Bumping again as we need more numbers to convince the boss a road trip would be viable...

We will be charging $80 per dog plus $10 per ACES form. So if you have one adult dog, the charge will be $90. If you have a litter of 5 pups, the charge will be 5 x $80 plus $10 = $410 We are hoping to help pedigree dog breeders continue the hard work they have been putting in for many years to eradicate hereditary eye diseases.

Ask a veterinary ophthalmologist to perform retinoscopy on your dog to check for short sightedness. It is a short painless procedure that is done without sedation or anaesthetic and checks the focusing ability of the eyes.... 'cos dogs can't read the chart!! We find this is can be a cause in cases like yours. Often though, there is no visual impairment and it is a behavioural issue. All the Best, N.

Animal Eye Care will be doing a series of clinics in Regional Victoria, Southern NSW and Tasmania. We hope to assist people in getting ACES certification by providing a handy and more affordable service. We need to know where people need this service the most and a rough idea of numbers to make this viable. I asked a similar question on here late last year and got a good response for Wagga, and we plan to travel there very soon (exact date TBA, but it will be at Charles Sturt University). If you pick "Other", please let me know where. Thank you! N.

I got two purebreds at that price. One now even has a Ch. in front of his name. What were they?? Some breeds in some areas no one cares for.. I wouldn't pay crap for anything under my knee (hates small dogs) Do as you will,,take as you please,,,for as cheap as you can get it.... This isn't about that They are Deerhounds, so they would not be "under your knee", I'm sure. I didn't get them because they were cheap. I got them because I offered a good home to two lovely dogs.

I got two purebreds at that price. One now even has a Ch. in front of his name. And both are healthy, loving and loved family pets.

One of my dogs seems to only poo in front of Really Good Looking People, usually really hot tradie-types.

Hi Nicole Just wondering how Dallas was doing? Hope everything is OK.

Hi Nicole The brown pigment is not likely to be a melanoma. Dogs can get pigment changes on their sclera (the white bit) much like we get freckles. One of my own dogs has a large area of pigment on her sclera. In some breeds such as Cairn Terriers, excessive pigment can cause problems. Even if it IS a "nasty" spot, there are often thing we can do before resorting to eye removal. The itching and watering may be caused by an ectopic cillia (an eyelash that is growing backwards). These are VERY hard to see without a microscope, but can cause the problems you have described. See an eye specialist, and I am sure you will get some good news. All the best.

Common sense does not seem to be very common. If I'd had the conversation with the vet in the street, pub, park wherever, I would asked her WTF she was thinking condoning this clients actions. As she was asking me in a professional capacity, I had to tread carefully. When she seemed oblivious to the fact that there would probably be health consequences for the puppies, I thought a mention of the law may have swayed her.
-
I certainly don't expect vets to know everything, but I would hope that my vet would be up to date on current laws surround my pet. Particularly laws pertaining to something she appears to be condoning. Personally, I DO teach at University ( to all you Melb Uni Vet students). I take the prac classes for Ophthalmology. I spend the two precious hours I have with the students doing not only core things they must know about examining eyes, but I also talk about the importance of ensuring healthy breeding stock. I harp on about the benefits of buying a pure-bred dog from a registered ethical breeder who health tests where necessary. I usually spend some time talking about the "hybrid vigour" or lack thereof of DDs. I tell them about the legislation. I am quite sure I end up boring them to tears... I am sure they all remember me as the "crazy pedigree dog lady". I have spoken to the vets I work with, and we will put together an information sheet on the new legislation and how it can affect their clients and to a "mail out" to all clinics in Victoria. It is a shame that an individual clinic is left to do this, rather than the bodies involved in putting the legislation in place.

If you want to vet bash, or debate specialist fees, please feel free to start you own thread. Frankly, I'm bored of it.

Well there is your answer Elfin, Dont put vets all in one baskets saying 'we' are failing to educated these vets, or how can we educated, based on your one bad experience Ummm.. I didn't think I put any vets in any basket. I simply asked what we can do to help educate vets about current laws involving animals, as it it obvious from this and many other conversations I have had that many vets are unaware of these laws.
-
The main point I was trying to make was the vet had either had no knowledge of the new legislation, or thought the legislation only pertained to pure-bred dogs.
-
I did not intend for this to be a vet-bashing thread. And not all vets "suck". I happen to work with four vets that do not "suck", and all four vets also have the utmost respect for the hard work that responsible breeders do to ensure healthy dogs.

I just had a mind-blowing phone call from a qualified experienced vet. A client of hers has a bitch who's last two litters have has eye problems and she wants to breed from the bitch again. I strongly recommended the client get an Ophthalmologist to examine the bitch and discuss whether the bitch is suitable to breed with. I asked if the bitch had been screened for PRA or Hereditary Cataract (two diseases known to this breed). The vet's response was "Oh, no. She's just a home breeder, she doesn't need to do that". When I explained that there could possibly be serious legal consequences if she bred a dog with PRA or HC, the vet said "it's ok, they are not pure bred dogs, she mates the bitch to a xxxxx(another breed known to be affected with PRA and HC)". I explained that the new laws encompass ALL breeders and "breeds", but she dismissed the idea, again saying they are "just home bred dogs". Where is the system failing to educate these vets? What can be done to improve the education of vets, both qualified and students? (And WTF is a "home breeder"?!?!)

You. Are. Awesome. *goes to find nearest Artemis supplier*

It looks like I need to aim for between 30-40% protein. I don't think I am achieving this with the mostly raw diet (lamb flaps, lamb necks and chicken carcasses, and about 300g roo mince and a couple of tablespoons of pulped veggies/fruit) and a bit of Eagle Pack Holistic (which is only 23% from memory). I have had a look at a couple of high energy kibbles and they all seem to have corn in them, which gives one of my dogs baaaaad diahorrea.
-
Thank you, poodlefan! Looks like I should be increasing my dog's protein levels... Are there any DOLers with racing Greys? I would be very interested to know what they feed.
