  1. "the only one who suffers is the dogs?" Maybe because it was the pony that suffered. There are loads of other animals that also deserve and are entitled to be safe. And you dont think those 2 dogs will be back to that field again? Of course they will. The owners is an idiot, the dogs had fun, and the owner of the pony will never be able to leave her stock out and unguarded until the dogs are gone, whether PTS or sent to the city.
  2. Not from me, I would help you. Its common sense to me, if these dogs are PTS then the other animals in the area are safe, a fair trade off.
  3. Our pointer pup has eaten 4 dog beds, but we finally beat him with Puppi Trainer Bitter Bite, it cost about $10 for the bottle, you spray it on the bedding and it tastes horrible. After 3 weeks we have a tiny hole about 10c size, and he hasn't looked at it since. As his just 12 months, I really think the spray worked and it wasn't just a fluke. You could try leaving some socks laying about that have been well sprayed, after he gets a few month fulls of something not pleasant, he may change his mind about how much he loves socks.
  4. I think a few years ago I met the BIGGEST IDIOT ever!!! My GSDX has issues.. We have all the Dangerous Dog Warning signs on our gate/fences (because of the restrcition laws) and our yard is secure. A few years ago my GSDX was going beserk and looking out the window I notice 3 young boys (7yo-9yo) IN my front yard, kicking my fence and going "pssssss, pssssss" to a staffy pup, which is also going beserk at the fence. I yelled out and told them to get out of my yard. Next thing I know my dog is at the driveway going beserk. (I live on a corner so the kids just walked around the house and up my driveway and were kicking my gate) I yelled out again and they took off. This began happening almost everyday, with the kids running down the hill giggling each time I yelled. One Sunday I was outside and heard the usual noise so I walked round the house and called out to the kids. They came over and I asked about their dog. They said her name was Zoey and about 4 months old. I asked if they loved Zoey and they said Yes. I said "well if you keep teasing that dog and it gets out, it will kill Zoey." One kid sticks his chest out and replies "I'll kick it in the head" I said "It will bite you too, it hates kids" The next day they returned as usual!!!!!!! When I went out they stood on the path and yelled out to me ""Our dad says if your dog gets out and attacks us,,,he will have it shot and we will sue you and get heaps of money"" YEAH!!!! That's a quick way to get a few dollars...Let your kids provoke a large dog, get attacked and sue the owners!!!!! BARGAIN!!!! I had to phone the Rangers who came and took a statement then went to visit the parents of the children. The Rangers told them IF the kids were continually teasing and provoking my dog and something DID happen, they would have NO right to sue and in fact I could actually have them charged and sue them. At which point the father says ""The kids don't mean to go in the yard, the pup drags them in there" The Ranger then told them if the children could NOT keep control of the dog, then the children (by law) were NOT allowed to walk the dog, without supervision. The father said he and mother didn't have time to walk the dog and as they had no yard it needed to be walked each day. Ranger told them to either make time, move and get a yard, or get rid of the dog, but under NO circumstances could they allow the children to walk the dog anymore. Soon after the father (with kids in tow) began walking past my house throwing rocks over the fence at my dog, yelling out abuses and telling me next time he'd throw a bait over the fence, not a rock. I put up with it for 3 days and called the police. Haven't seen the father, kids or dog since. How can a parent allow thier children to be in danger and only think of the $$$$ they may get in a law suit??? And this is what is wrong with some australian's, this attitude that I can do what I want and how dare you interfere with what I want to do, because I'm so special I get treated differently. Why can't we have a licence for parents so unfit adults can't breed more of the same
  5. If they charge the same fee to register for a litter as the cost of getting a dog sterilized, then some people who say they can't afford to pay for sterilization may be more willing to find the money and pay. I'm sure lots of us have heard that excuse.
  6. can I just ask about the chicken wings, do you mean whole chicken wings with the 3 joints? Are the bones any problems with large dogs? Also, I'm in Perth, so if anyone knows where to get some cheap meat for dogs would you mind passing on the information.
  7. If there living with their grandmother they may not have had time to build a fence, lets admit it with the funneral I'm sure they were thinking of other things.
  8. my previous GSD used to get really excited everytime she saw any GSD, no matter what the colour, she definitely recognized the shape. My current dog doesn't care about other GSD, but she doesn't like golden retrievers (but loves labs), I dont know why as she never had a problem with one.
  9. GSDowner I agree with the others as to this attack, its probably a variety of reasons, but some dogs can attack their owner if they are 'surprised' or 'stressed'. I read a very interesting book a couple of years ago, the author investigated a variety of international studies on dog behavioural problems. One conclusion is some dog breeds which are bred to react quickly to stimulae (such as guard dogs) which are bred to such a fine point that it may backfire and they can actually attack the owner. In one case a man was attacked when he stepped over his sleeping pitbull. Something trigged this dog and he attacked. It becomes a breeding problem and probably these lines should not be bred from, but with a demand for 'tough' dogs and BYB I can't see it happening.
