You missed the worst part of that story. They took the dog to their vet hospital, put it under a general anaesthetic and x-rayed it all without the owner's permission or knowledge to ascertain whether the dog was a natural bob or had been docked. I was so horrified. The owner had no idea their dog had been taken and it was a brachy breed to top it off. Unnecessary GA and the dog could have died while under and who would be responsible?! Not the RSPCA!!

No one told you you should have bought here. I certainly didn't. I simply highlighted that your 'overpriced' statement was unfair. We're not talking about surf shirts, kids clothes, shoes and homewares that are mass produced by a machine here. We're talking about handmade leather collars that are made by someone sitting down and working hard on each individual collar for a good length of time. There is absolutely a valid reason why people selling such items in Australia may be charging more than Karma collars, and I already told you what it was. The person making Karma collars would be making about $10 an hour for the work that goes in to them. If she is happy with earning that then good luck to her, she makes lovely collars. But to state that similar items here in Aus are overpriced is completely unfair. Should everyone be expected to make $10 an hour for handcrafted bespoke items? If a person chooses to do so then that is absolutely their right. But there is absolutely nothing wrong with charging what your skills and time is actually worth (and Karma collars would absolutely be worth more than that as well).
-
Is it that this country over charges or Karma are undercharging? They would be making absolutely next to no money on those collars, with the amount of time and effort that goes into something like that... I would guess something like $10 an hour. They're lovely collars no doubt and if they are happy to make very little money for their time then that is their choice, but to imply that others here in Australia who charge a higher amount are overcharging isn't fair.

Looks like a lot of the Beagle X Pug's I've met.

I think the difference that no one has really touched on, is that when the puppy farmed dog is sold in a petshop, money goes into the puppy farmer's pocket, thus directly enabling them to continue breeding. Shelter dogs being sold in pet shops is not going to line puppy farmer or backyard breeder pockets - even if they may have come from there in the first place. In fact if it's done on a large scale it will do the opposite as the BYB/Puppy farmers will not be able to send their pups to the pet shop because all the pups and kittens are shelter pets. I reacted negatively when I first heard about this a year or so ago but after thinking it through I feel that it's appropriate as long as the pups aren't in glass boxes and have room to move, they don't 'live' there all day and night, and the homes are screened appropriately.

When They Love You So Much It Hurts....
melzawelza replied to MadWoofter's topic in General Dog Discussion
The other funny thing about my bitey face girl Aussie 3 is that she is an overshot girl, so it's like being kissed with someone with buck teeth, all you feel are these little front top teeth as they stick out further than the rest lol. It was our saver when she was little, before she learn't some manners & used to launch herself at your face with excitment :) Lili used to run from wherever she was and launch at our faces too when she was little Same Aussie3, When Stella was younger she could be up the yard somewhere & I could be putting shoes on at the back door & she'd run flat out & launch herself at your face with her mouth open I've found the nipping at the face to be a real border thing! Met many that do it! I thought the smashing your nose was just an Amstaff/Pit/Staffy thing but obviously not!! When I was working as a trainer a stunning big Amstaff boy almost broke my nose. Same scenario as others - gave him the 'down' hand signal and leant down. He went OOOH HELLO and just jumped up and smashed me with his block head. Never felt such pain!!! My current girl has the most horrendously whippy tail... and when she's particularly happy to see you she circles going WHACK WHACK WHACK all around your legs. I've had bruises! She also likes to sometimes paw me in the face and it always hurts! -

Coroner Calls For Laws On Breeding Restricted Breeds
melzawelza replied to Alyosha's topic in In The News
Yes cos that's totally doable and enforceable. If the resources aren't there to stop just the APBT being bred how are they supposed to police ALL cross breeds?! And exactly what do you do with the cross breeds that are inevitably born? Kill them? Seize them? Then we won't have to worry about playing spot the Pitbull, you'll either own an ANKC recognised breed or FCI breed or not have a dog at all. That argument is as silly as BSL itself. All well and good in principle but completely impossible in the real world. -

