  1. So what are the results if you breed a clear and a carrier? 50% clear?
  2. Does that mean breeders keep the pups for an extra 2 weeks after vaccination and the pups are not rehomed until they are 10 weeks old? Ace got his 3rd vac and his neck swelled up and he got KC. Was flat for a few days after the vaccination. Star got her 1st at 6 weeks, 2nd at 10 weeks now the vet said I have to wait until she is at least 16 weeks before her 3rd vac to ensure her previous 2 kick in.... But the vet was happy to give her a heart worm at 12 weeks. Keep fluids up on your pup, even if you have to put some sweetness in like a small amount of red cordial in the water to ensure the pups drinks. Maybe a bland diet like some rice and some cooked chicken breast mixed together. Nothing too strong for the pups belly.
  3. Would what you do if you got a pup and you had its tests done and they were either affected or a carrier of Genetic Diseases? Of course you would change it to limited register, and get it desexed at the earliest age. Would you then try and rehome it, keep it or send it back to the breeder and hope they will give you some of your money back?
  4. I would like to know the difference in the colours: Red, Fawn, and Blue Fawn and Ive also heard Tan mentioned. Thanks
  5. I am interested in answers for this. There seems to be some controversy about certain colours in the breed and paying more for 'rare' colours. From what I have seen the blues don't seem to look as true to type as other colours. Is this the general consensus, or just my own personal taste of what a Stafford should look like? Just bumping Highly undesirable colours as noted in the breed standard are black and tan and liver. Staffords, like all dogs with the tan pattern gene as well as the brindle gene also come in "black and brindle" where the tan on the legs is turned to brindle. Technically under the standard this is NOT an undesirable colour, but in reality most breed specialists will class it as black and tan and treat is according to it's merits. Liver is the colour described as Chocolate in Labradors - brown coat & brown pigment (lips, eye rims etc). Brindles can also be liver with brown stripes instead of black and brown pigment instead of black. The standard also requires the dog to have a black nose, so liver brindles fail on this count, but in reality unless it's in bright sunlight a lot of people won't see a liver brindle for what it is. Blue. Tiptoes carefully. Blue is permitted in the colour clause but knocked out of the standard by the clause requiring the dog to have a black nose - which is a genetic impossibility for a blue. That said, a quality blue WILL win in the ring under a judge who understands the reality of the situation. Mostly they will be dark blues - Weimaraner grey is very common but fails on eye colour and nose colour in most cases. Unfortunately most blues are bred for their colour and not their temperament/health/conformation and as any breeder knows this is a disaster for any breed - regardless of the breed and the trait concerned. I have seen three blues (in real life) which were of the highest quality, all were bred by "accident" and occurred in normal coloured litters. Apart from these I have not seen a blue in the flesh that I personally would consider to be a good example of a show Stafford, but the vast majority do appear to have good temperaments and as this is by far the most important feature of the breed all is not completely lost. Can I add to this that alot of the blue breeders are breeding for a hobby or the extra cash, its sad and they are not doing it for the right reasons. I currently have two blue pups here, both from different breeders, the oldest one is a fantatic little guy, we are going to show training at the moment you never know, we 'may' have a chance (depends on how many SBTs turn up at shows!)I have copies of both health testing and hip scores from the parents. My bitch is still coming to terms that I wont hurt her (3 months old). With my bitch, it shows they are not breeding with love and not giving the pups the attention they deserve from the day they are born. And I will add in here that I have no record of health testing of her. She will be health tested if if she doesn't clear I really don't know what I will do. I didn't buy two puppies to breed from, I bought my boy for show, and got my girl as a pet for my mum (cause she loved my boys colour). If by chance we go well in the show, then we may consider but at this time its not going to happen. A buyer looking for a SBT pup needs to do research if you want a buy a blue. You need to see the lines, you need to meet the parents, you need to see proof of the health testing and get copies of both parents test papers, NOT ALL BREEDERS HEALTH TEST, and please don't assume. If it doesn't say anything about health testing in their advert or on their website, it doesn't ask to hurt. Breeders in this thread will say "Never touch a breeder that doesn't health test". I learnt the hard way and I hope no one else follows in my foot steps.
  6. It is purely just for showing and does not affected the dogs health in any way. The standard states that a Stafford must have a black nose and a liver colour will only have dudly nose (light nose), same with blues (will only have grey nose). It was believed in the early years that if black and tan was allowed that it would end up overpowering over all other colours and you would only have black and tans. All colours should be the same price but you will find some breeders like to profit on certain colours stating that they are rare. Leanne As Leanne was saying with the rare colours, some breeders say rare colours, they are talking about Blue, Blue brindle (actual colour is Brindle), blue and white Pied, and blue fawn. The prices usually start at $2000 and now are fetching up to $3000 a pup from a registered breeder. The colour isn't rare as there is usually around 20 litters listed in the puppy listings at a time.