  10. I also did not crate train, I took a week off from work and the rule was very simple For the first 3 days, the pup was taken out every hour on the dot, and after eating and waking up. The following 3 days, the pup was taken out every 2 hours plus after eating and waking up The following 3 days, the pup was taken out every 3 hours plus after eating and waking up. Our door is left open during the day so the pup could go outside himself, it only took 4 days and no more accidents. At night we put her in a box high enough so she could not jump out (yes a crate), but this is for safety due to electrical cords. She woke me up at approx 1 to 2am, it took about 10 minutes to do a potty break, then straight back to bed and straight to sleep, except one night, when she needed to go outside again for a poop. They cry when they wake up as they don't want to make a mess in their bed, its quick and easy. The benefit is that they learn to be potty trained quick as they rarely make a mess. The funny thing is I asked the puppy pre school how long it would take for her to sleep through the night (it had been a while since having a puppy), and the silly cow said "What, you get up during the night, stick it in the laundry and it will just make a mess if it needs too". LOL The current dog took a few months to sleep through, the previous one took a little longer. Our current pup slept through at 13 weeks.
  11. The fish/potato is quite cheap to do, I did it years ago with my god, you can purchase a kibble, but I found tins of fish and boiling my own potatoes fairly reasonable. Watch out for tuna/sardine tines on sale and stock up. I also used the Malaseb, weekly when needed, remember to leave it on for 10 minutes whenever washing. If found it really helped her itchiness. Dog diets are for a minimum of 6 weeks, even though you could expect some results to show before that. I just copied the below to another topic, so I'll copy it here as well, this is the list we used to work our way through our last dogs problems, it starts from the cheapest/easiest to diagnose and works it way to the hardest. It may give you a few ideas that your vet may not have mentioned. There are 2 common reasons for dogs to be itchy- mite infestation & allergic reactions. Mites are diagnosed by skin scrapings & you need to see your vet. Signs of allergies include chewing at skin, licking, rubbing up, scooting(rubbing bottom along the ground), chewing/licking at feet, chronic ear irritation, chronic watery eyes & sneezing. We can divide skin allergies into 5 general areas: 1) Flea Allergies- usually chewing/scratching around tail base or around neck, but can be itchy anywhere. It takes only 1 flea to cause an allergy, which is why some dogs that have very few fleas can be itchier than a dog with many fleas that isn't allergic. Often seasonal (Spring/Summer), but can be all year round. 2) Food Allergies- often will be itchy around the face, ears and feet, although can be itchy all over. Most common allergens include wheat products (found in most canned and dry foods), beef, and to a lesser degree chicken. Allergies will occur all year round. 3) Contact Allergies- are quite uncommon, and usually affect areas with no or little fur cover eg. abdomen and feet. Allergens include grasses, plants, clothing/carpet fibres and many others. Often seasonal, but can be all year. 4) Inhaled Allergies- are quite common, and affect all areas ie. skin, feet, ears, face, eye, nose etc.. Most common are grass pollens, plant pollens, dust mites, and moulds (found normally in most environments). Often seasonal, but can be all year. 5)Allergies to the normal bacteria found on the skin- called Staph. These often show slightly different signs to other allergies- need a vet to confirm. Often all year round. All allergies can cause itchiness anywhere, so it is impossible to tell just on appearances which allergen is causing the problem. Many dogs are allergic to several. TREATMENT There are 2 main options when trying to deal with allergies:-. 1 Discovering the Cause- 2 allergies can be eliminated easily are flea & food. * a) If fleas are present, it is worthwhile trying to eliminate them first. * b) If food allergy is suspected, trial dog on low allergy food diet, must be done for 8 weeks, The diet consists of:- Meat that the dog hasn't had before eg. fish, kangaroo, rabbit and one other product, consider rice/potato/carrot but most not be part of their original diet. After 8 weeks there should be improvement, if not an allergy test is next. This is a test for inhaled allergens, and tests plants, grasses, trees, dust mites and moulds. Done by blood samples. - if all of the above has been performed to no avail, then a contact allergy, or inhaled allergen not included in the allergy test is most likely. try change of bedding and all detergents including washing products and shampoo, you can also send your dog to a relative's place for 3-4 weeks. 2 Other medications - * (a) Antihistamines-. these work better with evening primrose oil (1-4 capsules in food) antihistamines to try include:- Phenergan, Periactin, Polaramine, Teldane Contact your vet for dosage, determined by weight. * (b) Anti-allergy shampoos and conditioners- There are many that help, eg. tea tree preparations, eucalyptus rinses, Quit Itch Lotion & Malaseb
  12. I did the food allergy diet with my dog as well. Just remember that loads of dogs are allergic to beef and chicken, and most dog kibble is made from this. So to do a food trial you have to choose a food they normally do not eat or are part of kibble they eat. I also used the apple cidar vinegar to help wither her ear infections (ongoing problem) and I think it did help, we just put it in her drink water. The 2 easiest are fish/potato or Kangaroo/rice. I tried both of them, just in case she was allergic to one of them. It means no treats or anything other food. In the end we found our dog had inhaled Allergies and the food diet did not work. But, it's one of the easiest things to test for, as your dog has to eat anyway and its not expensive to do. I am copying the below for you to read as it goes through the steps from easiest/cheapest to test to the most expensive, I got this from elsewhere and savd it at the time, hope it helps. 13. Its important to spread the word about what they are like, many people only see "care for animals", they don't really understand what PETA is about, its important to never donate money to any organization that promotes violance and anti social behaviour. Since they also want to stop all animal ownership they will never get my vote.
