  1. Hi all As i said in the header, not my dog just after some advice for a mate He has a female entire (is that the right term for a female as well?) staffy x from a BYB which is about 6 months old, unfortunately it has gone after several of there other pets which has not ended well each time. So far a few rabbits and guinea pigs have met there end. The dog has not eaten them but has killed them, tho he does thinks she may have taken a bite out the lastest rabbit since it wasnt whole and now his dog isnt feeling well. He doesnt necessarily want to rehome the dog as he and the kids do like the dog, but he is worried about this behaviour, plus it upsets the kids when they get told there other pets are gone. Extra info The rabbits and guinea pigs are kept in hutches, but the dog works out how to open the door / get inside the hutch. The dog is taken for a walk each day and is kept in a decent size backyard. I dont think it has had any vacinations since leaving the BYB at 8 weeks old. No training besides bits and pieces i have been able to pass along to him (eg sit, no jumping up, nipping etc nothing major tho). He was/is worried this could be a trait of the breed or as result of it being a unknown cross breed. Im not sure on this one as i dont know much about staffies or other breeds than my own (border collie), my brother does a have a staffy but does not show any of these signs and is actually unaware to most things besides his rock collection (the dog collects rocks from the beach and then spends his time at home moving his rocks around in piles). Ive tried using the search function on the forum but didnt really give me any results. just wondering if anyone has any suggestions i can pass on to him to help with the situation. Anyone got any advice (that is helpful only thank you - sorry i know some are very pasionate and there is a few points in this post which will stir some of those passions) but as i said before just in need of some advice i can pass along to him to try and help the situation. Cheers
  2. our bc doesnt mind the rain, bit indifferent at times (ie loves it some days but then others will just sleep til its cleared up) BUT..... at night time if he gets wets when playing or going to do his business he will cry constantly until he gets dried off so he can go to sleep... ordinarily thats okay but at 2am in the morning when all you can hear is constant scratching and crying its abit annoying, so i get up and dry him off and he then curls up and goes to sleep LOL
  3. we have a red male bc (desexed - not that you could tell either way due to the amount of fur lol) anyway since the day we picked him up, every single person who we have ever meet as said 'oh isnt she beautiful' or 'whats her name she is lovely' so based on that, i guess no although i have never owned any other dogs, looked after plenty of them but always took there behaviours to be part of there personality and not a reflection of there gender tho (if that makes sense)
  4. NSW - Hunter Valley Riverwood Downs - http://riverwooddowns.com.au/ we stayed here (before had our pup tho - he actually comes from there tho ) the place is great, plenty of accomodation options, restraunt is awesome, whole atomsphere is very relaxing
  5. LOL my bc puppy is a dirt critic i think, he must taste every dirt he sees, just wants a little mouth full for a taste test and then he is happy
  6. a marker is a sound to praise, like a click from a clicker or the word good boy?? yeah that sounds like what im doing, ie i tell him he is a good boy and then release the treat is what i saying about showing the treat getting his attention starting the behaviour of walking, and removing the treat from site, is that an affective way?? he seems to loose interest once he cant see the treat or smell it and goes back to exploring.
