  1. Good luck. I've tried and can't. I feel so empty and hungry unless I eat some sort of animal flesh and I'm afraid subsitutes like tofu etc. just don't cut it. That just the eating habits you have slipped into. If you put as much effort into buying and preparing quality vegetables and other ingredients as you do meat, you would find them satisfying. Instead you eat a big lump of meat , and then garnish it with a small amount of boiled-up frozen veges. (that's what you describe here) If you ate a good vege dish, like a well-made vege lasagne, you wouldn't miss the meat as much. If you ate more vegetables and better vegetables, you would get used to that way of eating and wouldn't have to rely on meat so much. This. You can't eat the same when vegetarian and just take the meat out. I know a few people that would do that. Family eating meat burritos and they'd just have a burrito with salad and cheese. WTF. You do need to cook differently and you can't rely on the standard 'Meat and 3 veg'. You need to learn to hide veggies and tofu through things to bulk it out. Making a veggie chilli? Of course lots of beans but also grate a heap of carrots, capsicum, zucchini through. Add a tin of lentils on top of that. Then you start to really bulk out your food with nutrition and you will start to feel full.
  2. What's better, a brusque kennel owner who cares wonderfully for the dogs, or someone who blows smoke up your @rse to make you feel good about leaving them and gives the dogs minimal care and attention? Too true. There are PLENTY of these types of kennels around that are great at marketing and customer service and you would be sick at how the animals are treated. You mean the places where 'exercise' consists of being kicked out of their runs for 15 minutes while they hose down the kennel? The places that look like no dog ever dug a hole in their lawn . . . cause no dog was out long enough to? Yep. Or they just hose the shit out from under them while they're in there. I've seen tiny dogs drenched to the skin
  3. Another one is www.humanechoice.com (maybe .au as well?)
  4. Anne, I did the same after reading 'Eating Animals'. Didn't touch any meat for over a year. (did still eat seafood though). I now eat meat as long as its free range. I figured in the end I was making more of a difference by still keeping my money in the industry but funneling it towards what I want them to do, rather than remove it completely. That said, I only eat it maybe once or twice a week. Lots of veggie food. Don't let anyone make you feel bad about your choices. You do what is right for you.

  6. I didn't want to inspect the whole kennel, I just wanted to walk the dogs in, remove their harnesses and walk back out. He had to walk them in anyway, so I didn't see why I couldn't just follow him in. At the other kennel where they stayed that's what we did, and it only took the one person to walk the dogs in with us, reassure us that they would be fine, then walk back out. Most kennels you will find that their insurance doesn't cover you as a non staff member for going into the actual kenneling areas. So if a dog manages to bite you, you slip on the wet floors etc you would not be covered by their insurance. I think it's reasonable that you wouldn't be allowed into the actual kennels. However a tour of the facilities is not too much to ask and to view the kennels through windows at the outside of the block. There was no excuse for the man's rudeness though, he could have communicated this to you in a MUCH better way.
  7. I'd be calling the rangers first. They have some powers of entry. Rangers have no powers of entry or powers of anything when it comes to the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act in NSW. The only organisations that can enforce this act is the RSPCA, AWL and the NSW Police. I'm glad they're getting the poor kitties out.
  8. And it's surprising how intolerant some neighbours are. My neighbour had a screaming fit at me a few nights ago over my 5 month old pup letting out a dozen or so loud barks from INSIDE my house over a 5 minute period whilst I prepared her dinner. Apparently this is 'not acceptable and won't be tolerated'. Try explaining to this woman the reason why my pup is barking at this particular time and what I am doing to counter it and get lectured that I will 'need to do more'. Mind you we are talking about a working line Mal pup that is given a huge amount of exercise and training each day, never barks in her run, is kept inside at night (crated next to my bed) and only lets off an occasional 5 second yap throughout the day. I think we're doing pretty damn well thank you! Same neighbour also complained about my pup digging a hole in wait for it ...... MY backyard. Their reason? "She banged her bone against the fence and knocked all the tools off our shed wall" (They built their shed on the boundary line so on my side it's the fence..). But come one! Can't please some people... Nutcases!!
  9. That is simply horrifying. The poor girl and poor dogs. I wonder if her dogs survived??
  10. Hopefully we can get a good result! There's no guarantees and it could still end badly as I've explained to her but there's certainly hope!!
  11. Yes any breed assessor within the state and any temp tester that is approved can help them out. The owners of a dog who are subject to an NOI can choose any breed assessor or temp tester off the list , providing the owner will travel or the assessor agrees to do the same. The DLG will not give out the BA's and TT's if there has been no NOI issued, as the BA's and TT's are not considered valid. For a council officer, you really should have a better undersyanding of the act and the process Of course any assessor can help, my comment was based on an assumption that they do not have the time or means to travel to Sydney and back in the short time frame they have left. I have perfect understanding of the act thanks, it is you that has posted incorrect information in this thread. Seems you'd like to make this a pissing competition which is quite disappointing when we're both just trying to help these people. I've just been on the phone to them, the owners HAVE been issued with a NOI, although the whole thing is a bit of a mess. If you'd like to PM me Pavlova I'm happy to fill you in on what is going on, as I know you have a keen interest in these cases. I am not going to post it publicly of course.
