There is a risk that pups that are exposed to it that are vaccinated may contract the virus, it depends on how old the pup is and if the mothers immunity in the pup fought off the vaccination. There have been cases of this mentioned. You hear of adult dogs catching it, and dogs with a very low immune system due to contracting something like mange. A Titre (spelling) test can be done at your vet to ensure your pup has the right amount of immunity to cover it for the virus, remember that a live vac will lower the pups immune system that is why the vet will tell you that you shouldn't take your pup out into the public until 10 days after the second vaccination. As the weather is getting colder in Sydney and Melbourne, there should be less outbreaks and the virus thrives in the heat and usually lays dormant in the colder weather.

Also watched it, but it was reported as a Mastiff not a Pit Bull. Just wondering where the parents where when the interview was taking place? All the kids were on the TV but no adults? Why did the incident have to occur before they got the fence fixed?

Grooming A Stafforshire Bull Terrier For Showing
nickojoy replied to Loves Dogs's topic in General Dog Discussion
They were rare some years back, and the price hasn't dropped as people are still paying the price. A breeder that I built a web site for, has a 12 week blue boy for sale for $900 and can't find a home for him, people must think there is something wrong with him because he is so cheap. -
Grooming A Stafforshire Bull Terrier For Showing

Don't underestimate the blues, as mentioned plenty of times of this forum there is a stunning blue bitch in Melbourne. Someone else will be able to say her name because I can't think of it right now. -
And for the record, not all dogs in rescue are required under their clauses to be life time registered. When the rescue group collects a dog from the pound, they just ensure that the dog is transferred into the rescue groups name with the carers details on there and pay for the chipping. It was always up to the new owner once re-homed to register that dog, not the rescue group.

Update - Letter sent today to the state debt recovery also a copy to council, a copy to my local member and a copy to the premier. I have also supplied a letter from the neighbours about the fence and the owner of this house. Copies of all letters I received in the mail from council about the Seizure of the dogs (funny I received that in the mail dated 24 Feb 10) and copy of the letter with the fines I received this week.

Try losing a dog, then tell me who benefits from microchipping. There have been owners here who've had stolen dogs returned after being missing for years and that's been due to a microchip. Yes, the fines are revenue raisers. They are a disincentive to those who let their dogs roam and a way of recovering money to support pounds and rangers. No different to speeding fines in principle. Microchips are only in a dog for the honest people, dogs are found and the little boy says, daddy can we keep it, and that is how dogs do not go back to their owners. So $100 each impounding fee and $50 feeding per day isn't enough in revenue? I pay rates on 4 properties and 2 blocks of vacant land (i still pay garbage on these blocks and water), like a lot of other people on these forums, its like a double hit. The fines were created on 24 Feb, the same day the dogs were impounded. How come the council didn't inform me when I picked up the dogs that I would be receiving more fines. Ashanali - if you bothered reading all he thread, instead of just the first post, you would have realised that both dogs are and were at the time of impounding registered. Poodlefan - as you said the same as speeding fines, get done once, tap dance and get off with a warning, second offence get a fine..... At no time during my owner ship of any dog have I ever received any information in the mail to say, if your dogs get out you will get a fine of $220 plus you will have to pay impound fees, No because no one knows about it. How about a notice given to all owners when the dogs are microchipped and you receive the print from council. Impound fees I can understand, this is how my local pound operates, but another fine? Please - I will be having an appointment with the legal officer about this tomorrow and trust me I will not be paying the $220 fines as I was not aware at the time of the offence that it was an offence. Like doing a U turn at a intersection, if there is no sign, its legal.... The $165 fines will get thrown out as I have all the supporting paperwork to prove the dogs were registered. I'm just waiting on my second lot of fines to come in the mail, the ones I were expecting for not having a collar and ID tag with the dogs name and my phone number, this in my area is compulsary the pound said, and it is a fine. I will also fight these fines, because a dog in the back yard that chases birds and jumps into the trees with a collar on is dangerous and may hang itself.

I'm sure they'd appreciate being left at the pound for 14 days just to save you money Hopefully that was a joke. It was a joke, but you can see why we have so many dogs in our pounds being killed day because of these fines. The fines arrive after the dogs are released, the owners pay the impound fees at the time of collection, so that arguement doesn't wash with me. That's why I was frantic all night looking everywhere for them, ringing the vets in the area and trying to get the after hours number for the ranger. Doing up lost posters and taking the day off work to search for them. Its all in my lost thread. Funny thing was, in the 3 page letter that the council sent with these fines, the dogs were dropped off at my vet, and I rang the vet 3 times that night and they said they hadn't been handed in to them, and the next day I also rang at 730am, but the ranger had picked the dogs up from them.

