Oops, thought you were a girl!

No problems, I know it can be very confusing!! Basically the thing to remember in NSW is that NO dog is restricted unless it's either microchipped as a purebred pit bull or it has been through the breed assessment/temp test process and failed. Breed assessors and temp testers are not Council employees and in fact Council officers do not know the identity of who has assessed the dog, they only receive a number. By breed assessing a 'suspicious' dog before release, the Council has upheld their obligation as far as restricted breed legislation and given the dog a chance of being rehomed. Breed/temp assessor decisions are final and cannot be challenged, and the assessors cannot be held liable for anything. I don't know why they have listed this girl as a pit bull and not a cross or an Amstaff. It could be that the impounding Council has written Pit Bull on the impounding form whereas other Councils brought in the other dogs and have writen Amstaff. That would be my bet. Either way, she'll be breed assessed before rehoming and I would think she will be fine. :)

No mention of registered breeders at all the whole night Sheridan but I think it was clear what they were talking about when they discussed puppy farmers. They had the guy from Banksia Park/ACA Breeders proudly stating he has 300-400 breeding dogs on his property. I couldn't help but pipe up at that. -
If she passes her breed assessment/temp assessment she is not a restricted breed. Therefore she lives her life as any other dog and the pound is able to rehome her because she isn't a restricted breed. They aren't exempt from BSL - they just wouldn't be rehoming a restricted breed dog and therefore not breaking the law. She will most likely come back as an Amstaff X something or if she does come back as a Pit X if she passes a temp test she is not restricted.

I was at the filming of it last night (and got to have a dig at a puppy farmer which was satisfying). It will be interesting to see how it comes across after edit. Well worth watching. Nina you were mentioned and praised strongly by Tabby -
Interesting, usually they list them as Pit X or Amstaff X until they're assessed. Either way, if she's listed as for sale by EOI she'll be breed assessed and temp tested if needed and be rehomed (as long as she's a nice dog, of course!) :)

Natural Rearing Border Collie Breeder?

 -
They'll issue a notice of intent to declare a restricted breed, then a breed assessor will come to the pound and assess the dog. I've never seen a dog come back as a pure bred pit bull (and I've seen many, many many dogs go through the process). A few come back as Pit X and go on to be temperament tested. Most come back as cross breeds. ETA: Your link doesn't work for me. What do they have the dog classified as on the website?

Blacktown (and most major pounds in NSW) issue a notice of intent on dogs that look like this and they are breed assessed (and temperament tested if needed) before rehoming. Very very few dogs come back as restricted. This is all 100% legal.

Gorgeous dog! -
Why, because they don't say what you want them to say? This is a scientific study. There are no 'so called' findings. They are actual findings. The study does not say that it the kid has animals they won't be allergic, simply that it is less likely. Which is true. Because science (the study) backs it up.

He isn't the first one to do so: http://www.globalanimal.org/2012/05/10/brave-pit-bull-saves-woman-from-train-video/73865/ Lilly was much luckier though RIP to this brave pup.

^^ why doesn't the RSPCA take dogs like this? It's just as bad as starving them!
-
That is just horrendous :mad

One of the instructors at my obedience club has one - she imported him from the US and from all accounts her breeder seemed quite legit - sending through papers (I'm assuming not AKC but taking the time to do them nonetheless) and being very proactive/interested in bloodlines/homes. I have to say though that while the dog had a lovely temperament it didn't look well put together at all. ETA: No wait, I lie! The breeder was actually in AUS and the dog was bred in this country - but she had imported the parents.

How horriffic! Poor, poor lady :mad At least the new owners will know that the pups have come from an incredibly healthy and robust mum! -
^^ what about rescues?

Hearsay. Can't be acted on.

I'm the opposite. When I was earning well but only paying rent and had heaps of spare cash I didn't have any pet insurance as I knew if something cropped up I'd be able to afford it. Now I'm earning the same money but paying a big mortgage and I know that if one of my pets needed thousands of dollars worth of treatment it would be nigh on impossible for me to pull the money together. I don't ever, ever want to have to be in that position, so now they have insurance.

He looks like a lovely fellow, very soft sweet face! But I agree that he is very overweight. Not an insult, but it needs to be said as you do need to slim him down a lot for his health and his joints. He will be a happier fellow after that :)

Vic Govt Funding
melzawelza replied to Sue & Waldo's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
*unless they look like they might be Pit Bulls. In all seriousness though, it's nice to see VIC government doing something positive when it comes to dogs. I hope some great rescue groups will benefit from this. -
I find it odd that you've assumed I was condemning you with my 'second hand information' comment. I actually wasn't aiming it towards you at all, because you were going by what your own behaviourist had said, and you weren't condemning other rescues for attempting to help, simply stating that you yourself would not take him on (nothing wrong with that). But the fact that you seem to be quite defensive about it now makes me wonder if you are regretting some of your comments in this thread. My comment was aimed purely at the people in this thread who had nothing to do with Horse who were suggesting that the dog should not be given a further chance. People who were making assumptions on the dog because they once knew a dog that looked like him that attacked another dog. People who have said they 'can't be positive' about the dog or a rescue taking him on. It's one thing to say that you don't have the resources to take the dog on (and a commendable thing!) but it's something else altogether to judge or argue against rescues who are seeking the resources to assess the dog further and allow him the chance to shine. If you had recieved the amount of PM's and e-mails I got about this dog harrassing us about not taking it then you'd feel a bit pissy too. I did take offense at your '2nd hand information' commention because it was not factual. I don't regret it at all, I absolutely would not take a dog into general population foster care with the dogs history, I would however send it to our boot camp - where we send all our behavioural cases if space permits - space did not permit in this dogs case, I did at no time judge any other rescue for trying to help the dog. I stated what is very logical and not emotional that given the dogs history it wouldn't be responsible to put it into general foster care which I stand by. You can get as argumentative as you want but I run an ethical, accountable and repsonsible rescue service. I have learned my lesson not to post about logical things in these threads - thank you for reminding me. I have just clarified that I was not in any way aiming my post at you. Why are you still defending your actions? You have nothing to defend! Unless you think you do?

Just saw this update from AWL on facebook about Horse and thought I'd update those following this thread: Facebook link Blurb: I'm so glad he was given the chance he deserved, and I think his story shows it is important to find out first hand about a dog rather than condemn a dog solely on second hand information.
