Are There Laws Against Breeding Every Heat Cycle?
nickojoy replied to Luvmy4's topic in General Dog Discussion
If they are a BYB, you can not do anything, other than report to the RSPCA if you believe the animals are not being looked after, also inform them that they are selling/giving away their pups at 4 weeks of age and some are already dead. The RSPCA should step in. -
Why Are Some Pups Sold Without Papers Altogether
nickojoy replied to GardenofEden's topic in General Dog Discussion
Why didn't the breeder just do a Non-Breeding Agreement and give the MR papers? This wouldn't have cost any extra and sent the forms to the QLD CCC. -

Are you positive? If you only saw photocopies of their registration certificates, you won't know what colour they are (unless they were coloured copies). Limited Registration and Main Registration certificates are printed on different coloured paper with different coloured ink. I have the address of the breeder. I did check with Dogs Queensland before purchasing the pup. The breeder is indeed legitimate. I specifically asked Dogs QLD to compare notes with the photocopies that I had and it is true that the photocopies I have are exactly like the originals and the originals are definitely not of limited registration. Thanks. The breeder still would have had to register the pup with dogs QLD and the breeder may be retaining the papers to use on a dodgy dog to breed from? Maybe having a couple of back to back litters with a bitch but using the pups papers! It has happened before I hope that isn't the case -
Why Are Some Pups Sold Without Papers Altogether

Even with limited (as opposed to full) registration, you should still get papers. There's a difference between paying a premium for a show quality dog and not getting any papers at all. Don't know about the other states, but in NSW it is only $26 for main and $19.85 for limited registration. Why are the breeders charging that amount of money? -
I had a ACD pup at 6 weeks old, rescued from fairford road. We didn't realise he was deaf until 16 weeks as he was running with the pack, he got his collar caught one day and I was calling him and i didn't get a response. He did bark alot though for no reason. He was rehomed to a lady who had a 4 year old trained dog that he then followed. So training him was easier.

Is An American Staffordshire Terrier A Pitbull?

I voted NO. -
Large amounts of garlic cause the same problems as onions. Garlic contains only a small amount of the problematic substance that is in onions. Just as with people, moderation is the key.

Apple seeds, cherry pits, peach pits, pear pips, plums pits, and apricot pits contain cyanide, which is poisonous. While a few apple seeds may not cause a problem, the effects can accumulate over time if they are given to dogs regularly. Dogs should not be allowed to chew on a peach pit, cherry pit, apricot pit, or plum pit. Chewing can allow ingestion of cyanide. Chewing could also result in the pit being swallowed, causing continuous exposure to cyanide, or could cause the dog to choke.

Grape and Raisin Poisonings in Dogs Recently, there was a letter in the AVMA Journal from Dr. Gwaltney-Brant and others at the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center discussing grape and raisin poisoning in dogs. Apparently, grapes and raisins can be toxic to dogs when ingested in large quantities. The grapes and raisins came from varied sources, including being eaten off the vine directly. The dogs exhibited gastrointestinal signs including vomiting and diarrhea and then signs of kidney failure with an onset of severe kidney signs starting about 24 hours after ingestion of the grapes or raisins. The amount of grapes eaten varied between 9oz. and 2 lbs., which worked out to be between 0.41 and 1.1 oz/kg of body weight. Two dogs died directly from the toxicity, three were euthanized due to poor response to treatment and five dogs lived. Due to the severity of the signs and the potential for death, the veterinarians at the poison control center advocate aggressive treatment for any dogs suggested of ingesting excessive amounts of grapes or raisins, including inducing vomiting, stomach lavage (stomach pumping) and administration of activated charcoal, followed by intravenous fluid therapy for at least 48 hours or as indicated based on the results of blood tests for kidney damage. I have fed my dogs a few grapes every now and then for years, so I don't think there is a need to panic if a dog eats three or four grapes but if the whole bunch is missing from the table one day, it would be good to think about watching for any signs of a toxic reaction. Michael Richards, DVM 6/5/2001 Michal Update: You may wish to give your veterinarian a call if you suspect your dog has ingested grapes but aren't sure. It's a good idea to know where he is going to be if you might have an emergency later, in case you need to make other arrangements . You both may decide to assume that the dog has eaten the grapes and treat the dog. Whatever the decision, letting your vet know that there is a potential problem going on is a good idea. Newer information from Animal Poison Control has indicated that as few as 7 grapes can be toxic. 02/21/2007

