Thanks for that... I should have stated it was more of a hypathetical question. I know Simba won't be re-producing. I asked the question in my bid to simply 'learn' about genetics.

Thanks so much for your concern and support BadBoyz – I have heard so many great things about you! May I ask, what is your real name? Just so I know who I’m talking to.. Ok so you’re saying it’s ok to get another male Pei after I’ve desexed Simba? Something on my consideration list (IF I choose to Breed one day) And it’s 8 months I have to wait you say? My Vet told me from 6 Months, and Pandii in the forum told me 8 weeks!!! Can I ask you, do ALL Pei’s carry the Entropian Gene?? For example, if I were to buy a good quality male and do things by the book, have him registered etc, am I guaranteed his litters won’t have the same eye condition provided ‘mum’ is of same quality?? Someone once told me that despite the parents been A1 quality, you always run the risk.. because this condition is something that’s hereditary within the breed itself – not sure as to how true this is. Thank you so much for your time, you’re very inspiring and I look forward to chatting with you on a regular basis! I am constantly in the ‘Shar Pei Thread’ Also, in relation to the passing of the eye condition - does it mean that if Simba re-produces he will be guranteed to have a litter with the same problem?

Even still... it's so immature isn't it?? Typical macho behaviour...

It’s certainly not your place to judge my fiancé Pandii. He isn’t the one here seeking guidance – I am. We have gone off topic here anyway. I am trying my damn best to do what’s right here, but feel like i’m getting kicked while i’m down. I am considering joining another forum because I don’t feel I’m getting anything other than criticism here. Thanks to those of you kind enough to offer me some guidance in relation to his Entropian. To those of you more worried about my Pei re-producing, I won’t be using him for breeding for the millionth time...

I agree, in fact i recommended they take all their sharpei (particularly their remaining pups) to my vet, which they informed me that they did today! And the other 2 pups are also booked in for eye tacking at the same time as my Simba which is great news. They will be paying for the three of them to get done. Oh that's sad.. I am more attached to animals, in particular dogs, than I am to children!! Some people think im strange.. I would have loved to have become a Vet or help in some way with animals.. Tell me more about what you do.. do people hand over their unwanted pets or do you find them on the streets..?? Pei come from everywhere They are given to me by people who do not want them anymore, but mainly they come from being left in pounds where their owners do not go to get them and they will be put to sleep I do not take all there are too many, just some I actually have a 1 year old Chocolate male at the moment in foster care, left in the pound to die Oh how beautiful... haven't considered getting another boy Pei... really wanted a girl but like I said earlier I don't know that I can now since my fiance doesn't want him desexed.. And it would be such a shame if i desexed the girl if i bought her from a pedigree breeder.. your thoughts? How do boy Pei's get along? Do you have any pics of him?

Yes but you see Pandii, it's not entirely my decision alone.. The dog also belongs to my fiance, more so to him in fact because I was planning on buying a girl. But now, I don't know what to do because I don't want to use him for breeding. Probably stick to just having Simba...

Sorry yes these people might be concerned by the damage they have already done. But if they were really good people they would have desexed their own two dogs and not BYB. I do hope thye are in the process of desexing their dogs right now so that they do not bring any more pups into this world with these genetic conditions. Peibe Baby I do hope that you desex your puppy when he is old enough and don't breed with him. If you do choose to breed in the future I hope you join your states Canine Council, become a registered breeder, purchase registered dogs that are fine examples of their breed, put the time and effort into showing them, research their genetic history and breed lines and thne only breed to better the Shar Pei breed. It's sad that you probably thought you were saving a few dollars by buying a pup from a BYB rather then a registered breeder and now in the long run it has cost you a whole lot more. I'm glad your pup is getting the medical attention he needs. Thanks Puggy, Reason we bought Simba was because after 2 months of trying to buy a chocolate male and there either being none available from reputable breeders or having been all sold we decided we'd settle for another colour, just happened to find Simba and we couldn't say no.. I wanted to be the one to help him with his 'condition'... Althought I would have loved to have bought a A1 pup for future breeding, it isn't an option with Simba due to his condition. This is a shame but one has to do what one has to do... I'll be posting pics up in a few minutes!

Agreed. This pup needs to go straight back for the "breeders" to manage, and you should be given a full refund. Perhaps, everyone has their own judgement I guess. I'm not willing to return Simba, it isn't an option for us. If we wanted to, we know we could, alternatively the young couple have offered to pay for his tacking and Entropion Surgery.

