I worked on teaching him tricks for a few reasons, one is as he is a bigish dog some children are a bit wary/frightened of him and while he can drop to make himself smaller I have found they tend to be less wary of him after he has done a trick or two wether it be playing dead, giving kisses or just having waving hello. Another reason that I teach tricks is that it allows me to work at improving my training skills also it is something to do that I find interesting and fun that uses his brain, I like training tricks. Was it something your dog gravitated naturally toward? Some of the tricks he learnt have just evolvled from mistakes from a previous trick such as hands up came from him putting two hands up instead of one when waving, and tall came from hands up when he kept on standing on his hind legs when he did it, so I guess they came more natrually then other tricks and I find he is quicker to teach tricks which involve him using his feet rather then his mouth and as a result more of his tricks involve doing something with his feet rather then his mouth but I still work hard at teaching tricks which involve him using his mouth The older one is now around 17months and is still learning new tricks, so the training started as a pup and will continue on as he ages

Zou is adorable in his little hat and what a great tribute to him. Thanks for the replys they have really great hearing about all the other dogs and helped make the decision so much easier
-
thanks for the replys so far, just wanted some other situations as the only dog I'd met with one eye was in the dog park and I'm not sure if it was the location that made her nervous or the fact that she lost her eye in a dog fight at an older age she jumped and snapped at any dog she didn't notice approaching her blind side, He is around an 8 week old sheltie, he is currently living with the breeders though we will be driving up on sunday to meet him, if we decided on getting him he would be living with an 18 month old labrador

I am currently considering getting a pup that only has one eye. The fear for us as we currently own a dog is that we don't want either dog to suffer because of any incedents caused by the dog being startled becuase of his blind side. While it currently runs around with the breeders other dogs with no fuss I am worried that it might change as it grows older so I was wondering if anybody had a pup that had vision problems from a young age, if so did you find that they started easily when they grew older, is it fair to have them around other dogs or as they had that vision from such a young age they just lived with it like any other dog,

In this instance, you have to leave your dog in a stand stay/wait and walk out to about 3m infront of your dog then command them to drop/down. The dog must then stay in this position while the handler returms to the dog and untill the judge says exercies finished.

"Rambunctious, rumbustious, delinquent dogs become angelic when sitting." - Dr. Ian Dunbar "I talk to him when I'm lonesome like; and I'm sure he understands. When he looks at me so attentively, and gently licks my hands; then he rubs his nose on my tailored clothes, but I never say naught thereat. For the good Lord knows I can buy more clothes, but never a friend like that." - W. Dayton Wedgefarth

My lab was on rc labrador junjor for the first few months we had him as it was reccomend by the breeder, and the people at pet barn but he didn't do well on it so is now on advanced and loving it. But I know another labrador around the same age was on it as well and thrived.

Instead of a heated kennel have you considered a snuggle safe heat pad or something along those lines, they're suposed to be bite resistence and don't have any eletrical cords or hot water to worry about if he does chew it. and for bedding do you have any old towels, or sheets that you can use as cheep bedding to fill his kennel with as that way it doesn't matter if he rips it up.

I don't think we got a card from the vet when our dog got put to sleep due to health reasons but what was a nice suprise was recieving a lovley condonlence card from the dog kennels where we had to cancell a booking due to his sudden passing.

How To Train A Dog To "back Up"?
Primedogs replied to haylz27's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I'm on a laptop and am having problems with the video so not sure what they did, but I taught it roughly the same as kavik, and I'm not sure if my dog was just slow to get it but I found when I started rewarding by chucking the treat behind him he got more enthusastic about it and started walking longer distances backwards -
i can't see them either
-
sorry just been reading and saw the touch thing and need a bit of clarification, when you say build it up do you mean: sit hand touch, drop hand touch then reward or just multiple hand touches all in the same go and then reward if that makes sense
-
here are 2 of my before and afters done on lightroom neither very good but the flower was done quickly just trying to darken it up a bit, and the dog is just me exploring options on lightroom

Name: Deakin Nickname: Princess, and others Breed: Mostly labrador Gender: Male Age: 14months Picture: Where did you get them from? He was bought from a 'breeder' out of the paper How often do you exercise your dog? Everyday in someway or form, attends the dog park a few times a week Do they know any commands? A bunch both obediance and tricks. His most recent tricks are kiss and bam(play dead) Compete in any dog sports? Will hopefully, eventually be competeting in obediance aand will soon have our name down on the waiting list for agility now he is of age Favourite treat: Goes crazy for egg Favourite toy: His toy tyre Funny habits or quirks: A lot but his most annoying is when he ask to go out, you open the door and he situates himself half in half out and refuses to move either way What's their personality like? He is the tiniest bit feral, but is a real cuddle monster when in the mood and is a clown Do they get along well with other dogs? Yes if a bit too boisterus Are they scared of anything? Not really exept large watermelons What training methods do you use? Positive reinforcement? Corrections? A mix of whaterver works but mainly positive