Thanks! This thread is giving me lots of ideas - some couldn't be done simply because of legislation but lots are good. And it's nice seeing some of my own initiatives in here as ideals for people - I've just ordered 30kg worth of dog treats to give out to dog owners that I see walking their dogs on the leash/picking up their poo/clearly in control at the dog park etc
-
Just going door to door in any shire in any street would pay someone's wages and vehicle costs every day. They would either pick up fines or rego fees and at what cost is BSL and the life of a child or someone's pet due to owners who dont keep their dog's in secure yards ? The fees for life time registration in NSW goes to councils to enforce the laws - I pay money for all of my dogs to give them money to ensure other people do the same - it was the platform they used to bring it in and rather than driving around shopping centre car parks and fining people who over stay their spot for five minutes theycould take some of that and do what they promised to do. They have to attend anyway for barking dogs etc and they have to pick the dogs up and take em to the pound what's the differeence in infrastructure and admin to take it home and counsel the owner the first offence? Its the same person, the same vehicle, the same administration. Surely allocating council land which is used only for a handful of people who want to run their dog's off leash , supplying poo bags because people dont want to have to carry them , ensuring everyone plays by the rules and fining those who dont requires more than simply ensuring they are more proactive and everyone is safe to walk their kids and their dogs around the steets? A lot of councils DO take dogs home first go without impounding. I certainly do, and If I can't find the owners I drop them at the local vets where they can stay for up to three days before they have to go to the pound. Most go home before that point. I know my Council is not the only one to do that. But yes; there are still plenty (especially rural) tHat don't. But when you take them home do you work with the owner to see why it happened and how to prevent it happening again? Yep - check out the fenceline, discuss exercise/training. If they don't know how he's getting out I suggest they stand out the front and call him to see if he 'shows' them by escaping to get to them. Majority of the time it's a one-off accident of a child or tradie leaving the gate open though, as opposed to an escape artist dog.

Rescue Dogs With Medical Problems
melzawelza replied to Every Greyhound's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Not a rescue but I have a friend with an old cattle dog that has just spent thousands and thousands bringing her back from the brink and the bills are not over yet (shes still in care at thw bet hospital). She has been diagnosed with cushings as part of the problem in the last week. She is a student and has financially destroyed herself giving her dog the medical treatment she needs to keep her alive but she feels it's totally worth it as she's almost out the other end now. She's been posting lots of sweet photos of the old girl as she's been visiting her at the vet every day. It's been so nice to see someone care and do so much for her old friend. Not a rescue, I know, but thought I'd mention it just in case as she has fallen on very hard times financially from these (and now ongoing) vet bills. -
Coroner Calls For Laws On Breeding Restricted Breeds
melzawelza replied to Alyosha's topic in In The News
My thoughts exactly. I had so, so much hope for this coroners report and I've been so upset about the outcome. According to a friend who attended it was assumed from day 1 that the reason for the attack was the dog's breed, and the entire investigation was based on finding out how the dog had not been picked up and wasn't complying with legislation. Nothing about the reasons why, or focusing on the incident itself. It was stated by the family during the investigation that immediately preceding the dog grabbing the child, a table had been broken over its head. ETA: I just read that link... THANK YOU. I hadn't read it before and I feel better after reading it. Was pretty despondent after the coroner's findings. -

He had worked there from 2003-2005 as their behaviourist. But his experience has left him decrying the RSPCA and their actions. He had a LOT more to say on the night. -

No mention of registered breeders at all the whole night Sheridan but I think it was clear what they were talking about when they discussed puppy farmers. They had the guy from Banksia Park/ACA Breeders proudly stating he has 300-400 breeding dogs on his property. I couldn't help but pipe up at that. Ooh are you the woman wiht long blondeish hair? Who talked about him not giving his breeding dogs the opportunity to live in the circumstances he was breeding puppies for? That is my friend, also a Mel, who got her point across beautifully. I was the second one that came in with the left hook discussing the socialisation of the puppies themselves :) -

And thus we see why they kill 51% of unclaimed animals in their care I should point out too that the editing made Steve Coleman look a lot better than he did on the night. Jenny had to really pressure him hard to get hard answers regarding what is contained in their temp test as he just kept starting with the corp-speak and spin. She had to interrupt him about four times saying 'PRACTICAL examples' before she actually got what was aired (which was still vague!). The PIAA guy threatened the girl from Animal Lib too - said that if she said some of the things on the show that she's said in the past she'll open herself up to libel in a very threatening manner. It irritated me that both of these things were not included in the final cut as both very clearly put a much clearer perspective on both men. -

Thank you :) I was the second who questioned him re: socialisation of puppies and my friend was the first who mentioned the keeping of the breeding bitches. I had a lot more I wanted to say that night but unfortunately I was supposed to be there in an 'observational' capacity only. Couldn't keep my mouth shut at the puppy farming b##stard though. -

Really !! I hope they edit that bit out then, lol. Nice of him but really dont want my name mentioned on tv and I havent done anything different to any of the pounds I deal with........ If it's any consolation he only said your first name! But he mentioned you probably three times and was basically saying it's because of you that their kill rates are now so low and you do a wonderful job