Hi Miranda, They aren't a breeder, they have two shar pei's that had a litter and sold them. They are really genuine people, in fact, they emailed me offering to pay for all his costs (which i refused, we will go halves instead). What would one do with the pups otherwise?? Id like to breed them one day... so what would I do with them? Not sell them? I would understand they need tacking and do it prior to selling, but if they're going to need extra TLC later on that's the new owners' responsability, right? Passing him on to anyone else is not an option. PB if you want to breed Sharpei as a longer term objective, I can't recommend more highly that you join your breed club, purchase registered dogs, exhibit them and learn as much as you can from an experienced mentor before you take that step. I'm sure there'd be folk here who'd help steer you in that direction. No doubt you've already learned that there's more to breeding healthy examples of a breed than owning a male and a female and mating them. Personally, I'd suggest breeding to decrease the likelihood of the issues your pup has experienced would be a worthy objective to consider. That would mean not breeding from your current pup. Absolutely, I definintely won't be jumping in to that anytime soon! I would like to commit myself to the Breed and learn as much as I can before I even think of buying. Thank you for your recommendation, much appreciated!

Great news, thanks Rescue! They just emailed me and will be calling me tonight. They've offered to help pay for his costs which is much appreciated.

I absolutely agree SharpeiRescue... Which is why I am oh so frustrated about getting something done. Like I mentioned in an earlier post just now, he is booked in for his first eye tacking on Monday by a fantastic Vet. We saw her last night and she is brilliant.. very happy with her so far. Hopefully this will at least help him see although underneath those lids he also has the 2nd lids up as defence, but she didn't seem too concerned about that. We still can't see his eyes, she mentioned she saw a lot of redness and irritation, and suspects the eyeballs are far back, like the 2nd lids having come out - she thinks this may be a defence thing. First things first though.... Hopefully all goes well, I was so worried i didn't get a chance to ask her how much this would cost us.. !?

Thanks Settrlvr, The young couple that sold me the pup didn't seem like the type of people that would purposely cause harm, and i'm a pretty good judge of character. I actually got a phone message call from the guy yesterday, they're obviously concerned and aren't palming me off. But they were obviously told one thing by their vet, and last night after having visited our NEW vet (who is fantastic) she's going to do the (1st) tacking on Monday, so I cannot wait and I hope it all goes well... He'll probably look a bit strange judging by what she showed me she's going to do... Apparently he also has his 'second' lids out - sorry i don't know the technical term for this one.. But she says this may be a deffence mechanism as it protects the eye more with his condition, she didn't seem too concerned about it. My boy has way too many rolls on his face and stitching it up a bit'' isn't going to help because the rolls come from behind the forehead, so with the weight, the lot may just fall forward, so she plans on tacking right back or rather.. further up the forehead? Kind of hard to explain... I'm interested in everyone's thoughts on this... I haven't seen pics of a sharpei having had Tacking before so i'm not too sure what the norm is.

Thank you.. They're eyes generally open within the first 14 days at the most.. so similar to most dogs. Yes there is slight discharge, but only slightly.. it's to be expected i guess..

Even though it hasn't been pre-diagnosed as yet??

Hi guys, I have a very serious situation... My fiancé and I bought our little boy Sharpei 2 days ago and he still hasn’t opened his eyes. The seller assured us that her vet told her he should be ok and that he would ‘grow into them’. Upon having a closer look with my fiancé, after having brought him home, we became concerned because upon trying to pry his eyes open for his drops, there seemed to be a forever amount of ‘fat’ (rolls) and we couldn’t even see the eyeball – neither could the vet we then took him to last night. He also seemed to dislike the investigating his eyes part by the Vet. Poor little guy must be in pain.. Entropion Surgery is only available to Pups 8 months or older. My little Simba is barely 8 weeks old (next week). Tacking may be a solution but something tells me this is much more serious. I cannot see ‘tacking’ being a solution because of the amount of ‘eyelid’ there is from top AND bottom. Has anyone had Tacking or Entropion Surgery on their dog/s?? Please share your stories.. Can they recommend anyone in the Sydney South West area? (Liverpool) We are willing to travel if not exactly local, we just want the best we can find for our little guy. He continually bumps into things and is proving to be difficult when we’re at work, knowing he is home alone with no guidance. We worry constantly and it breaks my heart when he’s looking for me and I’ll be right beside him and he doesn’t know it.. The joy he feels when i speak to him and he realises im right there is overwhelming. I am seeing another Vet tonight, who will hopefully find a solution, she also recommended I take out Insurance for him because it can end up becoming quite costly. Problem is, i’ve researched 3 different organisations and they all have waiting periods of 20-30 days... This option wouldn’t benefit my current situation. Can anyone recommend a Pet Insurance with no waiting period? Thanks in advance..
