Vic's Breed Ban - 'good Dog, Bad Dog' - Article In Today&#
melzawelza replied to Alkhe's topic in In The News
Why do we assume these dogs are raised tough, hasn't anyone seen a crap dog before with reactive aggression for no good reason? You can buy a tough GSD with a predisposition for courage and aggression and can be trained to fight, but by default they don't randomly bite people unprovoked, neither will a well bred Rotty, dogs of balanced traits and stable temperament don't feature in unprovoked bite statistics, why do we need to protect crap dogs so they can be reproduced? ?? Well bred Pit Bulls don't bite people unprovoked. In fact they're one of the breeds least likely to do so due to being specifically selected against human aggression. I loathe to draw comparisons to other breeds but you statements that GSD and Rottweiler's do not feature in bite stats is completely incorrect. Both feature very highly. That's not to say they're bad dogs (I love both), but they are also a breed targeted by bad breeders and worse owners. -

Mumof4girls, the fact that you are open minded and said you are looking more into it puts you in a whole different category to previous posters in this thread. You don't deserve abuse for what you said, you deserve congratulations. It would be different if you were spouting absolutes as fact when they are incorrect, and supporting the eradication of an entire breed. The first time I met a pit bull I was nervous too. Intellectually I knew it was stupid (I was working as a dog trainer in kennels and was very well versed in dog body language, and training), but my heart rate still increased involuntarily. It's amazing what the media can do to create a base level fear just at the WORD. He was the sweetest, wriggliest man and I thoroughly enjoyed every second of training him. Now I'm a mad pit bull lady and I've got a (probable) one sleeping next to me right now. She is great with people, other dogs and my cats... and is a huge sook to boot. If you were closer I would happily have you meet her. Meeting them is a surefire way to change the way you feel... once you do you can't resist. -
Victory! Cumberland County Animal Control Backs Off Controversial
melzawelza replied to hastey's topic in In The News
Sandgrubber, it's because more breeds than the pit bull were targeted. Unfortunately people just don't have the same passionate response when it's only pit bulls targeted. It's a real shame, but it's still great to see such a reaction. -
One of my rescues was escaping out of an extremely secure yard... They bought a hidden fence and installed it / did the training and she so far has not escaped! http://www.hiddenfence.com.au/

It is that simple I would think? Rottweilers and GSD both have higher PSI bite strength than Pit Bulls, and any breed the same size or larger could do the same amount of damage. The comment singled out pit bulls as doing more damage than other breeds when they attack and therefore they should be eliminated. It is not a valid or truthful viewpoint. -
Yep, this is why so many of us have been trying to tell people that BSL is not a 'pit bull' issue. It can and WILL spread to other breeds. So sad

I didn't say she was brainless, I said that to support such a comment was brainless act. Reason being that all evidence, science and studies says otherwise. Supporting that comment is based on nothing but emotion and personal opinion, ignoring studies and evidence to the contrary. -

Mum to Emma, in that case I guess we need to get rid of every dog above knee height? Both German Shepherds and Rottweilers have higher PSI bite strength than Pit Bulls. Ban them too? The comment is brainless and so is your support of it. -
Hahahhaha I love her.

Oh god, that was like a horror story... And people wonder why the Staffy (Looked like Amstaff/Pits to me) gets such a bad rap

Communityk9 Letter Writing Campaign
melzawelza replied to melzawelza's topic in General Dog Discussion
Thanks guys! The more the merrier :D Good idea about the fed gov Snook, will speak to the other guys and see if we can get those details together too. -
Hi all, We at Communityk9 have launched a letter writing campaign for everyone Australia wide to participate in, in regards to Breed Specific Legislation. The aim is to have as many letters as possible going to our Premiers, Ministers and local MP's, to show them that Australians want PROVEN solutions to dog bites, not the current ineffective legislation which does nothing but make the general public feel like they are safer. We have provided a template letter for anyone who may have trouble or not have the time to write one themselves, and all the details of who to send it to on the page. We've made it as easy as possible and we'd really love if you could participate. From our webpage here. If you're on facebook, and would like to see regular updates and relevant articles, we'd love it if you could like our page here.

Go into the local council and speak with the Ranger, tell them what you have done and request that they co-operate with you, so that you and the dog can live peacefully with your neighbours and request that they issue a nuisance order. Most rangers are resonable people and will understand that you have gone to great lenghts to put a stop to the barking. Yep, best advice here. Just go and speak to the companion animal department. You need to be issued with a nuisance dog order and take a copy of both this and a stat dec to your vet.

Threatening Behaviour Outsise Dog Park
melzawelza replied to Double Lab Love's topic in General Dog Discussion
It's good that you have notified Council however baiting is not something that is covered by them, it is a police matter. It is really important that you notify the police as well. In fact, if you were only going to notify one the police is the more important of the two, they are the ones that investigate these issues, not council. -
How Can Anyone Think Its Right To Hit A Dog!
melzawelza replied to whitka's topic in General Dog Discussion
I have no issues with a little smack if it is timed right and appropriate for the dog. But it sounds like this was excessive and from the dogs reaction it didn't understand why it was smacked. -
Great to see some countries and states coming to their senses! All the while good old Victoria keeps their head in the sand. We'll be the laughing stock of the world soon.

Long Rant About A Scary Guy At An On Leash Oval
melzawelza replied to lovemesideways's topic in General Dog Discussion
Love me' sideways see my recent post. The companion animals act only states that a leash must be attachedto re dog and held by a person- no mention of length. I have never heard of an individual council adding a length... Sydney Councils are very different to other states and I have never heard of them adding provisions for their Council only- they just enforce the Companion Animals Act as it is. If he was on a long leash bs you were holding it you did nothing wrong. -
Long Rant About A Scary Guy At An On Leash Oval
melzawelza replied to lovemesideways's topic in General Dog Discussion
I have never heard of a Sydney Council putting a limit on the length of leash and the Companion Animals Act doesn't state a length. Unless your Council is the odd one out you haven't done anything wrong. Definitely report to both Council and police... Just so there's a record there. The Council could search the surrounding streets for a boxer called Bruiser - you never know they may find something. What a jerk! -
Question About Havanese And Coton De Tulear
melzawelza replied to kenneh's topic in General Dog Discussion
My Aunty was looking at Havanese, Maltese, bichon type dogs and a lowchen was suggested by Lowenhart.... Couldn't have been a better choice. She adores her dog and has been converted to the world of pedigree dogs! She can't believe how bombproof her temperament is! Worth considering if you have financial constraints... From memory the Havanese were about 2-3 thousand dollars. -
So nice to see dogs that aren't so overdone as the show dogs. They look like they could still function and excel at what they are supposed to do.

The stupid thing is, they say anything ending in 'oodle' is good.... so why not just go the common denominator and get a POODLE!!