  7. hmm dumb question here, what do you mean by marker?? this is what i do generally ... when he does what i want i give him praise and release the treat, i try to wait till the nipping stops but sometimes he doesnt stop and eventually gets the treat via slowlying nipping and licking until he has managed to release it himself so basically show him the treat, and get his attention, start the behaviour i want then put the treat away until he done the correct behaviour for a decent period of time??? am i getting this or just muddled it all up? its tuesday and im brain dead already thanks for you help :D
  8. Hi All My BC pup (6 months old) walks fine on lead ie doesnt pull etc, BUT during class they have to walk by your left side (which is fair enough he should be working not just wandering around like he does on walks), to do this they get us to hold there reward in our left hand so they see / smell it to keep them interested in walking next to you, this is also fine. Here is my question - my BC nips at my fingers or hand in effort to get the treat, if i have my hand higher he basically hops instead of walking since he is trying to get the treat. Anyone got any suggestions to stop this, only reason i ask is his little teeth are starting to hurt a little and i can only see this getting worse as he gets older. Same with when he tries to deflea my leg or arm it is cute and all but damn its starting to hurt LOL Cheers

    Outside Puppy

Given that SBT is not suitable Maybe some people could make a suggestion of breeds like/similar characteristics of the SBT that would be a good starting point for the OP? Just from personal experience i choose the breed i wanted, researched it and everything was fine and would be suitable for me and my wife. But if i came across bad news in my research, i personally dont know what other breed i would have choosen . Probably because i didnt have to, but if i did i think i would have been a little lost, disappointed and needed some pointers in the right direction on breeds that would have the characteristics that drew me to my first choice but where more suitable choice
  10. we had the same issue when we got our puppy (a 4 hour trip home), we stopped once and putting newspaper down at a truck stop (somewhere we thought other dogs would not have gone ordinarily), but he wouldnt go, he didnt go all the way home after getting back home he waited about 30minutes then finally went lol good luck with it and enjoy ur new puppy
  11. its your yard, and your dogs yard, approach the neighbours and get them to keep there cat on the property, try to discourage the cat from coming onto your property (apparently putting crushed egg shells in your garden bed is meant to deter them as its uncomfortable), if it continues approach the neighbours again and then go borrow a cat trap and take it to the pound (the owners will eventually learn - i know some people would not agree but its just my opinion)
  12. Hi Just got a question to see if anyone has any suggestions on how to correct my pups behaviour When we first got our BC (we got him at 8wks but is 5 months now) you could lay down near him and he wouldnt care and he would often just go to sleep, but about after 3 weeks or so he has taken laying down near him as a sign to play fight (i assume laying down to him is an act of be submissive??), he runs ups, pounces then starts biting hair and ears. He also does this (go the ears) if you try and hug him (doesnt always react this way tho). Also if he is lying down you can pat him on his head and face but if you touch his torso he mouths your hand and nips. Naturally there is an easy fix, dont lay down near him, dont hug him, and dont pat him on the torso. But if anyone has any suggestions i would be glad to hear them and give them a go Cheers

    Worming Puppy

not sure, i originally had the same question but the vet told us to give our pup dontal allwormer chewables every month at the moment so we just do that until they say to slow it down
  15. in regards to the carrot, is there a guide to how much or how many carrots a pup can have during the week? like angelsophie i had been giving them to my dog as a treat for while in the house at night as they kept in entertained and seemed to sooth his teething a little (wasnt so nipping after eating one) i have our bc half a carrot last night (put a little streak of peanut butter on it to get him interested) and he sat and ate the whole thing in about 30 minutes, alot faster than the denta bone but same end result sooo after my ramble back to my question, any ideas on how many in a week is safe/health? ie everything in moderation but whats a good guide?
  16. I brought the same thing but I read the package which had a very small fine print ( i thought it was irresponsible of them to put it that small as the packaging specifically states its for puppies ) that says not suitable for puppies less than 4 months old. I didnt end up giving it to him.... brought him a lamb neck bone instead and he loves it. Chews on it for an hour without getting tired... i had to grab it off him when he wasn't looking And yes i was thinking the same thing. Giving him something to chew is better than him chewing us! :) lol we got caught out with this as well, we held off giving them to him until he was 4 months, be loves them now tho, keeps him busy for quite some time - alot longer than a chicken neck does bit of deceptive marketing i think on Pal's behalf ie other company's state on the front of the packaging suitable for xx months.