  12. Voloclydes, I'm confused since your last post. What was the letter they received from the Council? What exactly does the title say? Is it a 'Notice of Intention to declare dog to be Restricted'? If so then they DO have a chance with this dog. I will PM you my phone number, please have your friends call me and I will assist them. I am a Council Officer and will be able to decipher what is going on and advise them. The council will not be able to give them a list of temp assessors as they do not have the list. The department of local government does and the phone number should be on the paperwork sent to them. I can give them the names and numbers of two Sydney temp Assessors that are very thorough and fair. Please have them call me ASAP. ETA: Just saw you're in Jindabyne so the Sydney assessors won't be of help.
  13. That section is stating that it doesn't apply if the dog is registered as 'otherwise than a breed or kind of dog referred to in section 55' (i.e as a non restricted breed) or as a cross breed of a restricted breed. It is saying that it only applies to dogs chipped as pure. Pit crosses are not restricted unless they've failed a temp test. Seems that the dog as chipped pure anyway so it doesn't matter anyway Which Council? (PM me if need be). If the ranger has that attitude then unfortunately they're up shit creek without a paddle. The dog is chipped as pure and is automatically a restricted dog. They either have to comply with the restrictions (cage, muzzle, collar, dangerous dog sign) or euthanase the dog. Very sad
  14. You cannot access a "breed assessor" or the " temp testers" without the notice of intent. BA and TT will not be considered valid unless an NOI has been issued and the BA and TT have been performed within the 28 days ( unless extra time has been approved by council ) You can approach an independent dog trainer or behaviour specialist, who could write a report about the dog but council and the court do not have to accept this, to let the dog off the hook. Yep all correct EXCEPT the dog is only automatically restricted if it's chipped as a pure pit bull. If it's chipped as a pit bull cross it is NOT automatically restricted and Council must issue an NOI so the dog can be breed/temperament assessed. Sounds like from what is being described that the dog is chipped as pure. If it is chipped as pure and isn't, the Council CAN request a breed change from the DLG but you need the Council on your side supporting you. Read here page 63: http://www.dlg.nsw.gov.au/dlg/dlghome/documents/Forms/Guideline%20on%20the%20Exercise%20of%20Functions%20under%20the%20CAA%20-%20Dec%202011.pdf So if the ranger is nice please alert them to this - a lot are not aware they have this option. If they aren't they've reached the end of the line unfortunately and will have to comply with the restrictions or give up the dog. Very sad
  15. Well, for one they're illegal to use in NSW (Which drives me insane but that's the way it is). K9Pro sells bark collars. K9Pro is in NSW. There maybe restrictions on its use in NSW but I think those restrictions can be got around. If you need one I would ask K9Pro, you can find him here: http://www.k9pro.com.au/ They're not illegal to sell, they're illegal to use. And you will see that K9pro state all through the website that people must check the restrictions in their own state. They are illegal to use in NSW full stop. There is no getting around it (except to just use them anyway, it's unlikely you'd be caught). But it means dog trainers, Council officers etc cannot recommend them to people with barking dogs and as such a lot of those dogs may end up debarked or dead instead. Madness. If you don't believe me just read the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
  16. Such a sad story BSL hurts more than just the dogs.
  17. Well, for one they're illegal to use in NSW (Which drives me insane but that's the way it is).
  18. My ex boyfriend had been told as a child that his dog had gone to live on the farm. Cynical bugger that he was, he assumed they had put the dog to sleep and just told him the age old story. Fast forward to only a year ago at 23 years old it was brought up at dinner, with him saying 'I can't believe you used such a cliche to lie about putting the dog down!'. The parents were shocked and said no, the dog DID actually go and live on a farm!! So all these years he'd assumed they'd killed the dog when they were telling the truth!! LOL. He was very happy.
  19. Yep, let's just find every *alleged* pit bull attack and put them in one place, but ignore all the attacks from other breeds that have happened in the same time period so it looks like the only dogs that are attacking children are pit bulls. Disgusting.
  20. Watch out sighthound owners, it looks like the focus is expanding
  21. Also - Puppy Love Rescue on the Central Coast now have a 16 (d) as well, but they tend to go for the bully breeds.
  22. Darren at Fetching Dogs Rescue(Plan B on here) is a little obsessed with Pugs! Although he's based in Sydney so the distance may not be great.
  23. Aggressive or yappy breeds? I think you might mean individual dogs, as no breed are all aggressive or yappy.