It would have been cheaper for me to leave them there for 14 days then get a friend to buy them. Then the council would not had received my upto date details and therefore could not fine me from another state.
-
Shouldn't the pound have informed me about these fines at the time of collection of the animals? I have all the paperwork from registration of both dogs and it shows on the receipts of each dog from Sutherland Shire Council.
-
Both dogs were registered. I just failed to update my details when i moved house with my boy, lucky I only got a warning, the fine is $165. In the envelope there was a 'Chip In' paperwork, the fines are NSW wide. But what I have been hit with the Fines for "unregistered" doesn't add up, there is nothing to say dog registered in public place. How do you fight with the state debt recovery?
-
As some of you are aware, my two dogs went on a walkie by themselves a few weeks ago, they were picked up by the ranger and put into the pound. It cost me $334 to get them out even though they were both registered and chipped. Today in the mail I received 4 fines and 2 warnings: 1. Owner have unregistered comanion animal in public place not dangerous dog $165 2. Owner have unregistered comanion animal in public place not dangerous dog $165 3. Own Dog uncontrolled in public place not dangerous dog $220 4. Own Dog uncontrolled in public place not dangerous dog $220 5. Not notify change in contact details (my fault) 6. Not notify change in contact details (breeder never placed my details on the pink change of owner form. So all up to get my dogs out of the pound and pay these fines $1104 Now I know why there are so many dogs dying in our pounds, how do they get off charging this type of money?? I can not argue with the council about it, the last sentence on the 3 page letter says: "Should you wish to contest the penalty notices attached, all adjudication and representation of dispute of penalty notices MUST be made in writing to:- STATE DEBT RECOVERY OFFICE, PO Box 786, STRAWBERRY HILLS, NSW 2021 I have 21 days to pay the fines. What would you guys do?

I have heard of plenty of dogs being sprung from the pound pregnant, and taken to be desexed and they were full term and the carers not knowing they were full term. No affect on the bitch in any way.
-
I'm with Ellz on this one... Why wasn't she desexed? Another reason why rescue groups don't like breeders as they allow dogs to go to homes like this breed cross pups and the pups will grow into dogs and end up in pounds because they are no longer cute. Sorry breeders - but you ethical ones know exactly what I am saying here and this is why you have contracts, limited register and encourage desexing. Other's don't care as long as they get the quick cash in their pockets.

I'm after a copy of the front page of the Feb 2010 Dogs News Australia about the "Keeping the peace with the FCI". I wanted to read more on the "There are 5 breeds now being exhibited in Australia that come under FCI breed standards which require a Schutzhund title before they can achieve full FCI Championship status." And how it is going to effect the breeders now in Australia who are only showing their dogs and not competing in Schutzhund. Thanks

Here is a link to what is going on here in my yard. http://www.darwinvets.com/topical/harvestmites.htm I have a spray bottle with permoxin in it, he gets sprayed once a day, plus has been treated with Advantix. It isn't helping. I don't want to have to keep treating him, and putting Chemicals all over him, when it doesn't seem to be working.
-
Permoxin kills it, but is bloody expensive. For me to do the entire yard it will cost over $300. But then once the wind picks up, they can still blow in from the school next door.
-
The vet was treating him to a grass allergy for the past few months. We have been away for 3 weeks in QLD and he has been in the same types of grass. The vet said it was grass mites, I even questioned the vet over lice from bats, and the wide life around and he said this is grass mites. I myself googled it, they need a host like fleas, when a dog gets fleas they jump off bite you and jump back on. Same with the mites, they jump on the dog, bite the dog and then jump back into the grass. Its all over his snout, under arms, tummy sides and chest. Around his mouth is probably the worst, where it is normally black, its like the black has worn off making it pink.
-
Whats the best thing to kill them in the grass, they are sending my dog crazy with all the itching.
-
valleywa - I would have looked a lilly and thought she had kelpie in her, but I was definately wrong. Ruthless has had the test done on one of her dogs, it came back 50% stafford and 50% unknown. There is a thread somewhere about it.
-
Yep and even this is happening in the NSW pounds with adults. The staff think because it is a nice temp dog it needs to be saved and then chipped as a SBT cross or a ASBT cross. This then give the SBT and ASBT bad names when a incident occurs. I also see a lot of people in Sydney walking their PBs with no DD collar on, there is no way the identifier can get the breed wrong. Are the people that are chipping these animals collecting a bit of money under the table?
-
What did your breeder tell you?
-
We have some of those too, rolled up for the dogs to chew on.

What a terrible thing to happen. You know she is probably having a fantastic time up there over the and looking down saying she had a wonderful time doing what she loved doing best.