  17. lol my pup is 20wks and teething like crazy, poor little fella the power cord thing is a concern, not sure what you can do about that tho if he is getting to that many power leads, i have heard people putting chilli sauce on things they dont want the puppy chewing on, hopefully someone has some other suggestions things like nylabones, ropes, tennis balls, basically something rubbery and chewy. I have seen they have puppy kongs but i never got one for ours. With the rope the people at petbarn suggested placing one of them in a bag of water let it absorb the water then freeze it, this seems to work great when our pups teeth are really sore. Also give them chicken necks that are either still frozen on only just a little bit defrosted. Takes them alot more chewing to break it down. In terms of the hole digging, generally bored or they are trying to find something they saw (moth, cricket etc). I was told a few things you can do, put a bit of pepper in the hole, put vinegar in the hole, put there poo in the holes and they wont dig anymore (or fill the hole back in and then put the poo on top) Good luck
  18. yeah thats what i was originally think and hence i thought was safe, good to know he can still have his treat every now and then
  19. ive seen heaps of products that say they are peanut butter flavoured and read that alot people feed there dogs it as a treat in kongs etc, but i have also read that nuts are toxic to dogs over time (apparently the toxins build up over time? i dont know how thats possible thats what it has said on a few sites)...... anyway, is peanut butter safe for dogs and puppies as a once in a while treat in there kong or alike? my BC goes crazy for it when he smells it, but i dont want to give it to him if its not good for him cheers
  20. im actually still awake in bed, the OH is asleep, and you can hear him running around the side of the house and then back to the backyard, i have peeked thru the blinds before to see what he was actually doing before going to settle him down and he is generally bashing up his teddy or running around the backyard with or without his teddy so as an overall suggestion, leave him to it and he will settle him self down?
  21. the breeder we got our pup from suggested putting fingers in the dogs mouth / taking food (chicken necks) away from them that way they get use to it and dont become over protective of there food or object to fingers in there mouth. We did this a little bit but found with the amount of things our pup was trying to eat that our fingers where in his mouth taking things back out anyway (he likes rocks for some strange reason - sad thing was i use to laugh at my brother since his staffy liked rocks, now my own bc has the same likes .... sigh) hehe all the best with the new pup
  22. Hi All This is more so a question from my OH, our BC occasionally (maybe once a week or once a fortnight) will have a hypo moment after he goes to bed, he basically gets up and runs around outside like a little spaz and eventually hits the back door which wakes us up. When i go outside he is okay just really hyped up and his heart is racing, i normally just get him to sit down and put my hand on his chest so i can feel his heart rate and when he is settled (heart rate back to normal) put him back to bed and he goes to sleep. The OH is worried he will learn that this behaviour and it might lead to him doing it for attention since i go outside and get him to calm down. I think he is he trying to burn off his last bit of engery since he has tried to sleep and cant? Anyone got any other thoughts on this? Cheers
  23. Hi All Our BC (17 weeks old) has a heap of toys which we swap around every day so he isnt playing with the same ones day after a day, but was wondering if there any toys which are more suited for indoor toys. Most of his toys (balls, ropes, teddy bears, and sqweekers) he is a complete spaz with - which is a good thing as he alot of fun, but when he is inside naturally i dont want him running at full pace through out the house (we have floor boards and he cannt break once he gets some speed up and just slides when wants to stop, bit worried he will eventually go a bit too fast and go thud into wall) so i didnt know if there where any more 'relaxing' toy ideas out there for him for when he is in the house? Cheers
  24. he is 16 weeks old this week for the ouch thing we where doing that and still do if he does bite as he use to bite when running around (especially hands for some reason), his biting has stopped while running around or playing (standing up or in any other seated position besides on his back lol) my current approach is tell him no and then ignore him, or if that doesnt work get him to sit up and get his mind on something else rather than mouthing and nipping while he rolls around his back so that would be the best approach for the time being?
  25. Hi All Just another question to see if anyone has any insights into why my puppy does this. When playing or being pat he will drop then roll on his back and then start to mouth on hands, arms or any body part that is close to him, i have assumed this is him trying to play fight, if we tell him no or uhuh or even just clap he sits back up and stops anyone got any ideas as to what this actually means for him? and if its something that will develop into a bad behaviour any suggestions on how to correct it? Cheers