  14. I had a german shepherd who had a lot of ear problems and hayfever allergies, but luckily had no problems with her fur. I did a lot of research at the time and read a lot of good things about apple cider vinegar. You put it on their food every day and it helps with ear infections, it also has a lot of vitamins in it. Of course you would still want to see a vet, but alternative medicine may help. Just thought I might mention it.
  15. I read an american website that did a study of people that had gotten rid of their dogs and then acquired another dog. Amazingly (by memory) 85% of them were happy and kept the second dog. I searched but could not find it again, but it said the reason they got rid of the original dog was they did not research the breed and its requirements, no thought to what will be needed over the next few years. Second time around they must have been more experienced and put more thought in. Still doesn't help the original dog though, does it?
  16. well said Ravyk, I've heard so many weird things about these people that I am very negative about them arriving in australia. Hopefully they won't get funding/assistance and leave quickly.
  17. City of Canning has 2 dog rule for most of its areas
  18. I would also mention this to other dog walkers so if they see her they can change directions, nothing happened this time (other than a nasty scare), but it may be worse another time. Also, some one else may also have had a run in or know where she lives.
  19. by GSD likes staffys best, we have a lot of them around here and most of them play really happily together. The pointer will play with anything that moves, or sometimes even an interestingly shapped rock or log. The most fun I have seen him have though is with a whippet, they had a wonderful play
  20. Hi NCarter I'm also in Perth and there is a white labradodle that steals balls at our local dog park, is yours also a white labradoodle? The owners also yell at this dog.
  21. We live near a fantastic off leash area, its a 1km long so most people keep walking, and most of the dogs are good, but there is one dog that I can not understand why they bring him there. He is a very large bull terrier and dog vicious, they never let him off the leash but he is so bad they walk with an axe handle, in case. As you get younger dogs at parks that are being taught recall and are not 100% dependable, how these people can walk this dog in an off-leash area I really can not understand. The other day I saw them coming so sped up to stay in front, but the older dog did a poop, so I had to call the younger dog, put it on the leash, put the older dog into sit position and try to pickup the poop So I decided to walk in the other direction, they walked about 7 metres passed me and turned around to come back, so I had to do it all again while they passed me the other way. I don't take my dogs to the park for socialization in particular, but the GSD loves balls and the pointer is full of energy and they need the exercise which is hard to do on leash.
  22. our GSD did it for a couple of weeks, but a bit earlier in the evening and eventually we discovered there were rats. We got rid of the rats and it took almost a month before she stopped doing it.
  23. What wonderful news, so exciting for the white shepherd community. Hope the winning streak continues
  24. Our last GSD had polarimine tablets, she was approx 38kg and started at one tablet twice a day, that didn't work so the vet increased it to 2 tablets twice a day, which did work. Dogs can handle a lot more polarimine and it doesn't make them tired. I have a saved information sheet on dog itchiness, which I have copied below for you. Our previous GSD had allergies, and I used this to help identify her problem, hope it helps you. There are 2 common reasons for dogs to be itchy- mite infestation & allergic reactions. Mites are diagnosed by skin scrapings & you need to see your vet and its best to get this cleared before starting to look at allergies. Rice- boiled -. 50% of meal. Vegetables -. 20% of meal. After 8 weeks there should be improvement, if not an allergy test is next. 25. We had a dog that had allergies, we did a food allergy elimination diet first, but it ended up being grass. always try the diet elimination first as it is the cheapest and easiest to do, and many dogs are allergic to poultry and beef, and whats in most dog food? If you haven't done it before, you have to choose 2 food types that your dog has never had before, kangaroo is good, perhaps with one vegie or rice, but not wheat/oats which tend to be in dog food. They need to be on this diet for 8 weeks with absolutely not other food allowed. Get kangaroo fillet and cut it into stips and bake it, this is a good treat. If that doesn't work, try another 2 food types, fish and potato is good. After 2 different diets have shown no improvement, then you can pay for the allergy testing.