Breeders' Conditions When Selling A Puppy
nickojoy replied to Zug Zug's topic in General Dog Discussion
Reclaiming a dog? Hell no! What? one rears the pup and then the breeder feels it is within her or his rights to claim it back? over my dead body You are bloody right in saying that a dog on limited reg is in no way inferior; I have also seen some show quality pets that are much loved as simply four legged members of the family. A few months ago the owner had posted on here that the bitch wasn't right (wasn't at the standard to breed from) and booked it in for desexing and had a new home lined up for her, the breeder was reading the replies here on DOL and rang the owner and said that was not to happen. The bitch wasn't allowed to be desexed as per the agreement, the agreement was written on their website under the pups details. The contract between the new owner and the breeder wasn't clear enough, (verbal) bitch had to go back to the breeder for a single mating, now bitch is pregnant, breeder and owner go halves in litter and bitch becomes fully owned by owner. The new owner had no choice in what Sired the litter either, he was DNA tested after the mating, I just hope he is clear! So producing low quality pups. I am unsure if the breeder has any restrictions on the registration of the litter if it is main or limited. HOPE NOT, hope they all are allowed to be limited registered or are allowed to be desexed prior to rehoming! Both the bitches from this litter it is happening to, the 2nd bitch hasn't yet come into season. -

Breeders' Conditions When Selling A Puppy
nickojoy replied to Zug Zug's topic in General Dog Discussion
I looked at a pup a couple of months ago, the conditions were the pup remained in the breeders name until I proved that the pup was shown at least 10 times. After I had supplied the paperwork of the shows, the pup's paperwork would be sent to myself. I had to live in the same state as the breeder. This is only if I wanted the pup on main register to show. There was no limits on the limited register (well only the normal, sold as pet only). If the Sire was used only as a stud and not owned by the breeder, then both Sire and Dam owners have to sign to upgrade/downgrade on the register? Or only the breeder? -
yeah there was some yelling in my house when that happened. Poor dog.

And all the Sydney pounds as there is hundreds of Staffords in pounds and rescue around Australia. They die everyday in our pounds. Have a look at the SBT puppy listing, there is 90 plus listings on there, and only a couple of quality pups out of those litters. It may take you 12 months before you find that quality SBT pup. Then show ring training a couple of times a week, then weekends at shows. Finding a mentor that will help you through the confirmation stage and assist with your breeding program. Do you have the room in your back yard to be able to seperate dogs? Do you have the room to keep pups incase you are unable to rehome them? Do you have the funds to help the pup out incase you have a medical emergency? It isn't cheap and if you have a bitch that may need a C section and no pups survive, on a Sunday morning at 1am, have you got the spare $5k laying around to pay for that? Can you get the time off work to look after the pups or whilst the bitch is whelping? Breeding isn't cheap, and you can see why rescue groups run at a loss and need donations when they spring bitches in pup from the pound. Breeders don't get any financial help from anyone.

That is exactly what was happening. The pup was enjoying the feel of the soft rug, it was soothing, and when anyone went near him, he didn't want to stop, which caused his behavouir. The pup was still wormy yesterday you could see it in the poo. The new owners had never had a pup so didn't know the symptoms. Some cream on the bum, a good can of puppy pal and a good quality worming tablet will flush the worms out.

That is simple. That is true. Are you serious? I have been searching for a pup, no need to mention the breed here. Prices rang from $800-$3500 this depends on the breeder, quality, colour and lines. Ethical breeders are not in it for the money, they will take a loss and its even worse if the bitch has to have a C section and only one pup survives. No profit there is there. A Ethical breeder with all relevant tests to sire and dam may sell a better quality pup for $1000 than a breeder in it for the money for $2500 with only grandparents tested. This is the same as stud fees. When I rang about a pup last week, the lady started taking to me about stud fees, she said she charges $400 for her untitled dog for stud, I have seen less quality advertised for $2500 and people are paying this!!!! I have also noticed on certian sites that they will advise litters with $1000 difference in price with pups because the colours are apparently worth more! The original question answered, it comes down to the ethics of the breeder not wanting to place a 'add to cart button' on their website!

