  1. Thank you so much to the kind person that handed in my (brand new ) iPhone yesterday. Your honesty is much appreciated. Thanks again, Nathalie
  2. So sorry you are having such trouble with your Cav's dry eye. Dry eye (aka keratoconjunctivitis sicca, or KCS) is as someone already said, an auto-immune disease; the tear glands of the eye are essentially, attacking themselves. Both the cyclosporin and tacrolimus are immune suppressants, that are traditionally used in human organ transplant patients as an "anti-rejection" drug. The use of these drugs topically in an eye affected with KCS is very common. Both drugs slow down or stop the body attacking the tear production, hence the rise in tear reading (Schirmer Tear Test). What must also be remembered is that eyes can still be clinically "dry" even though the Tear Test is "normal", the test only measures the VOLUME of tears, not the QUALITY of the tears. An important component of the tears is a lipid (fat), which also moisturises the eye. If the lipid part of the tears is insufficient, the eyes will still appear dry. If your dog has concurrent conjuctivitis, this could affect (decrease) the lipid level in the tears. Panalog will help with conjunctivitis, as it contains a cortisone BUT (and it's a BIG BUT) if there are any ulcers on the cornea (quite possible in a "dry eye"), the Panalog will make the ulcers worse. Panalog alone will not help your dog's tear film. Very rarely, dogs have an adverse reaction to the CARRIER, or base that the cyclosporin or tacrolimus comes in. Perhaps you could ask you specialist about this, as both drugs are made up "in house". The other option is surgery - a Parotid Duct Transposition. Once upon a time, we would say that this works in 80% of cases. 10% still did not produce enough tears and 10% produces too many. Best wishes for your poor little dog; you are in good hands with the specialist... perhaps her meds will just take some "tweaking".

  7. Apparently the "final" is between Black's Beamer (Dachshund) and a Dalmation (not sure which). The "winner will be announced after dinner". Does anyone know who is judging?
  8. Just say, (purely hypothetically, of course), that a conformation showie was contemplating looking at maybe perhaps thinking about having a go at agility with her (or his) showdog (a sighthound with a working dog's brain and activity level), where would that person begin? The conformation-titled show dog is still shown regularly with success, but the show dog's brain wants to tackle more. The showie might have been told by several people that the dog might enjoy agility. The show dog has NO formal training (apart from run around in a circle, stack, hold stack for as long as requested). The show dog has exceptional recall for a sighthound (unless there is a rabbit involved), but that is it. No "heel", no "sit", etc . (Norty showie) Is there somewhere the showie could go to watch etc. and learn more before making a COMPLETE tool of herself (or himself) by involving said dog? :D

  11. I have a bitch called a male human name ("Ronnie" after Ronnie Woods of the Rolling Stones), and a dog called "Bernard" after Bernard Black (Dylan Moran's character in Black Books). Neither dogs cares what their name is, and their names suit them. I also know an ex-boyfriend got an ugly bitch pup shortly after we broke up. He named her after me. I got the last laugh because she grew up to be a stunning dog. EFS

  16. Oh wow I have 3 that walk past my house throughout the week (2 together and anther one who lives with someone else). I should definately have a chat to them about their dogs and meet them. They do look like pretty chilled out dogs. If you decide you want to know more about them, I know a LOVELY breeder in Murray Bridge.
  17. I rarely suggest Deerhounds to people because they are certainly not for everyone, but they tick all your boxes. They are easy to train because they want to please you, but would probably not excel at obedience. They love being inside with you. I lived for years in a 2 bedroom flat with three Deerhounds (two low-energy, one high energy) and they all did really well. They shed very little. They LOVE the beach and hiking, and have two speeds - flat out or fast asleep. They don't eat much and are generally very chilled-out dogs. They are also very compact - they fold up very small to fit into hatchback cars, etc. I have fostered several small fluffies and they are very good with them. http://www.dogzonline.com.au/breeds/profile.asp?dog=44834

  20. From memory, Advance Sensitive Skin contains corn, which causes my itchy dog to fall to bits. If you want to use Advance, I have found the Turkey and Rice to be better for skin. Otherwise I have been very happy with Artemis or Eagle Pack (Holistic Select) Anchovy variety.