  7. Haha, whats the fine for that? I take my staffords to the kids park to play, they climb the stairs and slide down the slippery dip (im not kidding either). And plus, the service dogs recruits are taken to childrens parks all the time so they can get used to the shapes and build their confidence up on the equipment without hurting themselves so if a bad man is hiding there, the dogs are not spooked. Are the rangers going to fine the services too? And these dogs are trained for protection, the most dangerous dogs in Aust... not the PBT
  8. I got my boys 2nd done at 10 weeks and then 10 days later he was out at a show, not showing but walking around. He was a couple of days under 12 weeks. Each person is different though. Some people wont let their dogs feet touch the ground until they have had all 3, and others take their little babies to shows at 6 weeks.
  9. People say yes she is a puppy, but if you baby her now, she will always do it for the rest of her life. Trust me my boys is 2.5 years and if he is left alone the neighbours will hear him scream. Our newest dog is 16 weeks and is crate trained and he doesn't care about being left alone even if I take all the dogs away, he would still play alone or sunbake. But our newest bitch is 12 weeks and she screams like crazy.... So i am crate training her whilst I am home with a the crate totally covered so she feels safe like a den with no toys and she is starting to come around. I let her out about 20mins after she shuts up.
  10. Yes, there is a clause in Australian laws of responsible ownership There is another one about training a dog to do as well, but Its too late for me to find that reference. I know there is a battle currently happening in Vic about this, but they are fighting the laws. Remember Shutzhund is a dog sport that is trained purely on equipement based and not to attack any other part of the body other than the arm. What state are you in, I might be able to point you in the right direction with the sport. Also, not all dogs are allowed to compete, there is only a selected few. The rules are the same as showing too, dog must be pedigree and an entire.
  11. Should be more like what sort of things does a puppy need to be exposed to, to ensure they are the best! We take ours to the kids park and let them climb over the childrens play equipment, they are different sizes and shapes. This is on lead and with no kids there. And of course the Mirrors, so they don't go silly when they see themselves. The toilet flushing is another one. Nails being clipped or filed.
  12. ive never had a problem, and either has anyone else i know, so each to there own. I have personally seen what a mess a dog can do with a bean bag, well 2 actually... No harm to the dogs as they were adults and not pups. I'm sure your vac wont be impressed either when you are trying to clean the mess up 12 months later!!!! And once a pup pisses on it, its useless unless you want to empty into bath, wash and then dry and place back into the bag! I have a dog bed I bought that is fully washable from Pet barn 2 years ago, and it hasn't been torn, ripped or chewed by any of my current dog or the 100 foster dogs that I had at the time. The latest blanket I bought was a fluffy one from the kids section in Kmart, about $10 fully washable and my boy loves it. Hasn't chewed it up yet, but ripped the crap out of the towel in the outside kennel where they sleep during the day! Try also DealsDirect, they have some crates that you can keep your pup in at night for the rest of its life.
  13. Thought I would let you know that ARMY took out the Man work (protection) and Obedience and Agilty at the NSW Service Dog Trials on Friday. Uri competed last yeah in the comp as a recruit dog, with no training, now 12 months later (trained by the OH) he is the best in NSW. Uri is a 2 year old Malinois and was breed by Schwarchund Malinois in Victoria. The photo of Uri was take 12 months ago. Well done Army for being the best in NSW against the NSW Police, and Corrections.
  14. Monday I will, when I go back to work.

    Crate

All 3 of our dogs are crate trained and the 3 of them sleep in the 48 inch all together all night long. I was just reading an article about crate training and i was wondering what peoples thoughts are on too long in the crate. Overnight they are asleep all night but what about during the day whilst at work? Our dogs are aged 12 weeks, 22 weeks and 2 years.
  16. Might have to run 5kms a day for the next year to be a size 8 again... its been 10 years since I was in that size....
  17. Its amazing stuff with Daddy, seeing that Daddy was owned by the rapper, did the right thing and seeked advise from him and has ever since been a great ambassador to the breed. Seeing he is now 14 I will cry the day he goes over the rainbow bridge. At the end of the day, he still is a normal dog, digs holes, steals shoes...
  18. Do you think there will be one in Bathurst this weekend?
  19. Yes he is main registered and I have his certificate. Thanks PPS, i have both Sire and Dams details on the GTG certificates
  20. Thanks Stitch, I have their contact details on the parents certificate I will contact them and hopefully they can send the kits to me within the next 3 weeks when my little man is due for his 3rd vac. Is there a small percentage that my pup could NOT be clear?? Even though the both parents are clear?
  21. Skip, the army didn't have a display there, it may have been the airforce, and plus the defence force doesn't train in Schutzhund, its the total opposite, Schutzhund is more a equipment related sport, where the defence force trains the dogs to directly attack. The Army dogs and the Airforce dogs are trained in different ways, different school and instructors. The army recruits their dogs from respectable breeders and the Airforce has a breeding program where only a small percentage of dogs pass.
  22. Yeah I have the copies of the certificates for the pups parents and all 4 certificates state CLEAR. I thought I could get it done with his final vac, then it will save some money on consultation fees.
  23. Awesome thank you. And any vet should be able to conduct this test yes??
  24. Canine DNA Disease, like L2HA and HC.
  25. Hi Guys, Just wondering what age the vets can do a DNA test? Thanks