I'm going to visit the pup this morning without the breeder. I don't want anyone stressing out and I don't want a yelling match between anyone. I am taking the video camera with me and will post up later maybe it is different to what I am being told. I did confirm that it was Advantage and not Advocate. The pup was given a injection yesterday at the vet to make sure it didn't have worms. I suggested to stop the current diet, which is exactly what the breeder was feeding and try puppy food. I said last night if the pup was infested with worms that to give him a can of puppy food to flush the system and to start on some quality dry food. The pup apparently did have fleas and this is why they treated it with advantage. They spoke to the vet last night and he said that there is no way that the pup is allergic to the treatment for fleas or worms. The vet refered them to Karen Hedburg for further advise. I'm not sure if I mentioned it in previous posts, but when the pup is rubbing his bum on the ground and biting the carpert at the same time, if anyone goes near him he attacks them. Spoke to a behavourist last night about this, they said maybe a anal gland infection and the pup is in pain so when you approach it is affraid and attacks. Just spoke to the owners, there is no change in his behaviour this morning.

I'm meeting the breeder at the owners house in the morning so we can see what is going on with the pup and I can play the middle girl...I spoke with the breeder today and she was in tears having no idea what was going on and very confused.

Update on the story The pup was last wormed by the breeder and the owner saw this happy last Wednesay when she picked up the pup. The pup also had fleas which then she placed Advocate on the pup to kill them, apparently the fleas were jumping all over the new owners daughter. The behaviour started Saturday when she rushed the pup to a emergency vet south west Sydney. Xray's were conducted thinking the pup had a blockage but nothing seen, the second vet then took bloods and did a ultrasound, nothing showed on the ultrasound and still waiting on the bloods, unsure what they are testing with the bloods.

I spoke to the breeder today, the breeder had 8 pups from this litter and 2 are still in care at the breeders waiting to be picked up. No symptoms are being displayed on these 2 pups and no other complaints from other new owners. I personally seen the pups at 4 weeks old, and maybe they were not getting the attention they required, but i am unable to fully comment on this. The pup is being kept inside as the new owner is afraid it may catch something from their yard, not 100% sure if something has gone wrong in the yard before or they are just being paranoid. The pup was wormed prior to going to the new owner, the new owner spoke with me today and said that they had wormed it twice, I had the heart worming question written down but forgot to ask as they were in panic and very upset. pup is being fed mince, rice, pasta and cooked veggies (unsure what veggies). I was very shocked to hear that the vet said it was very common in staffords and they display symptoms at 6 weeks, where everything I was reading today about it said from 6 months. Pup was only wormed (supplied by the vet) and given C3 at breeders, wasn't bathed or heart worm treated. But what if mum was treated for heartworm whilst pregnant, could this effect the pup? Like via vaccination? There was a party on the weekend at the new owners house - maybe the noise or something??? Maybe some young kid gave it something it wasn't to have, like a drug or alcohol, that is all I can think of.
-
Cool thanks, will double check exactly what was given to the pup in regards to worming tablets or heart worming. Also - the 3rd vet didn't look at the pup he made the diagnosis over the phone!!!!! and also said even though the parents are cleared the pup can still get it!!!! This is a well known Sydney vet mind you.

A friend purchased a pup a week ago, the pup is now 9 weeks old. The new owners are apparently having health issues with it. They have said they have taken it now to 3 different vets and the last vet said it had L2HGA, which I believe is impossible seeing both sire and dam are clear. The pup is rubbing its bum on the ground (I'm thinking worms, but it has been wormed) and biting itself and biting the carpet. Apparently when someone touches this pup it bits them as if it is in pain and yelps. It is also rubbing its belly on the ground, and gets the shakes (maybe nerves). The vets have done xrays, ultrasounds and blood tests and nothing. The pup is now 9 weeks of age, the new owners have had it for 6 days and the pup has had this behaviour the last 3 days. The new owners have only kept this pup inside. His diet is BARF with no dry food at all. Any ideas?
